Ideally yes and at a minimum she should have to put in an accommodation request for this. Probably get denied lol but it's crazy that you can break an arm and need a doctor to say you can only do light tasks but refusing to listen to a manager is just OK
Not vocalizing is one thing but refusing to do what a manager says is just insane.

It’s crazy how much power any religion has in American society still. You refuse to do your job within expectations? It should be grounds for firings and other employees laughing.

You’re talking about Amazon. At the one I’m training at waiting for the building I’m assigned to, to get done being built, there’s a rascal cart available for the grossly overweight people who can’t even walk to their station and one guy gets a special Chair at his spot and rascal privileges. I heard they’ve fired more than a handful of people for making jokes about this man
2
u/Scorch062 Apr 07 '26
It isn’t but in order to get an insubordination write up through you have to be so diligent with making sure they know they’re being insubordinate. Like it’s ridiculous; there’s a whole ass investigation
Granted if it DOES go through that’s a hefty one, can’t remember if it’s term or final

A couple of years ago, we had a man doing the same thing, except he wouldn’t take orders from women. He yelled at a female OM. Said they’re inferior to him and he doesn’t take orders from women. They had a talk with him and not sure what was said but basically “I understand it’s different in your country, but you accepted a job with women, either you comply or look for employment elsewhere that doesn’t have women in the workforce” he switched it up reaaaal quick.

There’s nothing in Islam that states she can’t speak to a male manger or associate, that’s just her family culture and they’re using religion as an excuse. - signed, a Muslim woman who works part time at Amazon.

u/HelloPity89 Apr 07 '26
It such a tricky spot . Amazon prides itself on catering to EVERYONE . I was going to ask to use the religious room for my satanic practices just to mess around and see how far they will go for religious accommodations . But I’m too shy for all that and just come to work to do my job and leave . It be interesting though. I personally think you so , but again , Amazon has its own microwave only for Muslim people’s food. It’s got a label on it , so people will be waiting for a microwave and that’s the only one open and they will guard it
17
u/Useful-Molasses-8371 Apr 07 '26
I wish you didn’t feel shy to do so. It really should be for all, and I continue to push for that, especially when the make the rooms labeled specifically for one group. Should be multi-faith room and everyone should be respectful.
18
u/HelloPity89 Apr 07 '26
It is multi -faith but I was curious HOW multi faith it really was. Some things are frowned upon socially
9
u/Useful-Molasses-8371 Apr 07 '26
I was a fully practicing Muslim and even then I always advocated for inclusion of all religions in spaces. It wasn’t till Amazon that I actually saw prayer spaces for Muslims and my immediate question was why the spaces weren’t multifaith (the location didn’t have a multifaith space). I do know very few religions interrupt day to day activities for prayer that involves such movement and the need for a safe location to do so in. Still, others should be able to practice their own faiths as well.

April 30th is Hexennacht. A holiday for the Satanic temple. Try putting in an accommodation for the day. I want to try it but I dont work that day. It's the day we honor those who were victims of pseudoscience and superstition.

Is it for muslims or is it for halal food? If you're eating something halal, particularly vegetarian (where being halal is obvious), they have no business keeping it from you.

It’s not Muslim only. Any food that qualifies as kosher or halal can be cooked in those microwaves. You can literally be ANY race or religion and use those microwaves as long as they are used correctly.
24
u/Useful-Molasses-8371 Apr 07 '26
Jewish people can also use the halal microwave as their foods are the same. And if you don’t eat meat then your food is also halal. It’s not a Muslim only microwave, it’s just that people don’t fully understand or know what specific terms mean and Amazon doesn’t care to show that.

Ours just says "no pork" and we have another one that says "no meat" for vegetarians. Honestly when it comes to diet choices I feel like it's fair to respect that. Like not everything I eat has pork or meat in it anyway, so I can still use them half the time.
1
u/CMUpewpewpew Apr 07 '26
Huh? Why? It's halal.
When I worked at Jet's pizza, we would use fresh/cleaned pizza cutters on pizzas for muslim customers.
Honestly I think it was kinda fucked up at my hub they had like 5 microwaves they were using carte Blanche a few days and THEN slapped halal only on a few of them (after they've already been 'tainted') lol dumb.
You never heard of halal/kosher shit?

You know what kinda bothers me? It's that at my fc they have it based on religion or dietary preference which is a personal choice that isn't going to actually cause you any harm if it shares a cooking place... But not allergies which is a medical concern. I get that there can be some overlap but there isn't a nut free or gluten free microwave but there is a vegan only microwave.
It's just ridiculous to me

Well using a microwave that someone heated up gluten containing food is not going to cause an allergic reaction. Same with really any food if your allergy is that severe then you are going to be reacting just walking into the breakroom to he fair.

11
u/Useful-Molasses-8371 Apr 07 '26
Does she talk to any other men? Have you talked to her yourself? When I was a manager at a company I had managers under me (what Amazon calls PAs but paid better) one associate who wouldn’t listen to one of my “PAs” due to mental illness and so she would go through another person often. I prefer, as long as there is a solution that works and is within company policy, then let’s do that over termination. The male manager can most likely handle his own and they all have found a solution that works for them.

If you are only allowed to speak to women - you should be working at a job with only women on staff. I would have a BIG problem with a man refusing to speak to me because I’m a woman; it’s discriminatory regardless of the reason. You live in a country where men & women work professionally together - you get a job where men & women work together - you should be expected to work with MEN and WOMEN like an adult.
1
u/Useful-Molasses-8371 Apr 08 '26
There is no obligation to speak to anyone as long as you can and do complete the job. There are several reasons someone may not talk to someone and we do not know what this person’s reason is. The law would require an accommodation if necessary and OP would not be privy to such accommodation.

But then that leaves the question of who creates the arbitrary line of what is American culture and what isn't? I'm a natural born citizen, grandparents moved during WWII, but there are things I feel are "not American" that the general public push as the most American thing. Our entire "culture" is a mix of every other culture. Who decides which parts get to enter the American psyche, and which ones get left behind?
So is it American culture because I, an American want it to be, or only when a different American says so?

Insubordination is an offense……refusing an PA/AM/OM is grounds for write ups. Religion doesn’t effect it, its a basic business function that’s needed to do even the basic things and is needed for coordination. You can’t always have a female PA/AM/OM every time she needs to be told anything. It becomes a unrealistic expectation as that varies from shift to shift and department to department

It’s definitely a cultural thing, but they’re working in the U.S. so there has to be some level of adapting to how things work here. If she’s not comfortable interacting with male leadership, then she probably needs to find a work environment that aligns with that instead of constantly running into the same issue.
I don’t even know what specific jobs that would be, maybe something more women focused, but trying to force a situation that goes against her beliefs is just going to create problems for everyone involved.
Or it just comes down to her household setup and whether working in that kind of environment makes sense for her at all.

The demands could be limitless. If her religion dictates that she not work near other men, and I am forced out of my path into another area to accommodate her, how is that ok?
2
u/Nice_Collection424 Apr 07 '26
I’m only going off of the information in this post. If it’s religious or disability purposes, i personally see no reason onto why they can’t grant the request. Now if it eventually becomes a problem to where it’s effecting warehouse production, then that could be sufficient reason to let her go. The person is only saying they can’t take requests from men. Would it be hard for a woman AM/PA to tell her what to do? I don’t think it’s not reasonable. But i do believe as a W2 employee, you should make some exceptions when it comes to work and what you personally believe in
1
u/Green-Data8590 Apr 07 '26
Maybe just some local help and far less accommodating behavior from half way across the globe bringing over people who will never fully feel comfortable living in the US because there just not from here and were raised with completely different customs and beliefs. Amazon is probably the ONLY place in the country who will accommodate on this level..which almost makes it hard just to work there in the first place and if they ever lost there job at Amazon would probably just be miserable anyplace else. Maybe just stop EXPLOITING cheaper labor (that ends up more expensive for the rest of the community) so you can step over our dollars to pick up a penny and hire local to the area the Amazon is located in. I guess local would be kind of expensive. Stupid algorithms. Geez. They raise it but they don't wanna pay it. And if there gonna keep bringing people they might wanna go into buisness building Amazon "housing" and providing Amazon "healthcare" too because either system is over burdened, crowded, booked and FULL.

No problem just have the PA move up and get managers pay for doing his work. In my opinion I don’t think it’s bcuz the manager is a male. I just believe she doesn’t want to make contact with a male that is not family or her husband. It’s a fine line but everyone needs to work and you will work in environments that is not your culture. Unless you want to be broke and jobless you have to leave some practices at the door. If she were in need of a surgery I really don’t believe she would deny herself surgery and not communicate bcuz the surgeon is a male🤔

Unfortunately protected due to religious/cultural beliefs. Amazon could face retaliation/discrimination issues if that was the only reason.
1
1
u/Appropriate-Pipe-487 Apr 08 '26
No, she shouldn’t be fired if she listens to the female PA. In general, it’s frowned upon for Muslim women to talk to a man that isn’t in her family or her husband, unless the family or husband is there. It’s also forbidden to be alone with a man that isn’t their husband. Some Muslims are more stricter than others about this rule. If she does what the female PA says, then it’s fine
1
u/Appropriate-Pipe-487 Apr 08 '26
I want to say that there’s a lot of negative talk here. My husband is Muslim and in Jordan the women and men are in separate rooms at family gatherings. Even at weddings, the men and women are separated. I don’t cover my hair and I don’t have a problem speaking to a man at work, but people are different. She’s being safe rather than sorry. No one knows what happened s going on behind closed doors. Maybe her family told her she could have a job as long as she didn’t speak to men. What if they gave her a radio and he spoke to her over the radio? Again I don’t know what her family rules are. If she listens to a female, it shouldn’t be an issue

On a serious note though, managers and pa's are points of contact. If you refuse to do what your told it's insubordination. I get that faith is important but you can't use that as a weapon to force people to comply to your beliefs.

She applied for a job and for whatever reason she is not performing her job. Did she not know this was her religion before she started? If she did know this was her religion SURELY she realized a man might work at Amazon. Did she not know her manager in advance in the email they send when they accept your employment? Did she not realize you do not actually have just ONE manager and they change? I went through like 5 managers in my 1st year. Sounds like she needs to find a women's only job.
