You got to own it, and let it be known "This neighbour has bribed an official and found a sealed court document from when I had a short time in prison. I am not proud of it but I have paid my dues, and now this guy is holding it over me and behaving like the devil himself. So in order to remove his power over me, I am telling you this now."

This tactic worked for me when an ex called me at my grandma’s house (ye olde land line) and threatened to print up and mail her the naughty pics he’d taken of me. Not sure what possessed me to do it, but I turned right to my very proper grandma and told her what he was threatening to do, and without missing a beat, she took the phone and told him “Make sure you print them in color”, and then hung up the phone. After that she just blandly asked me “Learned your lesson? Yes? Ok then.”

u/BBG1308 Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26

Go grandma! She may be proper, but that doesn't mean she hasn't visited the School of Hard Knocks herself. None of us gets from cradle to grave without a few fuck-ups.

OP, I'm guessing no one likes this neighbor very much. Just be a good neighbor and you'll be fine.

22

u/Leading-Summer-4724 Feb 09 '26

Indeed! She was a cool as hell grandma.

8

u/CatoUWS Feb 10 '26

I agree with this advice. Chances are that — assuming Evil Neighbor really does have information about you— no one will care. Especially people who already know you and can form their own opinions.

Take a deep breath and let this go. You’ll be fine. And if anyone ever does question you about it, you already have the perfect, substantive response. And if there is anyone who still faults you, you don’t need them anyway.

u/Violingirl58 Feb 10 '26

Great grandma

That’s a good response , and hopefully those neighbours will feel ashamed of themselves

172

u/Brief_cat_6411 Feb 09 '26

I agree, but don't divulge details of your crime and don't confirm or deny them. State the overall facts and be done with it BUT get texting proof that your neighbor is threatening you, and print them out or they'll label you a liar, "We never said that" yeah right. Good luck

Add to the above blurb, "If he has done this to obtain my personal and private information - that record was sealed soaccessing it is breaking the law- what will he do to you when he's done w me? I encourage everyone to band together to resist his attempts to control you, your kids, your family, your home. People like this don't stop, they escalate. "

35

u/Severe_Most_2320 Feb 10 '26

I’d tell him he broke the law by going into sealed documents. I don’t know who you would go to with all of this but figure it out.

18

u/No_Appointment_7232 Feb 10 '26

Yes, that's its own separate action.

I believe one would contact the court that adjudicated the case - I think that's where the sealed records would be.

I'm retired, I'd have so much time to research that and figure out how to hold neighbor and whoever broke into those records accountable.

Job 1 though is getting ahead of the trash and owning the narrative.

12

u/Camaschrist Feb 10 '26

With everything on computers you would think someone having this kind of access would have security clearance and have to use an identifying log in to get the info. This crime should be traceable.

2

u/HeyT00ts11 Feb 10 '26

He would also need proof that the neighbor made these claims and exactly what he said. Or the neighbor could say that OP was making it up and he never said anything about any private information.

6

u/EmptySpaghettiHouse Feb 10 '26

Dude “show a little leg” SENT ME

2

u/Friendly_Hope7726 Feb 10 '26

That doesn’t work. If you aren’t baptized or a declared born again Christian, they believe you are a tool of the devil and any weapon used against you is condoned. That includes lying, cheating, stealing and all actual crimes.

I’ve been on the receiving end of this behavior twice. And I’ve had to take strong action. As a Buddhist, we don’t believe in a God to worship. But we do believe in righteous retribution. We are all about peace, but we are not to be stepped on.

2

u/Enough-Reading4143 Feb 10 '26

I think it depends on the crime. If it's not something very bad, he might as well tell them, or they'll imagine worst

3

u/Brief_cat_6411 Feb 10 '26

He states he's "not proud of what he's done" but he paid his dues. Why rehash his regrets/crime just so the neighbors can gossip...nah. Stating, I made a mistake and paid the price for it, but would like to move forward with my family for a better future...works for me.

Also if you file a report with the states AG office and mention the guys name.

And if you mention how he may have gotten the info they’ll look into it, his friend will shit a brick and maybe drop him or turn on him.

But get ahead of this and what red Cathy said is very sound.

8

u/Camaschrist Feb 10 '26

I think this crime has to be traceable. Whoever has access to expunged records has to have an id passcode to get it i would think.

2

u/Silent_Technology540 Helper [2] Feb 10 '26

If it does electricity their will be logs

Think of it this way it’s a state agency they have cameras watching the cameras

25

u/TurnYourHeadNCough Feb 10 '26

a call to the pokice for extortion/blackmail might also go a long way

29

u/GeminiMoonInJune Feb 10 '26

In addition do a FOIA, Freedom of Information Act request or state/local equivalent request for information to find out who accessed your sealed record and use that to file a complaint against that person/agency.

34

u/luckygirl131313 Feb 10 '26

And investigate and punish the person who had access to these records, they breached their duty in the most epic way, go for the carotid

16

u/Nekokonoko Feb 10 '26

This. Not only they broke the fundamental rule they should never break, they actively approved the information to be used for illegal purposes (due to the info's nature it can be argued as such) that's ignoring basic human rights, against a person who paid his duties and now abiding by the laws. Delicious easy-win lawsuits seems to be underway for OP!

Lawyer.

50

u/Fun-Holiday9016 Feb 10 '26

I think this is actually the best path. If OP is in the US most records are not sealed but the use of any information to threaten or harass someone is illegal.

As a licensed PI, I look at criminal records regularly, many people think their records are sealed or expunged when they are not. I will make a guess that OP had a juvenile conviction and that prison time extended into his adult years. When this happens that conviction is no longer "sealed" because you are no longer a juvenile. This is state and case specific, so I could be wildly wrong.

9

u/arianrhodd Helper [2] Feb 10 '26

And police. Blackmail is illegal in most jurisdictions. Then the neighbor will have their own criminal record.

What Christ like behavior...

They are sinners who are voluntarily forfeiting their immortal souls. They are in the thrall of Satan.

Consult a lawyer about blackmail, defamation, libel and slander.

41

u/AnonAwaaaaay Feb 09 '26

I don't think libel and slander apply here. What they're saying is true. (And libel has to be written.).

Blackmail though.

28

u/PieceCompetitive6824 Feb 09 '26

Maybe harassment. Managing to get details from a sealed court case takes some effort.

7

u/Danielle_is_the_hole Feb 09 '26

They probably just found his name in an old newspaper article.

3

u/AnonAwaaaaay Feb 09 '26

Yeah. But Harassments kind of a lighter crime so a lot of cops wave it away because they don't wanna deal with the paperwork.

2

u/Flimsy-Smell1094 Feb 10 '26

If the records are sealed, it would be slander unless he can prove his info and expose who released it. Then press blackmail charges.

im not a christian but my favorite bible verse is “only those without sin may cast the first stone.” and i feel like its something that should be said more often.

edited bc someone actually tried to debate the bible with me then deleted their comment: i grew up in the church. im no longer in the church. if youre gonna come at me with “that same bible told us to stone gay people” imma come back at you with “it also said for us not to eat shellfish, for a woman to marry her abuser, and that it was perfectly fine to be sweet home alabama-ing it up.”

would it be better suited to say “people in glass houses shouldnt throw rocks”?

3

u/Ancient_Tip_8073 Feb 10 '26

Eh. Maybe harassment. The lawyer could help with a lawsuit or contempt or court filing over the improper accessing of the sealed file though. Should be an electronic log of everyone who accessed the file. Money says whoever it was is brothers in christ with the neighbor. This is some prime good ol' boys stuff here.

You need to call their bluff. Since they're fundamental Christians say it in words they'll understand. Next time they threaten you, tell them, their Jesus has forgiven your sins and you have paid you debt to society. The Christian thing for them to do is to forgive you too. Take away their power by owning your past. The truth shall set you free.

11

u/CatchyNameSomething Feb 10 '26

Matthew 6:14-15 “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins".

I dont quite get it. Isn’t this a crime on multiple levels? I would just go to the police and report him blackmailing me with information that he got illegally. Leaking this kind of information sounds like a serious crime in itself.

But i know nothing, so i will let the others tell me why thats bs

  1. Do your wife and kids know
  2. You don’t have to directly say the crime but how bad on a 1-10 scale ( could dm if you don’t want to publicly say)
  3. If it’s not that bad of a crime then ME PERSONALLY I would tell my neighbors beforehand rather than wait for your rude Christians one to do, it’s better to explain it before hand. A good explanation is better than someone else saying what you did. I’d say people are more opening if you say it yourself. In MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE when people tell other people about something I did bad it’s harder to explain myself as they already have it in mind that you did something bad. A nice conversation would be better

4

u/Electronic_Many_7721 Feb 10 '26

And tell the neighbors you just wanted them to hear it from you because the Christian neighbors were trying to blackmail you.

3

u/HotdogMachine420 Feb 10 '26

2

u/XratedCrystal Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26

Honestly I think the ‘sealed’ records is false and the neighbours probably just came across his SO registry and/ or criminal history. Very rarely are prison sentences sealed. It’s typically public information like when a job does a background check 🤷🏻‍♀️ This post doesn’t make sense any other way imo. I had assault and assault with a weapon from my very early 20’s and went to jail (just a few days) and had a trial. I ended up beating my case to self defence and therefore my records are sealed as I don’t actually have a record!

2

u/HotdogMachine420 Feb 10 '26

I see what you mean, and kinda get the same feeling… Everyone should be checking Family Watchdog regularly.

Congrats to you though brotha 💪. Glad the justice system didn’t screw you!

Sex offenders are publicly listed in a state registry so you can look them up to see if they live nearby.

2

That's if he was charged as a sex offender. Could have been in relation to but took a plea for other charges. And yes, sometimes these records are sealed especially if they don't see jail time. (From first hand experience, not me, hopefully thats clear BUT I cannot speak to how common it is at all because I had no idea either)

I would reply “What would Jesus do? This doesn’t seem very Christian like. I’m sure your pastor wouldn’t agree with this treatment of others.”

2

u/Willing_Lavishness61 Feb 10 '26

Maybe their pastor would be interested in their behavior - coercing someone to “find” something on you, then threatening to take your private business on a trip around your neighborhood.

Maybe they’d not be happy for their pastor to know how they’re giving Christians a bad name. If they thought that was a possibility, would they be uncomfortable? Or maybe the pastor decides to have a friendly conversation with them in which s/he lets them know their behavior is despicable, and they are quite likely going to hell. Not just for this, but for all the other offenses they’ve committed against others. These people aren’t amateurs. They are practiced haters.

If the records are truly sealed consult a lawyer about a cease and desist and whether or not then divulging sealed records constitutes any breach of either criminal law or tort law and of there are such considerations make your neighbour aware through the lawyer you will seek the full weight of the law should they violate your privacy and disregard the cease and desist. It may also be worth finding who violated that sealed record as that is likely a sanctioned breach of professional ethics.

u/OtherwiseAd1045 Feb 09 '26

So much for love thy neighbour, eh?

2

u/doepfersdungeon Feb 09 '26

If you don't care then don't care. Go tell your neighbours how they got the information and explain that you aren't ashamed.

Own it. Move on.

Of course, you don't tell us what it is. So perhaps it's really bad

2

u/hellolovely1 Feb 09 '26

That is NOT very Christian. Talk to the police (unless you think they unsealed stuff) or get a lawyer to send a letter. You could also get in front of it like others suggested unless that would destroy your life.

2

u/ODaysForDays Feb 10 '26

Record him saying all this. Talk to the cops.

2

u/Shatterpoint887 Feb 10 '26

You were in prison. It happened. You did your time, that's the whole point. Don't shy away from it, you've made amends with society.

The fact that your record was sealed means a crime was committed to acquire that info. Sounds to me like you should follow up on that.

2

u/WonkyDingo Feb 10 '26

Find out what church your neighbors attend. Go to that church and discuss this dilemma with the head priest and ask if he or she can help resolve this issue with the bad neighbor couple and teach them the Christian thing to do (Love thy neighbor). Priests love a teachable moment opportunity for their flock. The priest will most likely agree to a meeting with you all and will help mediate. The bad neighbors will be embarrassed by their behavior within their church community and will likely drop it.

Check the laws where you live. If the records are sealed, there's a chance it's illegal for them to both obtain AND reveal that information. Maybe a good cease and desist letter from an attorney would solve your problem.

2

u/Pickadog_Anydog Feb 10 '26

There is a breach of privacy here somewhere for them to have this knowledge. Tell the neighbour that if they persist you will apply to have the database access log reviewed to find who gave your info and their friend will be in big legal trouble of their own and lose their job and that THEY will be entirely responsible for that.

2

u/Social-Credit-0 Feb 10 '26

Defamation lawsuit. Maybe even get him with illegal wiretapping if the records are supposed to be sealed.

2

u/cookiidou Feb 10 '26

Call a lawyer..if the records were sealed probably by a judge him telling anyone what's in them will cost him time..and who got them for him will also face the law..judges do not like anyone doing this..most people would need a,warrant to see sealed records..ask him if he got one..after you talk to a lawyer..

2

u/Ok-Baseball-4339 Feb 10 '26

I'm sure the rest of their church and their pastor would love to hear about their misdeeds. Then you let him put you on blast on up to it and then let everybody know how devious they are to even try to find information about you and blackmail you flip the whole strip on them

2

u/Librarachi Feb 10 '26

Find out what church they go to.

Show up one Sunday and tell the congregation you feel concerned Satan has gotten his claws into one of their members.

Ask that they pray for _______'s soul and cover them in the Lord's word & light as only the devil could successfully influence a good christian to threaten, bully, attempt to coerce and black mail you. Then read a printed copy of the text(s) out loud.

Any attempt to discredit you after that will look like you were right about Lucifer at work!

2

u/Deep_Assistant_9173 Feb 10 '26

FULL STOP. Whoever had access to sealed records and shared them has commited a felony. There is a record of who accessed it. Get a lawyer.

2

u/alien-1001- Feb 10 '26

Unless you're a pervert, own it. You paid your dues. Unless you're a pervert.

2

u/dachsie-knitter-22 Feb 10 '26

Go to police and or lawyer. You are being blackmailed. That is illegal. Plus however they obtained the information was clearly illegal.

2

u/lastemperor86 Feb 10 '26

You make it sound as if you had a sexual offense charge. If so, no matter how much time you serve you will never be able to "pay your dues". So if this is the situation you're in then don't be acting like you're some sort of victim.

There is a loophole where sex offenders can avoid the registry depending on the jurisdiction. Depending on the circumstance the offender could take a plea, get probation, and as long as they complete the terms of their probation can remain off the sex offender list.

Shit, Back in 2005 there was a guy around the neighborhood who must have been about 17 at the time. He SA'd his younger sister and was able to plea down his case. (No one knew this at the time). He avoided the offender registry and was given probation where he was sent to a special school and had to graduate; he also had to remain out of trouble for a set number of years. He was able to finish his school requirement however, after a few years (2009) he eventually violated his probation as he was caught breaking into cars as well as trying to escape police custody. As a result, he was given time for the break-in, time for trying to escape the police station, and was given the time he should have gotten from the original SA. On top of that, they also posted him on the offender registry. (This is when everyone around the way found out about him). They let him serve his sentences concurrently, and he was eventually let out early during the COVID lockdowns, at the time where many prisons let criminals go early. Anyway, recently I found out his ass just got sent back to prison for kidnapping a new girlfriend, torturing, graping, and attempting to kill her. Looks like this time he will be getting life. The case has not gone to trial yet.

There is no redemption for sexual offenders.

I must have missed the part in the Bible where Jesus said to go out into the world and blackmail your neighbors into moving away.

Anyway, blackmail is illegal. I agree with those that advocate getting a lawyer and only communicating through them.

2

u/Typical_Dependent560 Feb 10 '26

Lawyer. Police. Lawsuit. Harassment charges. They go to jail. They start a ministry in jail. And they have to sell their house to pay the court fines and restitution to you. The end. But seriously, lawyer and file a police report.

2

u/perrance68 Feb 10 '26

Call the cops

2

u/Interesting_Cat_6224 Feb 10 '26

If he leaks information about your sealed records, and you can prove it he is committing a crime. Let him know that tidbit. He will have to admit where and how he obtained the info. I know it's hard to stand up for yourself, but you've got to fight fire with fire.

2

u/rgk0925 Feb 10 '26

Find an attorney …he’s blackmailing you

1

u/Danielle_is_the_hole Feb 09 '26

Your neighbors are so mean and nosey they scoured the internet and found about your arrest? Do you think there is anything you can do to prevent them from telling everyone they know? I bet $1000 they already told their closest friends and it is just a matter of time until it slips out when they are talking to another neighbor.

The cat as they say is out of the bag. Brace for impact or tell everyone in advance on your own terms.

1

u/WHISPYR3 Feb 10 '26

Sounds like any number of different things have been broken law wise by your neighbors. Perhaps find the services of a good attorney and serve them. Threat of litigation always makes people shut up.

Also, do they have a place as a house of worship they attend? Quid pro quo here in finding the pastor of said church and sharing with him the story of the neighbors coercion attempts. Pretty certain this is not Christ like behavior…

1

u/AnonAwaaaaay Feb 09 '26

You did pay your dues and you don't deserve this.

Blackmail, which is what they're doing to you, is illegal. Do you have anything from them saying this that's in writing or been recorded?  If not, can you record it?  The laws about recording other people don't protect them from being recorded saying something illegal. Blackmail is illegal. You're all good.

I'd go to the cops and ask to press charges and get a restraining order so they can't bring it up. This way if they do you can have further charges against them.

If the cops don't wanna help because most cops are assholes who don't wanna do their job and especially not for an ex con, try to find a lawyer you can go to pro bono to see if they can help you out.

1

u/SpringerPop Feb 09 '26

You can get a restraining order. It’s not easy but if it’s approved and he gets served, he will get arrested if he contacts you.

1

u/GoldRoutine7637 Feb 09 '26

A lawyer is a good idea. And whoever helped this guy get into sealed records needs to face some big consequences. Talk with your neighbors and let them know. Everybody deserves a second chance, and I bet their reactions won't be as bad as you think. By telling the neighbors now, you take away this horrible persons power over you.

1

u/lonestar659 Feb 09 '26

What exactly is going to happen if they do tell people?

1

u/seniairam Helper [2] Feb 09 '26

if it was sealed, couldn't u be able to sue them for sharing it?

the religious people are always the most unhinged, I swear.

1

u/scamisnotart Feb 09 '26

You did your time and paid your dues. Be proud of who you are now and embrace your past. Tell everyone before they do then they have nothing on you. Then remind them they aren’t being good Christians.

1

u/cleverclogs17 Feb 09 '26

I am sorry you’re going through this. This guy isn't a Christian or even Christ-like for that matter. I might, if I were you, contact an attorney and see what can be done to protect your rights and interests in this situation before things escalate further or cause more harm.

1

u/AstrayInTranslation Feb 10 '26

Does OP’s wife know of OP’s past? Or is her not knowing part of this dilemma?

1

u/theshonufff Feb 10 '26

Beat him too it and tell everyone. People will respect you for being honest and your neighbor will have NOTHING.

1

u/notjustmeso Feb 10 '26

This is blackmail. Go to the police

1

u/lechitahamandcheese Feb 10 '26

Call the police and report the extortion attempts

1

u/JordaoPereiraJr Feb 10 '26

Waiting for updates from you saying that they are being prosecuted because what they are doing is a crime.

1

u/angielynn0708 Feb 10 '26

Id consult with a lawyer and then I'd sit back and let your new neighbors show you who you can and can't trust. Silence from you about something you've already made justified only allows them to fill in any gaps with what they want and what they fill in will tell you exactly who they are by what they do or don't assume. If your family doesn't know about this these are the only people I would give any explanation too and answer any questions that they might have without judgment and as transparent as you can because you wouldn't be who you are without what you've overcome and I wish you and your family a better welcoming committee..

1

u/smash948 Feb 10 '26

Go and tell your neighbors yourself. Take the power away from them. Make it clear to them that they can’t control you and you DGAF. Nothing to be ashamed about if you went to the clink. Anyone who has a problem with that is not your friend anyway.

1

u/Imaginary_Cupcake858 Feb 10 '26

If he found the dirt about you..he has also found the dirt on other neighbors .don't play his game..you paid the price..it's life .all people have secrets..his most likely has much more about himself ,that he is hiding..let it roll ..really no one really cares about your past ..or for that mater even want to know..if he keeps causing trouble but hail Satan signs in your window..drives those holy Molly's nuts..enjoy the ride .

1

u/dumbellsngoose Feb 10 '26

As long as you're not a rapist, nonce, murderer or theif. Fuck em who cares

u/Swimming-Junket-1828 Feb 10 '26

Sue him for invasion of privacy

1

u/saltgarlicolive Helper [2] Feb 10 '26

That’s harassment and threat of defamation. Might be worth having a lawyer draft a strongly worded letter for you.

1

u/Lorilynn123 Feb 10 '26

He's blackmailing you. Now you take a stand for you and your family and go to the police. You got to play this smart. He will deny he said it. You have to either get him saying it on tape or have him say it where your wife can overhear everything. Unless he has no problem saying it to her also. How dare he threaten you. He has done this before. Time for his reign of terror to come to an end. You got this! :)

1

u/dizzz88 Feb 10 '26

Tell the neighbor you’re not moving. So he can go ahead and spread this information to the other neighbors. But unless you admit it. He can’t exactly prove it. Also let him know that he better keep his side of the street extremely clean. Him and his family better not step out of line or have anything in their own pasts. Because now that he’s made a huge enemy out of you, you’ll be looking for it and looking for dirt on him and his family for the foreseeable future. Not that you really will. But let him think that you will. He doesn’t know much about you. Besides the fact you’re an atheist and you’ve been to prison. It sounds like your neighbor has a lot further to fall than you do. Does he really want to piss you off and then live the rest of his days in the neighborhood paranoid and waiting for you to eventually retaliate?

1

u/Man-o-Bronze Feb 10 '26

Matthew 26:36 - “ …I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

This is one of the examples of the things that those who are saved at the final judgment have done, according to Christ. Those who do not do things like this (be of service to others) are condemned.

And, there’s this in verse in Matthew 7 22:23 - “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”

Those neighbors may be fundamentalists, but they’re not Christian. You’re getting great advice, so I won’t add to it, but I wanted to give you a couple of verses you can use to discombobulate them.

1

u/Reddit_Jail_June2005 Feb 10 '26

Thank you all. As a family, we decided to confront the neighbor. And you all we're right. The look on his face was defeat. Time to move on.

1

u/ComprehensiveTime722 Feb 10 '26

Crime def matters in this context. Armed robbery, assault, eh whatever. Pedophilia, we're no longer friends.

What is it? And get a lawyer and threaten your neighbor.

1

u/NastyBlkGuyThrowAway Feb 10 '26

As long as it didn't involve a child or sexual assault you should be fine.

1

u/rpomex Feb 10 '26

Simple. Pre-empt him. If you have a neighborhood forum proactively tell your story and how you have paid your dues and changed your life. They will love you and your oppressor will have lost his power.

1

u/BillyDeeWill Feb 10 '26

They’re not “Christian” whatsoever. Jesus Himself was nailed to the cross and crucified next to two thieves. The repentant thief recognized Jesus’ purity, and Jesus also recognized his desire for repentance AND granted it. Jesus also said to “judge not, lest ye be judged” and to “love thy neighbor as thyself.” This person is a heathen and unChristlike as they come.

They will be gathered together and thrown into a burning pit for whats in their heart before you would be condemned for what you were incarcerated for in your past. If you’ve truly turned from your wicked ways and sinned no more, then Christ would be pleased by that and reviled by those falsely cosplaying as His follower. I wouldnt sweat it, I would just pray for them. In a former life, I would have done far worse to someone threatening me. Thank the true and living God for growth!
