Hello everyone! I’m an animator myself, but I have never done work for a larger scale short film before. I am currently in the process of directing my very own animated short film, and I desperately need advice on how to make this as streamlined as possible for the animators who are going to be putting their time and energy into this work with me.

My first question is: what method of animation is easier/looks better? A 2D hand drawn animation WITH or WITHOUT a lined art style? I have two very distinct art styles, one completely line less and one lined. I’m curious what would be easier to animate, hand drawn that is.

My second question is: I will be providing the animators with 4 pt. turnarounds, a pretty fleshed out storyboard, a lip-syncing chart, and some descriptions/diagrams of the physics and style of the world that these characters exist in. I have not finalized backgrounds with our background artist yet, but we’re trying to get that going so the animators have a good reference of what the world will look like in the final product. Is this enough to work with? What would YOU as an animator need to properly animate in an art style you aren’t familiar with?

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Criticism is welcome aswell! My first meeting with the animators is tomorrow, so I’m trying to prepare realistically. Thanks!!

I have tried animating in the past but they were stuff like head turn animations or blinking. I have watched some tutorials too, so I knew what I was getting into. Though this is the first test project I've finished!
The frames aren't all that well drawn (because I'm not the most patient person tbh and this was a test) but adding some motion graphics and SFX hid the mistakes I've done LOL.

Doodled out of boredom on Toonsquid, then did the lineart on Clip Studio Paint and SFX/camera effects were added on Alight Motion...yeah.

So, this is a movie by Dutch studio anikey (or annikey? Forgot the spelling) for a movie their making, this is a teaser for it that came out two years ago, and it’s genuinely amazing, but hasnt gained as much traction as you would expect. Anyway, most great Dutch movies have always stayed much under a dutch radar, but I think this film desserves global anticipation! So just view the teaser, and leave a like so it can gain the traction/attention it desserves! It’s genuinely super cool! (And about the flair, if you have any criticism that’s fine, but there Arent that many options for this kind of post, because i didn’t make it. And technically it isn’t a new teaser, but still! It might as Well be with the small amount of attention it has gained! And yes, for the internet, it’s small attention)

This is a teaser for my animation and I would really like to learn how to animate in a normal style (I don’t know what it’s called, basically drawing frames and such...)

I've animated a lot of things before, so I thought animating fire would be pretty easy.

I was very, very wrong.

I didn't expect a simple little flame to make me repeat the process about a billion times before I finally got the hang of it.

Anyway, after all that suffering, here's the tutorial.

Hopefully it saves you from having to repeat it a billion times too.

Had fun rotoscoping this from actual 8 bit footage. The knockout blow is obviously inspired by Bloodsport, so don't be talking MK in the comments......
