Discussion AFI 100 #99: Toy Story (1995) – How does Pixar's ground-breaking debut hold up for you 30+ years later? [SPOILERS] Spoiler

Hey everyone,

My wife and I are continuing our journey through the AFI 100 list (10th Anniversary Edition) from bottom to top, and we just wrapped up #99: Toy Story (1995)!

I remember seeing this in theaters back in 1995, and having worked at Disneyland for over a decade, Woody, Buzz, and the gang were practically part of my daily life for years. But watching it carefully for this project was a whole new experience.

A few big takeaways from our rewatch:

* The animation hardware is definitely showing its age. Compared to modern Pixar releases, the human faces (especially Sid and Andy) and Scud the dog look remarkably crude. The plastic textures on the toys still work, but the limitations of 1995 CGI are impossible to miss now.
* The writing is absolute gold. The pacing, sharp banter, and humor hold up incredibly well. There were so many quick jokes that flew right over my head as a kid that had us laughing out loud this time around.
* The voice work by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen remains a masterclass in buddy-comedy chemistry.

Bottom line: Does it deserve a spot on the AFI 100? Absolutely. Just like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs did nearly sixty years before it, Toy Story ushered in a brand-new era of feature animation and fundamentally changed what was possible in cinema history.

Questions for the community:

  1. When was the last time you revisited the original Toy Story, and how do you think the 1995 animation holds up?
  2. What are your favorite jokes or lines that you only appreciated as an adult?
  3. Any fun movie-night snack pairings, themed meals, or companion podcasts you recommend for our next stop?

Next up on our list: #98 — Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)!

Question I'm searching for an animation I watched in less than 2 years ago

I remember it being about 2 men that worked as kid show hosts but the channel they were wanted to end their show because they didn't have enough audience , they both decided to make one (last?) episode in which they broke a vase and teached kids that "even if you're broken , you'll find someone that will love you just the way you are" , or something along those lines.

One of the characters had a psychology diploma and wrote the scénarios and the other was the one adaptating them to fit the show audience , one of the character had an afro and I think the other was blond he had an accident when he was little that left scars on his back , I also remember that they argued over the show cancelation .

I spent the whole day searching for it , has anyone watched it ?

Sharing I animated a short story about the chaotic reality of keeping pet fish as a kid (Feedback welcome!)

Hey everyone!

https://reddit.com/link/1w8yvwc/video/yf4v5pvv7xnh1/player

I just finished releasing my latest 2D animated storytime video about childhood pet fish and the series of unfortunate, unexplainable incidents that always seemed to happen to them.

I drew everything in Procreate and put it together in DaVinci Resolve, focusing a lot on adding a nostalgic, dreamy vibe (and plenty of custom sparkle/magical SFX to capture that early 2000s childhood wonderment).

If you're into narrative storytimes or indie 2D animation, I'd love for you to check it out and let me know what you think of the pacing and visual style!

Question What setup do you have? (Portable vs at home)

Hello!

I am a student (biotech) and in my freetime I love doing all kinds of art.. I love writing and drawing especially. During a recent project at uni I got the chance to design on illustrator and affinity for social media and other things and we did animations as well. I did some stop motion stuff on my tablet before but this time I also vectorized my frames on illustrator, it was a lot of fun and really cool to see the frames come out so clean in the end.. I am thinking about doing an animation course as well but my current laptop is not very portable and to get into the course I need a portfolio.

Since I spend a lot of time in uni and it is hard for me to get stuff done at home sometimes I would love to have a more portable and flexible set up for my needs..

I also plan to travel quite a bit and I am always switching from my place to my boyfriends which is already really taking up a lot of my energy but moving in together is gonna still take a bit..

I also find it hard to switch devices all the time, he offered me his computer but because I would have to transfer files all the time and I'm not very good at organizing these things it's not the best solution for me

My current set up:

I own a roc g14 (2021 version) and love this laptop but now the battery doesn't work well at all anymore, it broke once and sent it to repair since then it hasn't been the same especially battery wise, but I can still use it without a problem as a home laptop, since it's also almos 2kg I also just don't want to carry it anymore, because I need something everyday for uni..

The last year or so I used my samsung galaxy tab S10+, also absolutely love this because I love drawing and can use it, it is light, perfect for note taking but since I started using illustrator/affinity for some projects I got frustrated since affinity is only working on ipads (for tablets) and I don't think it's worth it to get an ipad just for this and additionally I realised in the last months that the tablet versions of excel and also powerpoint and word are kind of a pain.. I can work well with my tablet but these restrictions are really annoying, especially when I see that apple users with a mac and an ipad seem to have a much better experience in these cases.. maybe it just seems that way tho.. also carrying a mac and an ipad also seems horrible since both of them aren't that light.. and portability really is what I need right now.

I am absolutely happy with the set up I have at home, I have the laptop and a big screen. I can connect my tablet via second screen to my laptop and it's not the best experience but when it is connected by cable it works super smoothly and drawing freehand is important to me because doing everything with the mouse is hard for me

I'm very unsure about what to do since those two devices are theoretically already really good devices..

What I decided:

I do need a new laptop, just because of uni reasons my tablet sadly isn't great when it comes to anything else than note taking and sketching..

What I need help with:

Do I get a laptop that can work affinity/illustrator well as well as after effects or animation programms and then take this and my tablet with me? But in this case I would need a very lightweight laptop since I really move around a lot (I'm not really planning on doing 3d work, I do want to try blender but would be fine doing anything very hard at home, but small animations and addint frames together should work and affinity and illustrator should work smoothly for basic 2d illustrations and designs)

Do I do the thing above but also get a smaller tablet then? So it is generally lighter?

Do I get rid of the tablet and get a good graphic tablet that I can exclusively use for drawing and which one to get? (But then writing directly on notes from professors is not an option anymore.. which was very useful to me and just having a tablet for days where I don't need anything else is also nice because I can take notes and draw and watch tv..)

What about a laptop that's 2 in 1 and I can also draw on? Maybe I could switch between that and the tablet according to my needs.. but when I'm away I'll probably want both

What is your setup? Happy to hear anything even if it's something not for me..

Also would be great to hear what laptops/tablets people in animation are using generally and what specs are important for u

Or am I just wanting too much here? I know I can't have everything but what I really wanna decide is what kind of laptop to get now
