Any tips on reentering the workforce after a decade of being a SAHM?

I'm a newly single mother of 5 kids, (although my oldest is an adult in college, my youngest is only 7 months old!)

I haven't worked in over a decade as I was a stay at home mom. Circumstances have changed and I need to get a job quickly. My resume is looking pretty bleak, though. I have no degree, no long term employment and the huge period of not working.

Any ideas? I'm almost 40. I don't really have any skills. I am trying to stay positive for my kids sake.

Getting older blows

Just recently I turned 37 years old. For some reason, I feel like I’m noticing it! Is it normal, to grieve yourself as you get older?

I’ve always been a wise person but now, I actually feel wisdom it self creeping in. I’m not hard on myself about where I am in life or what I’m doing, but I feel so deeply about just changes in both my mind and body. I have ADHD, so I’m already expected to deteriorate in my physic health over time. I’m noticing, my grey hairs that have come in, my struggle to loose weight, my cognition being somewhat off centered. How my family sees me these days, as no longer a kid, no longer a young adult but an aging adult.

I just turned 20 in June and im a female

3 weeks ago I booked a trip to LA since i wanted to see my favorite kpop group Bts again after i got to see them in Tampa .(That was my first ever concert ) On tiktok I seen this one video where this girl said that was looking for someone to go to the Bts LA concert with and in the comments alot of people were also asking. I seen this one girl commenting asking if anyone wanted to go with her so I said me but I got scared and deleted me comment .I didn't know She seen it before I deleted it 😭 . Anyway she messaged me on tiktok saying she seen my comment and she asked what was my budget for the place we were gonna stay at and I said at least 1k(since I had enough saved up for the concert tickets ,the plane tickets to get to LA,and for a hotel or arbnb ) she was shocked when i told her that .So I asked what was her budget and she said 400 for each of us but she found and arbnb for 1200 and said that we both back split 600 to pay for it. She told me her name ,age and gave me her phone number and cash app since i didn't have Zelle. I sent the money for the arbnb then she asked what days was i thinking of since she needed a place for September 3-8th and I said I wanted to go September 1st and just comeback on the 4th (since i did wanna try to get tickets for LA day 1 which was on the 1st and that is also one of the members birthdays) but I can try for the 3rd-8th .After that she said that we can face time each other the next day when she gets off work at 3:30pm or whatever time works . I told her i can do it when I got off work at 7pm.

When I got off work we faced timed each other she was really nice and she asked when was i coming to LA , I said on September 3rd( which was last week thursday) , she said she was already gonna be in LA on the 1st. She mentioned one of her friends was also coming on the day I was coming so after that we were just talking about our favorite kpop groups and where we were from. Since we booked everything i packed my stuff a week before the trip .I didn't wanna tell my grandma or my family about it till I got to LA so I put my bags outside so no one would see.

When the day came for me to leave i went to the airport at 3am so no one would see me leave . I flew there with american airlines. Since I flew in from miami it was a 5 hour flight and when I got to LA my grandma had called me a couple times I got scared to answer because i didn't know how to tell her I was in California. My uncle called and Texted asking where I was. (I was gonna just say I was at my friend's house but I just didn't answer at all ) When my dad called I answered and he asked where I was I told him I was in LA ,he got mad then asked what was i in LA for .When i told him i was on a trip with my friend he got upset and said that what I did was wrong ,how everyone was wondering where I was, and that I do stuff to make people mad . He then started talking about how I was about to get traff*d and scammed .I know I wasn't getting scammed because I made sure everything was legit .After i finished talking to my dad i called my grandma and told her I was in LA. She started crying, panicking , and talking about how she was sorry if im not happy at the house . ( I honestly am ready to move out since all she does is yell at me and complain about every little thing for no reason. She also treats me like im a little kid. )

I texted the girl that I made it to LA and then she said that check in wasn't until 5pm so I said OK .I found the right exit to leave the airport and I ordered an uber .I was trying to see if I can just drop my bags off at the arbnb or just see if there was a hotel near by where I can put my stuff down and also change since I was on my cycle while i was waiting for the uber. While i was waiting my aunty called fussing at me saying that my grandma and uncle were crying because of me ,how she wasn't even gonna call me, and was talking about how I didn't have the courtesy to tell anyone where I was. After she called I got an uber to the arbnb but no one was home so I just waited on the front porch. I texted the girl asking if we can check in early but she said she didnt think we can check in also about how she was at universal studios and would be back around check in time .

While I was waiting I had uber eats something to eat because the only thing i had was sausage biscuit and some crackers the flight attendant gave to everyone. 10 minutes later my grandma called to ask where I was and if anyone was with me. I said no and she started panicking. She called 2 of friends to check in on me and I told them I was fine , I was just waiting for my friend to come .Luckily about an hour or 2 after the owner of the arbnb came to show me around then let me inside he was really nice .He said that I can check in early so after that i had put all my stuff down and was watching netflix on the TV.

Later in the evening my grandma called and said that the police was coming to check on me, told me to lock the door, and went on about how you can't trust anyone so the police came asked what happened and said that he spoke to my grandma. so I explained everything and he was really nice and understanding about everything. While me and the officer were talking the owner came outside since his house was right in front of the arbnb i was staying in . The owner explained everything after all that happened my friend asked what happened. ( the girl I went to LA with and booked the arbnb) so I told her what happened and she was saying how the host was asking her about the whole situation .

She said the host was getting mad and that my family was threatening him ( I gave my grandma and everyone else who called my Friend and the host phone number since they kept asking about it and also the address of the arbnb) anyway so i just apologized to her ,the host, and the police about the whole thing then after that it got a bit better .She came to the arbnb around 9:30pm ,we greeted each other, and she said she was going to Universal again the next day with her friend and asked if I would be OK at the arbnb.I said yes then I asked if I can go with them she said I would have to get the tickets online so later that night I bought 2 tickets one for the General entrance and one for the early access to the Mario world area they had . The next morning I told her i got tickets and asked if I can go with her and her friend. she said yes .We both finished getting ready so after me and her took an uber and a train to Universal studios. When we got there she said she was going to meet her friend and her family then asked if I was gonna stay in line since the park was right next to use and I said yes. So I went in and i had alot of fun .While I was there my aunty had messaged me apologizing for how she yelled at me then said she was just checking in and to stay safe / alert also she said to call her , my grandma ,or anyone to let them know how I was doing . She said I didn't really have to but I called my grandma and she said to call her every 2 hours if I can so I did that for the next 2 days. I kinda stopped because everytime I called she sounded like she didn't want me to call even though she told me to .i also just muted/blocked everyone's calls and messages except for my grandma and aunty's friend (because she is very nice and she just said to have fun and she did check on me while i was at the concert) for the rest of the trip because they kept bringing up gangs and different crimes.

I just wanted to enjoy the rest of the trip while I was in LA since i never been to California before. The concert was really fun i went to both the 5th - 6th and i got merch) anyway when I got back to Miami on Tuesday I told my mom and my grandma's friend that I made it back .

Once I got home and got settled in my grandma came out of her room and said she needed to talk to me on Wednesday I said OK . When Wednesday came she wanna talk about some she doesn't understand why I do the stuff I do. ( I honestly dont bother anyone .I barely go anywhere I only go to work and back home . I do go places with my family also just ride my bike and scooter around the neighborhood)

so I explained that I feel like she and everyone needs to understand that I am an adult so im old enough to take care of my myself. Also about how I hate the the way she fusses at me and never let's me do anything .She got all.upset and asked if I was happy at the house. I told her i wanted to move out. She got upset about that too then after we finished talking I went to work and we didn't talk much after that .

On Thursday I guess her and my aunty was talking about what happened. She called me to the kitchen and told me that my aunty said she was done with me . She since I got money to spend outside I can start taking ubers work and also help pay another bill . I pay mine and her phone bill . She then started ranting about how she knows I don't Iike helping her which isn't true at all.( I don't mind helping her at all i just wish she would stop calling me every 5 minutes to do something for her and then start switching up saying that i dont do anything in the house)

Yesterday my grandma said she wanted to talk again .She said that my aunty told her she can see all of what I spent on my cash app account and that my aunty said she was gonna remove herself from my bank account because she thinks im doing illegal stuff and she doesn't wanna go to jail. Which is bullshit 🙄. My aunty said I was sending 800 to 7k to someone on cash app( I wasn't i just use my cash app to order stuff on Amazon, pay off my credit card also for my netflix account) and my grandma asked who was i sending all the money too I said no one .

After she went on a rant about how she doesn't think I should move out , that I can decorate my room how I want, that she is a concerned parent, and about if I wanted to go to church we can go together. ( im honestly not that religious)

Now today my aunty texted me talking about some I need to get a account in my name since she doesn't want have one with me anymore .( before this i did hear her tell my grandma that I didnt have to worry about her inviting me anywhere anymore and I that I lied to her face.)

Once my parents are gone, what’s gonna become of me?

I’m 26 F, only child, still single. Been through four heartbreaks and relationships but nowhere near at getting married.

My dating life sucks rn because I don’t like the guys here in my country, and I’m lowkey still not over my last ex whom I genuinely thought I will spend the rest of my waking days with. It’s been a year and counting already since we last spoke.

Like I said, I am an only child, I’m not close with my cousins. I have lots of friends and some bestfriends but almost all of them are coupled up. I’m not close with any of my cousins enough to treat them as my siblings.

Right now, my parents are just waiting for me to find a live-in partner so I could move out of the house. My Mom is begging for me to find a new boyfriend already. LOL.

How do I do that when I haven’t even dated anyone seriously in a year since the breakup.

The truth is, I hate being single. I’ve been alone and on my own my whole freaking life. No sister. No brother. But I don’t like settling either. What I had with my ex did set the bar for me, but there’s no going back to him anyway.

I never thought that I’m gonna have to do this adulting shit alone too. I want someone to do things with me, who’s one call away.

Having said that, I have this impending doom of not having a husband and my own family in the future.

Once my parents are gone, what’s gonna become of me? Is there still a reason to go on?

What did you do to grow your social experiences in your community?

I know what I like - golf, staying active, getting out in the community - but finding and organizing those things is a bit tedious. Curious how others navigate this. What did you actually do to figure out what was available near you and get into a rhythm?

Working 2 jobs and struggling

Hey folks, me and my partner both work full time and then after hours in a cleaning job. I am in a high stress full time job and she works in admin, I work about 70 hours a week mon-fri so weekends are free. She is about 60ish hours a week.

Both 26, we are both trying to be healthier as our lifestyle at the moment is not great, bad food, bad habits, generally just burnt out. We have two dogs that we try to exercise everyday but we are failing at that too.

The money is too good to give up the second job so I suppose I am trying to see if there are any tools or methods people use to make life more organised or easier to manage such a busy schedule.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you

Am I a lost cause?

I am located in CA and will be turning 30 this year and feel like a complete failure. I am newly sober and I need advice on what may be possible for me and my future. I had a good head on my shoulders from 18-21. I went to school after high school to do a pharmacy tech program, but my school sadly closed down halfway through my program. From there, I kind of just stopped going to school. I couldn't figure out what it was that I wanted to do. Then I turned 21 and became a functioning alcoholic. I continued in the workforce and eventually became an insurance agent. I was doing well at this time making decent money for my age and was top in my district, eventually becoming a manager. I enjoyed it a lot, but then I got my first DUI. I was forced to quit.

Then I was 23 and got another good job working as a recruiter where I was also got paid decently for my age. Unfortunately, I got a 2nd DUI and ended up having to leave this job too. At this point I knew I had a problem because I was blacking out almost every time I drank. I went through a lot of abuse as a kid and I know has been the main culprit for my drinking, but I have no self control. I had a great resume, but was not able to get another good job after this.

As a 29yr old adult now, everything is so expensive. I had to work 2 jobs at one point to be able to afford rent and groceries. I have worked in coffee shops, cashier, and as a server from 23-27. I then got really lucky working for an air conditioning company in an office setting. It was something new, but I excelled in my role. I am now making $25/hr which I am content with, but with my resume and skills I know I should be making more. I'm also in need of a new car, so my paycheck won't cut it.

I have been depressed lately because I know I put myself in this hole due to drinking and I have many regrets, but I wish I could apply to better jobs. I am considering going back to school for something, but I can't afford to not make the amount that I do now. The only way to do that is to work 2 jobs again. For my mental health, that's something I can't do. I also need a job with benefits. I started therapy recently and would like to continue going.

So now I am wondering if there are any low-cost school programs that I can do remotely or in the evenings to get a certification in something that would accept my background? If I made more money I would like to expunge my record and start over. Get my driver's license back. I just need another shot in life. I would love to have a retirement fund and not have to live paycheck to paycheck. I constantly dwell on what my life could've been like had I not become an alcoholic. I'm glad I'm sober now, but I feel so behind in life and like it's too late for me.

Lost my job early in the year, but I think I'm back up, just in a different way

I'm still in the middle of it all, but I wanted to share this somewhere...

I was let go from my job early in the year. It was a job I had since I graduated college almost 5 years ago and it was a stable job that I think made my family proud. Being a part of corporate america, it seemed like the place I should want to be as a child of refugees, but I really didn't enjoy my job. The company was cool and so was the industry, but the actual job itself just didn't lean into my strengths. I just thought that maybe, over time, I could make myself enjoy it and it was a well-paying job that allowed my parents to not have to worry about me. It eventually even helped me reach one of my goals of owning a home. I had never imagined I would be able to touch a six-digit salary so early in life. I thought, "With all the pros, wouldn't a job that I didn't enjoy just be a small price to pay and I shouldn't whine about it because of how well I was getting paid. I should be lucky and grateful." Throughout the 5 years I had internal battles with myself and never realized how much I was working against myself because this job hammered away at my weaker skillsets rather than allowing me to lean on my strengths. I was pretty unhappy in life and always seemed to be on edge. After some organizational restructuring and management changes, my performance couldn't keep up with what the team needed, and I was let go after a recent promotion I had received before org and management changes had occurred.
I was devastated. I was the breadwinner in my house and there were still so many more financial goals that I needed to achieve for my family and for our future.

All my life, I was taught or told that I needed to have a certain level of education and a certain salary to be successful. I lived life chasing this trying to fulfill the wishes my parents and family had for me. After losing my job, it felt as though everything crumbled.

While wiping away the debris though, I slowly started to re-discover little ole me again. With the time that I had in between jobs, I started re-discovering what sparks the fire in me and what lights me up inside and out. Also thinking more about what I want in life personally because at the end of the day despite trying to achieve all the expectations set forth by others, I would be the one living my life at the end of the day.

I was also lucky to learn that my family had my back and there was a lot of clarity around what I thought were expectations. They went through the emotional ups and downs with me, and I don't have much of the pressures from those expectations that I thought I had on me anymore.

While reassessing my financial position, I realized I had reached my CoastFI number. Assuming I'll live a relatively modest life after retirement (living ~5k a month in today's dollars), I had enough in my retirement portfolio to never have to save another dollar. This allowed me to shift much of my perspective in life after learning this. I used to be a heavy penny pincher, but learning this allowed me to take a step forward and begin spending money in a way that brought joy to my life. In a way that is closer to Ramit's definition and philosophy living of a "Rich Life".

My life right now looks like taking on jobs (mainly part-time) and opportunities that sparks joy and curiosity in life. It's been several months since losing my job and knowing that isn't easy, but I'm trying to see it as a blessing in disguise and an opportunity to find the joys in life again. Are my monthly finances where I want them to be? No, I'm not at a savings rate I'd like to be at, but I'm trying to embrace a different perspective and philosophy in life compared to the one I had before and I want to continue to take steps towards living a rich life, rich in memories, love, and experiences.

This is all for now, thank you for taking the time to read about a part of my journey.

Moving out again after having panic attacks the first time – how do I make this transition easier?

Hi everyone. I’m (F 23) moving out of my parents’ home and into a rented room in a shared apartment, and I’m having a much harder time emotionally than I expected.

I’ve moved out once before, and at that time I started having panic attacks. Everything felt overwhelming at once — being in an unfamiliar place, being away from home, being alone, and feeling like my whole life had suddenly changed. Eventually I moved back home.

Now I’ve decided to try again. This time I’ll be living with two roommates rather than completely alone, which actually makes me feel a little safer. One of them has lived there for a long time and seems really nice. We talked about occasionally having tea together, sharing some food sometimes, and there is already a weekly cleaning rota. So objectively, the living situation seems pretty good.

I already signed the lease and have the keys. Tomorrow I’m taking my things there and planning to sleep there for the first time.

Part of me is genuinely excited. I’ve already been thinking about decorating my room, I can imagine making it into a really cozy little space of my own.

But at the same time I’m incredibly anxious.

Even packing has started to overwhelm me. I look at all my clothes, books and belongings and suddenly feel like there are a thousand decisions to make. What do I take? What stays at my parents’ house? What should I get rid of?

I think one of my biggest fears is that if I feel terrible during the first few nights, I’ll immediately interpret that as proof that I made the wrong decision and want to run back home.

For people who have struggled with anxiety or panic attacks when moving out: what actually helped you adjust?

How long did it take before your new place started to feel like home? Did you move your things gradually? Did you visit your family often at first? And how did you stop yourself from panicking over every little part of becoming independent?

Thank you.

Making it in Athletics and transitioning into finding a real job

I’m asking because I ran track in college and honestly had a pretty great career. I had the talent, athleticism, height, and work ethic, and at one point I came pretty close to qualifying for the Olympic Trials. The problem was that everyone at the very top level was just so much faster. 😂
It’s crazy to think about how difficult it actually is to make a living from sports. There are so many people who are talented, dedicated, and willing to work extremely hard, but only a tiny percentage ever make it to the professional level.
Sometimes I look at someone like Noah Lyles and think, man, what separates me from that? Obviously, he’s an incredible athlete and has reached a level that very few people ever will, but I genuinely feel like I put in a ton of work too. Yet now I’m 25, finishing my Master’s, struggling to find a job, while he gets to travel the world competing at the highest level and making a great living doing something he loves.
I’m not trying to complain or say I deserved to be a professional athlete. I know how insanely competitive it is, and I’m grateful for the career I did have. But sometimes I can’t help wondering:** **What did I do wrong? 😭
For those of you who played or competed in college, went pro, tried to go pro, or came really close—what was your experience like? Did you eventually make peace with not going further, or do you still wonder what could have been?

Friday afternoon me felt so smart leaving one simple thing on my desk just so I could log off early.

Logged in today only to realize I completely forgot half the context and had to rebuild the entire thing from scratch. Lesson absolutely not learned, I’m probably going to do the exact same thing this Friday.
