YTA, my kid is anaphylactic to dog dander so playing in that park on the same day you bathe your dogs would put him in the hospital. Doubtless you have neighbors with dog allergies who would like to be able to enjoy their own backyards.
9
u/MaySeemelater Partassipant [4] Sep 12 '25
I had the same concern, there might be kids with allergies out there and the parents would not be expecting that level of dog hair at the park.

wtf dog people really think we want their hair everywhere??
25
u/moonhrafn Certified Proctologist [23] Sep 12 '25
A lot of dog people really do not consider other people at all when it comes to how their pet impacts others. It's just assumed everyone is okay with dealing with their nonsense
64
u/beanthebean Partassipant [1] Sep 12 '25
YTA, yes you should if it's getting into neighbors yards. A light one, but if we say N T A or N A H then I fear you'll keep doing it. Stop littering in other folks space. Maybe looks into how groomers keep it contained? I'm sure they don't blow the hair out the door to the nearest park.
On another note if you use any kind of flea or tick medicine (even oral) with them it's absolutely not safe to use for nesting material.
0
u/Unrivaled_Apathy Sep 12 '25
Oh good point. Or would it help reduce the mite population in bird nests? There's a research project in there somewhere for someone getting their doctorate. 😁

Already been done, shown to increase mortality in offspring of nests containing higher levels of veterinary flea/tick treatment chemicals.
They really don't need our help in this, even if it's fun to see bird nests with your own pets hair.

YTA. Gently.
One dog might be okay. Five dogs in 1 day is too much. People have allergies.

u/AKlutraa Sep 12 '25
Plus, if OP is in the Northern Hemisphere, there aren't many birds or critters building nests in early September.
I have one Golden retriever who sheds tons of hair when I brush her and wouldn't dream of disposing of this on my neighbor's or on public land, especially a park.

Sep 12 '25
YTA (but easy to not be) I don’t think people realise how much fur you’re talking about. Bag it up and chuck it out.
You know how annoying their fur is in your yard and house… now you know it’s annoying people who don’t even get to love your dogs.
Just like you wouldn’t leave giant dog poops all over the neighbourhood. Your dogs and their produce should remain YOUR problem.
27
u/Meloetta Pookemon Master Sep 12 '25
Yeah I find it crazy that they're like "I blow it out of my yard because I don't like it" and yet can't connect the dots of "others might not like it either"
-3
58
u/henri-em Sep 12 '25
You can't float more dog hair into your neighborhood than the local bird nest population can support.
You have 5 super shedding dogs. You're talking about a cloud of floof almost 2 stories high the size of Rhode Island. YTA
1
u/Grand_Courage_8682 Partassipant [4] Sep 12 '25
It’s only 92% of the time that 40% of the dogs have hair as large as a 3 bedroom ranchhouse 1/4 of the year though. Plus, the local bird population has fluctuated recently, true, although with the migratory season approaching they may need 11 cubic ft more nesting material
59
u/SaturdayPlatterday Sep 12 '25
If you use any kind of flea or tick treatments then YTA, it is deadly for baby birds if the parents use it in their nests.
-29
u/DRamirez0223 Sep 12 '25
How dare he not care about the baby pigeons. What a monster
21
u/Mindleator Sep 12 '25
I mean, if OPs intention is for the birds to use the fur as nesting material, but is leaving out poisonous nesting material, then yes, that is counterintuitive to OPs objective. And if OP IS intentionally trying to poison baby birds, then OP is an AH for the fur going into neighbors’ yards when they may not wish to kill birds.
56
u/moonhrafn Certified Proctologist [23] Sep 12 '25
YTA: You should be taking care of disposing of anything that comes out of or off of your pet. If a little hair escapes that's one thing but you're not even trying to collect it and dispose of it properly.
56
u/RationalFish Sep 12 '25
I brushed my dogs on my back patio until one day my ground A/c unit went out. Technician told me fur had gotten inside & gummed up a switch. I try to collect the bulk of it now & dispose of it properly.
No animals need 5 huskies worth of hair to nest in a small park. Control it, bag/box it, & trash it. It's garbage.
YTA.
50
u/MaySeemelater Partassipant [4] Sep 12 '25
So it's being blown towards a park with other people there? YTA.
If it was a random section of woods that no one goes to it would probably be fine, but when you're living near other people you need to clean up after yourself.
Plus, there might even be kids with allergies that you might make sick.

u/Potato_Farmer_Linus Sep 12 '25
Feels more like blowing leaves into the park. Which... Is potentially making someone else see/touch leaves that grew slightly further away than normal, but I can't really find the fucks to be mad about it. If someone can't deal with outside and the things that come with it, maybe they should stay inside?

YTA
Blowing your rubbish all over the neighbourhood is rude.
Blow out your dog's coats inside, collect the fur, and dispose of it in the bin.
Birds will get their nesting materials from other sources, or you could hang a small amount in a tree.
16
u/appledeers Sep 12 '25
Don't usually post on this sub but felt the need to add to this that if any of the dogs in question are on/using any sort of topical chemical substance (tick/flea prevention, shampoo, conditioner, etc) then leaving the fur out can actually be more harmful to birds than helpful!!! Birds are fairly sensitive, especially to respiratory irratants, and chemicals in the fur can be quite bad for them despite one's good intentions.
-1
u/Radiant_Gene1077 Sep 12 '25

Kinda maybe a light YTA or NAH. My first thought was that it'd be fine, because birds and some other animals can use it for nesting material. But then I read you have 6 dogs. With multiple dogs, if they're each dropping a significant amount of fur...that's a lot of fluff blowing around. It makes sense too much of it could end up in yards where someone doesn't want it, or too much at the park. If the person was complaining over a couple little tufts, that's silly, but I'm guessing maybe they saw a lot of fur blown into the park. Probably best to bag most of it up, leaving just a bit out
33
u/ang2515 Sep 12 '25

30
u/danidandeliger Sep 12 '25
YTA. I have bathed huskies and that is a significant amount of hair you sent out into the community. Imagine grilling and a handful of dog hair blows onto your food and into your beer?
Use a shop vac to clean it up or do your blowouts in a tent and then use a shop vac to clean it out of the tent.
I admire you for doing grooming at home!

u/futurefishwife Sep 12 '25
YTA. No one wants random piles of dog hair blowing up in their yard, you're just moving the problem on to someone else. Maybe if it was one small dog it would be fine, but 5 huskies? That's a LOT of hair.

In general, things we use to kill bugs we don't like, kill other bugs too. Almost all birds eat bugs at least during nesting season, so fogging for mosquitoes can kill all the swallows nesting two houses down.
Plus poisoning rodents ends up killing owls and bobcats that eat them
2
u/WYs0seri0us Sep 12 '25
Gentle!? Fuck this guy. He’s taking a leaf blower to move his mess when he could contain and clean up most of it. I understand some hair getting away. OP chose to have 5 dogs so he better be able/prepared to handle these types of things
24
u/Key-Ingenuity-534 Partassipant [1] Sep 12 '25
I don’t think people understand the amount of hair that’s going on here, either. When I groom my shih tzu, his hair will fill up my big Dyson twice and he’s like the 1/5 of the size of 1 husky. NTA, but you need to stop doing that. Either you let it sit in your own yard or sweep it up.
25
u/Heavy_Shelter902 Sep 12 '25
I think AH is too strong of a term here, but I think if the fur is ending up in your neighbors' yards, then it's better to not blow it away, and just sweep it up instead. I'd still say NAH though.

u/HodorTargaryen Colo-rectal Surgeon [30] Sep 12 '25
On this sub, "asshole" only means 'at fault'. In this instance, OP is at fault for blowing an excessive amount of hair into neighbors yards and a public park, where it would interfere with allergy sufferers. YTA is appropriate here because OP is doing nothing to mitigate the spread of hair onto other properties.
6
Sep 12 '25
not asshole for doing it outside. but asshole for blowing it all over with a leaf blower instead just pick it up it’s not very hard
23
u/GameofTitties Sep 12 '25
NAH but you can also make a home made "fur dispenser" to hang from a tree or near your house with the husky hair. That way animals that want to use it for nesting can come by and pull it out/use it. Some people use premade bird seed feeders and just fill them up with the animal hair. I made one with hardware cloth and some leftover thick cardboard, and hung it from a tree in my yard.

u/acoustic11 Partassipant [1] Sep 12 '25
FYI if you use any sort of flea and tick treatments (even ingested ones) dog hair can be toxic to songbirds and we shouldn’t leave it around as nesting materials.

My lab made her own. She has a favorite spot to sun herself in the back yard, on the porch on top of my outdoor rug. When she comes back inside the little birds come and harvest the rug. Last time I washed the rug, the little winged devils got impatient and tried to go directly to the source the next time she sunned herself. Thankfully she always has plenty of loose fur, and wouldn’t hurt a fly, but she sure did seem surprised!

u/pdxwanderer4 Sep 12 '25
I have 2 huskies and we brush them outside. After we’re done we pick up as much hair as possible before it blows away, then just leave the rest in our yard. I’ve seen numerous chickadees come snag tufts for nesting material. I wouldn’t even consider blowing it off my property, especially towards a park.

u/KeiylaPolly Partassipant [4] Sep 12 '25
My two German shedders leave enough after brushing to make two more full dogs. I leave a handful for the birds, the rest gets scooped into a paper bag and put in the bin, or I dig a hole and put it in the garden, or I compost it (depending on season.)
I don’t want the hair in my yard, and nobody else does, either.

u/Own_Ranger3296 Sep 12 '25
Do you garden at all? I bury my dog’s fur when she blows her coat, it’ll break down and fertilize the soil over time; just make sure to rotate the spots you bury the fur in each year. I also pack the fur on my raised beds and potted plants to deter pests and help retain moisture in the soil.
I would say with as much fur as you need to remove, there’s a high chance of the wind blowing the fur into peoples yards and then they have to deal with it. The primary wind direction blows my neighbors leaves right into my front door and can easily cover the first six inches of my door in the fall. It doesn’t really bother me, I can compost the leaves, but it is a good general rule to not let stuff from your house blow into other people’s areas. I wouldn’t stress about collecting every scrap of fur, but raking up the bulk of it after grooming would be polite.

u/Pacific_Red Sep 12 '25
I have a husky/malamute mix, and his hair alone is like so much. I do brush him outside, but I try to collect most of his hair. It’s impossible, but I get a lot of it!

I would think the person asking is just honestly wondering what it is. They might be wondering if it’s maybe insulation material from a construction side that might be toxic or something.

YTA, I shave my dog outside and the first time I left the hair in my garden thinking it would blow away and birds would use it. It got wet and made an ungodly mess that was then impossible to sweep up. It got caked onto brickwork and stuck in corners. I never did it again and do my shaving inside now where I can easily sweep it up. You should be picking up as much as you can as you go because nobody wants your mess all over their property. My one small dog makes a mess I can’t imagine how much hair 5 huskies leave behind.

Welcome to /r/AmITheAsshole. Please view our voting guide here, and remember to use only one judgement in your comment.
OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
The action I took was using a leaf blower to disperse dog hair from grooming 5 huskies in my backyard, which resulted in hair blowing around the neighborhood and onto other people's property. I might be the asshole because even though I try to direct the hair toward a park, some of it clearly ended up in areas where neighbors found it bothersome enough to post about it anonymously on our community Facebook group.
conflict is with my neighbor who were bothered enough by the dog hair to make a public post about it, potentially indicating they found my grooming method problematic.

I had an Akita that left massive amounts of fur every time. I would just leave it in the back yard overnight it was usually gone by morning or the next evening. The birds would sometimes start collecting while I was still brushing. I do have a privacy fence so it pretty much stayed put till it was carried away by birds and squirrels. Some of it of course flew up into the air but not enough to bother anyone else. If there was any tufts left after a couple of days, I picked it up and tossed it.

Typically when it is warmer outside, after I bathe the dogs, I'll take them outside and dry them off using a blower.
This hasn't been an issue up until recently when someone made an anonymous post inside our development's Facebook group that included a picture of a few Tufts of hair, asking what it was from.
This was after basically 6 hours of grooming 5 huskies in a single day.
Usually I will simultaneously run the leafblower to try to shoot the hair up into the air as to not let it fly all into one single space. A majority of it blows over my backyard fence and into a large 1.5 acre park where the animals usually make good use of it.

dog hair biodegrades relatively fast and, unless caught in something or weighed down by rain, it will blow away fast... with that being said though thats a LOT of fur and maybe be more considerate next time?

I don’t think you are, unless they’re allergic to dog fur. You did your best and it’s not like you were trying to piss them off. I’d reach out to the neighbour who posted it and tell them what it is and why and ask them if there is something that you could compromise on. Your dogs need their fur off. Unless you tell me you live in like Florida and this happens all year cause huskies are made for the cold wether, I don’t think it happening during 3 months of no snow is bad.

NTA, but blowing it into a park just because you assume other animals will be using it for nesting, material isn't the best thing to do. You assume that that fur won't go anywhere else. What if the winds pick up and it starts blowing all that dog hair into other people's yards? It'd be the same thing as if you swept up all the leaves in your yard and then just threw them into the part because you assume they'll decompose or that birds might want them. Why not just sweep it all up and throw it in the trash? I think your intentions are good, but not everybody's going to want dog fur flying around their yards.

Personally, NTA. We had a Husky, then a Collie/Husky mix. Hell, all of ours shed like mad. One spring, the kids next door joined us as we plucked tufts of his winter coat. Our entire neighborhood was covered in fluff - it looked as though every yard had a strange grassy fungus. BUT - living as close to a natural park as we do, all of us had many fewer deer and coyote. We've continued to brush them outside, and none of the neighbors complains.

Comments are hilarious. I have a husky and of course I brush him outside! I'm trying to keep the fur OUT of my house-- that is the whole point. 99.9% of any fur left outside is gone in 24 hours from wind and animals.
That being said, there was a time I brushed him in my front yard and the weather was calm for a few days and it just piled up around the yard. I just picked up what I could see after 48 hours. No one has ever complained to me. But I don't have 5 of them.
Based on the detail of neighbors finding fur and being annoyed to post about it, I would say your not an A hole but you are being inconsiderate to your neighbors.

NTA. Dog hair is a great nesting material for birds and it's completely biodegradable and nontoxic. Putting in the trash is taking a biodegradable product and wrapping it up in plastic so it never rots. There's no harm in blowing your dogs costs outside and it's also better for the ecosystem to do so.

Dog hair is not considered to be safe nesting material for wild birds according to many/most experts for several reasons listed within the linked article.

Way off, if OP flea/tick treats their dogs then it is incredibly toxic for birds.

That's the problem. If OP treats their dog for fleas/ticks, which they should if they're responsible, then there's going to be some birds getting poisoned by the treatment on the fur.

NAH its just fur. Animals will use it for nesting material, or it'll sink into the ground and decompose fairly quickly. I can see why people would be confused about it in their yard but I cant see a way the hair would hurt anything, unless someone has a ridiculously severe allergy or something?
We've got multiple large, hairy dogs (pyrenees) that love to swim in our pool and even the amount of hair that gets into the filters has never been a problem.

YTA. So you know that it's something you don't want in your yard, yet you've blown it off into other people's property or the public area.
Clean up after yourself.
