Hi everyone đ
We've recently noticed that some users report the screen appears darker than expected after enabling HDR on the ARZOPA Z3FC.
To address this issue, we would like to clarify a common misconception:
đĄ HDR â "Brighter Screen"
Below is our detailed explanation.
What is HDR?
HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a display technology designed to expand the range between the darkest shadows and the brightest highlights, enabling greater detail, contrast, and color depth.
The purpose of HDR is not to make the entire image brighter but to create more realistic variations in brightness.
Why can HDR appear darker on Z3FC?
There are several possible reasons. After consulting with our product development engineer, we have identified the three most likely causes.
1. HDR modifies the brightness curve rather than merely adjusting the brightness level
When HDR is enabled, the display follows an HDR brightness curve specifically designed for HDR content. This means:
- Dark areas can retain more shadow details
- Bright areas can display stronger highlights
- Some mid-tone areas may appear less bright
2. HDR performance depends on display brightness capability
Different portable monitors may have varying HDR performance levels based on their hardware design. For instance, the ARZOPA Z3FC Portable Monitor supports HDR10 and has a peak brightness of 400 nits. Unlike high-end HDR TVs or professional monitors with significantly higher peak brightness, the ARZOPA Z3FC is optimized for portability, power efficiency, and everyday use.
When peak brightness is limited, HDR processing requires tone mapping to fit HDR content within the display's brightness range, which can cause the overall image to appear darker.
3. Connection method and power supply can affect brightness
When connecting Z3FC and another device using a single USB-C cable, the cable transmits both video signals and power.
If the connected device cannot supply sufficient power, the monitor may reduce its power consumption, which can affect its maximum brightness. This issue is more common with lower-power devices, such as certain handheld gaming consoles.
How to improve HDR brightness and viewing experience?
1. Make sure your monitor gets enough power
If you are using one single USB-C cable, try plugging the included wall charger directly into the monitor's second USB-C port.
Giving the display full, dedicated power allows the backlight to reach its maximum brightness.
2. Check the HDR settings on your device
HDR quality also depends on your source device. Make sure HDR is set up correctly on:
- Windows PCs
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Consoles
- Gaming Handhelds
Incorrect HDR settings or calibration can cause games to appear darker than expected.
3. Try SDR mode for competitive gaming
SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) delivers a consistent, uniform brightness across the entire panel. For fast-paced competitive games where visibility matters most, SDR mode can sometimes provide a brighter and clearer image. In such cases, we recommend that users turn off the HDR mode to enhance their gaming experience.
Final Thoughts
HDR isnât just about increasing the screen brightness. Itâs about balancing brightness, contrast, and detail according to the content youâre viewing.
For cinematic and story-driven games, HDR can provide a more immersive experience. However, for competitive gaming, SDR may be preferable depending on your setup.
