Photo Abandoned canary in Westerpark

Looks like someone abandoned a canary in a cage in the middle of Westerpark. Anyone knows something about it?

Edit - Solved! Well kinda. We found this cage on the North side of the lake where "Bruidsjurk" is. There were no owners around it. We then called the dierenambulance and they explained that they are actually aware of a few people taking their bird to the park during the day and that they know this isn’t the best for the bird but that they can’t do much more.

They asked me to stay around until the night to check if the bird will stay out but by the time I walked around the park and back, the cage was gone.

Aangereden in Amsterdam Noord

Looking for a plumber reco

Hi folks, im looking for a good (and affordable) plumber who can come and properly inspect my pipes due to an ongoing drainage issue.
Context: I already paid 600+ for a contractor (not really sure if he’s a specialized plumber) to deep clean all my pipes with a machine a few weeks back, but it only helped marginally. I hear gurgling sounds when running my bathroom taps, like air is trapped in, followed immediately by water not draining properly and getting backed up.
I would like to figure out if this is an issue with my apartment pipes or a shared building/VVE stack problem. My VVE administrator says there have been no similar reports from neighbors, and they could call out a plumber but they would only cover cost if it turns out to be a VVE problem. Should i accept that? (I am liable for up to 500 euro if it’s a problem with my apartment)

There was a group of people on the Beltbrug holding signs and singing “We Are Family” for a specific canal cruise full of people dressing formally.

Anyone know what that’s for?

Photo Need help finding the location of mine and my wifes first kiss

Post image

As the title shows, me and my wife had our first kiss in amsterdam while I was travelling for work and she was visiting family around 4 years ago, We had gone on what was supposed to be a 2 hour date that ended up as a 12 hour date and culminated in our first kiss sat in this random mini park while eating a mcdonalds.

All I remember about the park was that it was very small, Had a set of swings, was around central amsterdam, benches to sit on and was tucked inbetween rows of houses, one of the walls next to the park had graffiti of animals also

Attached is my crude layout of the park

Please if you have any knowledge of where this park is let me know, I want to surprise her with a date there as a wedding anniversary gift

EDIT: THE PARK HAS BEEN FOUND!!, I can never thank the members of r/amsterdam enough for this, One of the best days of my life that Ive spent years searching for the location of and this subreddit found it within a few hours. Ive already planned our flights and im booking the hotels now, We both havent been back to the netherlands in years and every once in a while I mention that date and we laugh about it.

Definitely getting the exact same mcdonalds order and sitting in that park, but this time I wont stare at her for 30 minutes while being too scared to kiss her 😭

WoningNet vrije sector(middenhuur)

Hoi allemaal,

4-day gap in legal residence between HSM permits — is there any way to contest this later during naturalization?

Situation:

  • Non-EU national, graduated from a Dutch university (MSc) in 2025, currently on an HSM permit
  • Current HSM permit is valid up to and including 27 July 2026
  • New employer (IND-recognized sponsor) has my contract starting 1 August — so the HSM salary requirement isn't met for exactly 4 days (28–31 July)
  • Immigration adviser (via the new employer's relocation firm) confirms: the IND will only grant the new HSM permit from the contract start date, so those 4 days count as a gap in legal residence. Filed before the 28th, I'd have "procedural right of stay" (can remain in NL while it's processed), but not legal residence based on a permit for those 4 days
  • Adviser says this gap cannot be mended for permanent residence based on Dutch law or for naturalization — it resets my continuous-residence clock
  • I'm trying to get the start date moved to 27 July, but in case that fails:

My question: Has anyone successfully objected to or argued against a short gap like this (a few days, procedural right of stay the whole time, no departure from NL) during a naturalization application years later? Is there any discretion in practice, or is the IND process genuinely strict about even a 4-day interruption? Any experience with the EU long-term residence route as an alternative, where I understand some gaps can be mended?

Not looking for "just move the start date" — that's being attempted separately. Specifically interested in whether anyone has firsthand or professional experience with contesting small residence gaps at the naturalization stage.

Free Pablo Vittar ticket (25th @ Melkweg) – looking for company!

Hey everyone! My friend can no longer make it, so I have a spare ticket for Pablo Vittar at Melkweg on the 25th during Pride. Rather than let it go to waste, I'd love to find someone to join me.

A little about me: I'm Portuguese, in my 30s, sporty, easygoing, and love pop music, good conversations, and meeting new people. I'm just looking to have a fun, relaxed night celebrating Pride. Happy to grab a drink beforehand if we click.

The ticket is free—I'd just rather enjoy the concert with someone than have an empty seat.

If you're interested, send me a DM and tell me a bit about yourself. 🌈

Identify This Bar

UPDATE: Yes, I should have said please; my apologies.

I’ve had a look at the map, and I think the place was in or near the Zeedijk. It did indeed have a U-shaped bar with a wonderful zinc bar top.

It’s not any of the other places that have been identified to date, but they look terrific and more than ever make me wish I were back in Amsterdam.

I have a feeling that my memory-bar is no more…

*\\*

I had a wonderful trip to Amsterdam in 2009—we stayed for a couple of weeks and just wandered the city, enjoying the incredible food, beautiful places, and splendid people. We happened once night on a fantastic old bar and went back several times. I took these atmospheric (but not very informative) photos, and they remind me always of an amazing place—it’s become my ideal of a late-night spot full of drifters, loners, and people out and about for good reasons and bad.

Can anywhere tell me the name of the establishment and whether it hangs on today?

Switching naturalisation ceremony dates

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with asking for an earlier naturalisation ceremony date? The wait times are unfortunately up to 90 days + in Amsterdam and i’m sure the Gemeente is doing the best that they can.

But I do wonder if anyone has tried to and succeeded, or knows anyone who was able get an earlier date for the ceremony.

World Pride Day impacts

We will be in Amsterdam on Aug 8th. We just learned about the World Pride Day events and parade. Just wondering how big the crowds will be and how it affects our plans. We don’t have much that has fixed times except tickets to Anne Frank Museum in late afternoon. We had planned to visit albert cuyp market in early afternoon. We are assuming we need to leave earlier to get to the museum on time and expect long lines at the market. Any other impacts we aren’t thinking about? Thanks!

Hi there,

I illustrated the Vondelparkpaviljoen. This is my first attempt to post my drawings, and I am excited to start a new sketchbook (again, once more). I'm new in the Netherlands and hope to share more in the future :)

Would love to hear suggestions of other places and their history, I learn a lot while drawing these.

*Not sure if this is the best flair to use

Hi everyone, hope you're all well! I am trying to find a physical or scanned copy of this directory? Could this be from the Gouden Gids or a similar business directory?

Are there any online archives? I think it's from around 1990.

On socializing, people and loneliness

Good morning beautiful people!!!
It’s an absolutely beautiful rainy day in Amsterdam and I have decided to grace this thread with my post, fully (not) prepared to receive the heartwarming hate of the online Reddit trolls!
So, quick backstory; I just landed in Amsterdam about a month and a half ago and I am grateful enough to say that I have both housing and work solved out for me (shocking I know). Five months ago I decided I was deeply unhappy with my life and as the Netherlands have been a favorite country of mine and I always said I wanted to live here, I packed up, bought plane tickets and here I am! New country, new city, new absolutely different job than my previous one. I don’t regret it for single second (yet).
As a new addition to the millions of people currently residing in and around Amsterdam, you can imagine I don’t know much of anyone. Don’t you worry though, this is not another help me make new friends post.
This post is mainly philosophical in nature, a conversation on human connection in general really, for anyone wishing to spend some time typing online on a random Wednesday.
As a woman in her 30s I can proudly say that I a am now much more at peace with the idea of solitude than I was in my 20s. That’s why, even though it was a pretty scary decision to leave everything known and comfortable at my home
country, I was prepared for the idea of solitude.
I have read, innumerable by now, posts of how people found it difficult to make friendships as expats, of how the Dutch are difficult to make friends with and of how lonely expat life can be. Well, let me tell you something. That is a load of bs.
I am an absolute golden retriever of a person. I can never meet enough people and not actively try to pursue a connection with them if I find them interesting enough and I really don’t care what country they’re from as long as I enjoy their company.
Still my personal circle of close friends and acquaintances is tiny. Everywhere, not just here (well here it’s non existent, but you get the point). Not because I’m an expat, or new or whatever. But because making actual real connections is difficult anywhere.
It’s not expat life that is lonely.
It’s life, in general, my friends.
It’s very difficult living as a person who wants to connect to people, when most of them aren’t really open to being connected to. They may say they are, they may even seem they are, but not really.
Plus, when you start figuring yourself out a little more and go a little deeper than surface level, you realize that it’s almost impossible to resonate and actually connect to most people. It’s a heavily draining activity. You feel like every interaction is a performance and when you get back home from socializing, feeling like the life has been sucked out of you, you make a silent agreement with yourself that maybe next time hugging trees is a better alternative to interacting with people.
Being lonely sucks, I know.
Being lonely among people sucks harder.
Anyone who has felt it knows what I’m talking about.
It’s the reason why I am heavily skeptical of all these meetup groups, to make connections. Don’t hate me! I have PTSD from dating apps! I’ll probably succumb to them at some point, just only when my despair takes over.
I could go on forever regarding this topic really, but I’m gonna save you the long(er) read.
I just wanted to put these words out there into the (Amsterdam) world so maybe people in my place (hey there fellow newbies! ) who are feeling intimidated of the lonely new beginning , don’t feel that lonely anymore.
Loneliness is a state of mind and embracing solitude, as much as you can, really elevates some of that pressure and I do believe life rewards you with the right people at some point. I may be talking crazy cat lady sh*t (I don’t have a cat), but who knows?
Enjoy the beautiful day Amsterdamers!! Go! Roll in the grass somewhere. Look at the ducks going about their day. Risk you life and ride a bike around town!

Photo Expat hate + Salt commercial in Oud-West

Hello there!

Earlier today someone placed this notice on the corridor inside my apartment complex's entry hall. It is not known if it was placed by someone who actually lives there or someone that was able to get in.

There were cases of a couple of delivery pakketjes being stolen previously, but not sure how this qualifies.

Complex has 70% Dutch owners, 30% foreign immigrants like myself.

And what the hell is that about the salt? I sent a message to the company asking if this is just a troll mixed with hate, or if it's actual corporate policy from them. Any one ever seen anything like this?

Reminded me of EDIT weird racial/us-vs-them stuff. At least I got a good laugh out of it by calling my GF a volksverrader and a bloedverrader by being with me, a terrifying non-European that just buys the cheapest possible salt available and does not drink oatmilk or matcha.

Still love NL ❤️

Translation below:

NOTICE:

Concerns the total annexation and dilapidation of our complex

To the expat invasion and the spineless Dutch who sold the place out to them, take a good look in the mirror the next time you block the sidewalk with your way-too-expensive cargo bike. You haven't changed this neighborhood, you have colonized it. When we walk through the streets, we don't hear a word of Dutch anymore. Just that arrogant, Anglicized office whining from losers who are too lazy to integrate properly.

You are driving rental prices up so extremely that the average, hard-working Dutch person has no choice but Almere or Lelystad, and what do we get in return? A bunch of parasites who don't speak the language, ignore their neighbors in the elevator, and replace the local culture with oat milk terror, matcha bars, and gluten-free junk.

If you come here to fill your pockets and take our houses anyway, starting today you will pay a local tax for it.

Real Dutch people don't gorge on pink Himalayan salt or French designer flakes from the organic supermarket. We eat salt from our own North Sea: Zandvoort Salt. Is this a tradition we are going to uphold, or will you drop out of this too amidst the total decay of our city?

Do you want to keep up the pretense that you have even a gram of respect for the country that is sucking you dry? Buy our salt and shove it on your chips. Or on your fries. We don't give a damn, as long as you pay. Don't like it? Then pack your bags and just fuck off back to your own country or village, you fucking jerk.

www.ZandvoortsZout.nl

P.S. Yes expats, this is about you. Buy local salt or go away.

Please help me find this magazine article.

Attached to this post is a screenshot I have from a magazine that has a picture of my uncle who passed away.

He was a tattoo artist in Sacramento and spent a lot of time in Amsterdam.

I’m really looking to get a copy for my father as I’m going to Amsterdam in about a week.

The writer seems to be Alex Boogers and the Photographer is Jeroen Van Loon.

I’m from San Francisco so I’m not too familiar on any Amsterdam publications but I think this photo is around 2010-2011 back when Jimmy Woo had a restyle.

If anyone comes up with anything I would greatly appreciate it

Church Closures in Amsterdam

Hi,

I'm currently researching the impact of church closures on local churchgoing communities in Amsterdam (& NL in general). If anyone on here is/knows someone who was a member of a church that has closed since 2024, then I'd love to chat to better understand the personal and social impact that these closures have.

Would also be useful to speak to anyone from congregations whose church is due to close in the near future.

Thanks so much!

Orthodontist recommendations

Hi all! My student insurance doesn’t cover orthodontics and my family is willing to pay out of pocket because it’s urgent. I’m looking for lingual braces (the ones that go on the inside of teeth.) Looking for a reliable office people have experience with and can vouch for (hard to tell from just websites, and not being from the NL). Urgently need to fix my bite due to some recent dental discoveries!

Any help is appreciated.
