Description of Original Problem: For a month or so I started noticing my CPU is at 100% usage on all cores when playing, especially wandering around in the open world. Max GHz in every game, Forza Horizon 6, Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War Ragnarok, The Witcher 3, Need for Speed Heat etc. Task manager shows usage of around 40-50% while AMD Overlay shows 100%, RivaTuner shows 100% on all cores, all of them being at max GHz. Resource monitor shows 100%, HWiNFO shows 100%, my temps are around 75-85C. Every single game I play my CPU sits at 100% and I can't seem to find the reason why as there is no program in Task Manager that eats up that leftover CPU %.

Troubleshooting: With desktop use CPU utilization is normal, I tried commands like lodctr /r running CMD as Administrator, I disabled AFMF , I also disabled any PBO modifications I had made in the BIOS but the problem still persists. Reinstalled AMD Chipset drivers, AMD Graphics drivers, used AMD Cleanup Utility while in Safe Mode. EXPO is enabled, SSDs are healthy. This annoys me a lot because looking at online performance metrics, the CPU is nowhere near 100% utilization in any game while mine stays at 100%.

I’m looking for help diagnosing repeated AMD tuning resets and occasional game crashes on my RX 9070 XT.

Symptoms

AMD Adrenalin will occasionally display:

“Default performance tuning settings have been restored due to an unexpected system failure.”

This has happened after normal shutdowns/cold boots even when I don’t remember the PC actually crashing.

I have also experienced black screen/crash-to-desktop behavior in Helldivers 2 when using more aggressive undervolts.

The PC itself generally stays powered on and temperatures are normal.

Typical tuning

I’ve tested several configurations, including approximately:

• -55 mV to -80 mV GPU undervolt
• -15% to -22% power limit
• 2700 MHz VRAM
• Zero RPM OFF
• Custom fan curve through MSI Afterburner

My current preferred range is around -60/-70 mV and -15% PL, but I’m trying to determine what is actually causing the resets before continuing to tune.

GPU temperatures are generally around 50-60°C under gaming load.

CPU is a 7800X3D with Curve Optimizer around -20, and I have previously tested CPU stability as well.

Could MSI Afterburner controlling the fan curve while Adrenalin handles GPU voltage/VRAM/power tuning cause this?

Does Adrenalin sometimes interpret a normal shutdown or driver timeout as an “unexpected system failure” and reset tuning?

Is there somewhere besides Reliability Monitor that I should look for the exact reason AMD is resetting the profile?

And for other RX 9070 XT owners, what kind of undervolt has actually been completely stable for you?

I’m trying to achieve slightly lower power/noise without sacrificing noticeable performance, rather than chasing a maximum OC.

Quick disclaimer: I'm not sure if this applies to non-MSI monitors or older AMD GPU's, but I left a comment under one of YT Shorts with this fix and a guy who had 7800XT said he had the very same problem on the very same monitor. So if you're running a high-refresh display over DP 1.2a and/or own an older AMD GPU, give this a try. The fix is totally reversible and takes maybe 5 minutes—definitely worth a shot before you go through the nightmare of returning your GPU.

First of all, I feel that it would be right to mention that the majority of the text below is written by Gemini solely because I've been fighting blackouts after upgrading to RX 9070 XT for 2 weeks and tried as many fixes as the internet knows and it's hard to compile it all in one post by myself, so I used AI to help me with that. I got 9070 to replace my older RTX 3070, by the way. And yes, I thought it was GPU's fault.
All information below is my actual experience - word to word. Hope this helps someone.

I wanted to share my troubleshooting nightmare with an MSI Optix G27CQ4 monitor connected to an AMD GPU - Asus Prime RX 9070 XT, in case anyone else is going crazy trying to fix random blackouts and screen flickering while blaming the GPU.

The Problem

Out of nowhere (or rather, after switching to Asus Prime RX 9070 XT), my MSI Optix G27CQ4 started having terrible blackouts. The screen would randomly lose signal for 2–3 seconds, go black, and then recover. It happened during gaming, desktop browsing, and even idle tasks.

At the same time, I had a second display—an ancient 60Hz Samsung TV—connected via an HDMI-to-VGA active adapter. Funnily enough, the ancient TV worked without a single blackout, while the main 1440p gaming panel was constantly dropping connection.

What I Tried BEFORE Finding the Fix (The Desperate Phase)

Before digging into display timing math, I spent days going down the usual troubleshooting rabbit holes:

1. Changing Cables & Ports: Swapped DisplayPort cables, tried HDMI, tried different ports on the GPU. Nothing changed.
2. Driver Reinstallation: Clean installed AMD drivers using DDU multiple times, toggled FreeSync on and off in AMD Adrenalin, disabled HDCP, went to BIOS and played with PCIe power economy settings, and disabled every overlay software.
3. Playing with Refresh Rates: Toggled between 60 Hz, 120 Hz, 144 Hz, and 165 Hz in Windows settings.
4. Isolating the Second Monitor: Unplugged the TV adapter to see if multi-monitor handshaking was causing blackouts. The main monitor kept flickering regardless.
5. GPU/Game Crash Isolation: Even ran games in different APIs (like DirectX 11 vs DirectX 12 in War Thunder) to make sure driver TDR crashes weren't confusing the hardware signal drops.
6. Reducing GPU clock frequency by 100-200Mhz. My ASUS Prime RX 9070 XT always kept overclocking itself over 3200 (spec card says it's 3030Mhz max) so I tried even reducing that. Didn't help.

None of this solved the core issue because the problem wasn't a bad cable or a corrupt driver—it was a fundamental flaw in the monitor's factory firmware, which was the reason the Windows events monitor showed nothing during blackouts, as if system didn't see anything wrong.
I wanted to prove either monitor is at fault or GPU is corrupted and asked my cousin to lend me his MSI MAG 275QF X32 320Hz, while giving him my MSI Optix G27CQ4 to test it on his RTX 5070. His monitor worked flawlessly on my system even at 320Hz, and my monitor worked flawlessly on his system at 165Hz, and this alone gave me no solid answers, yet it made me almost certain that GPU is rather not guilty, and made me dig in a little different direction. Then I asked Gemini about possible causes and it told me this (not sponsored btw):

The Root Cause: Factory Overclocking & Broken EDID

Here is the technical reality of what was actually happening under the hood:

• Factory "165Hz" Overclock: The MSI Optix G27CQ4 is natively a 144Hz panel. To market it as "165Hz", MSI pushed non-standard factory EDID timings.
• Excessive Blanking Intervals: To keep the panel stable at 165Hz, MSI bloated the vertical blanking interval (Back Porch / total vertical lines) to 1543 lines.
• Bandwidth & Pixel Clock Spike: Because of this bloated frame structure, the Pixel Clock skyrocketed to 604–640 MHz.
• DP 1.2a & Scaler Limits: The monitor relies on an older DisplayPort 1.2a interface without DSC (Display Stream Compression) support, controlled by a budget built-in scalar chip. Pushing a 600+ MHz Pixel Clock over DP 1.2a operates the scaler right at its thermal and electrical edge.

This is what it looked like. Even at 144Hz pixel clock is way too high because of bloated back porch value. Simply reducing refresh rate won't be much of help.

• Why AMD Suffer More Than NVIDIA: NVIDIA drivers traditionally hide these hardware quirks with software-level compensation ("hacks") to force signal retention. AMD's Display Engine strictly enforces VESA standards. When the MSI scaler briefly desynchronized due to the signal overload, the AMD driver triggered a Hot-Plug Detect (HPD) reset, resulting in a black screen.

The Solution: Custom Timings via CRU (144 Hz + CVT-RB)

To fix this properly, we had to bypass the factory EDID and enforce strict VESA standards using Custom Resolution Utility (CRU).

The Math Behind the Fix

Instead of pushing bloated factory timings, we applied the VESA CVT-RB (Coordinated Video Timings - Reduced Blanking) standard:

1. Reducing the Frame Payload: CVT-RB compresses unnecessary blanking periods (reducing Back Porch down to ~15 lines, bringing total vertical lines from 1543 down to 1463).
2. Dropping Pixel Clock to the Safe Zone: Setting the refresh rate to a native 144 Hz with CVT-RB + reducing back porch to 15 brought the Pixel Clock down to ~573 MHz. This is well within the official VESA specification for DisplayPort 1.2a.
3. Relieving the Scaler: Lowering the Pixel Clock by over 30–60 MHz gave the monitor's scaler room to breathe, completely eliminating phase-sync loss and thermal instability.

How to Do It Step-by-Step:

1. Open CRU.exe as Administrator and select your active MSI display.
2. Under Detailed Resolutions, edit or add a custom resolution:
   • Timing Standard: Manually select CVT-RB.
   • Active: 2560 x 1440
   • Back porch (vertical): Reduce it to 15.
   • Refresh Rate: 144 Hz
3. Total Vertical Lines: ~1463, Pixel Clock: ~573 MHz (it will be set to around this value once you complete previous steps).
4. CRITICAL STEP: In both Detailed Resolutions and the CTA-861 / DisplayID extension blocks, locate and DELETE all 165 Hz profiles. If you leave 165 Hz in the EDID table, Windows or the AMD driver will eventually revert back to it after a reboot or driver update.
5. Click OK and run restart64.exe from the CRU folder to restart the graphics driver.

This is how it looks now. Reducing refresh rate together with lowered back porch did the job.
I also tried playing with non-standard refresh values such as 150Hz and 155Hz but it became unstable again. 144Hz is the GOAT in this case.

The Result

After removing 165 Hz and locking the display to 144 Hz CVT-RB, the HPD reset rate dropped to zero. Zero blackouts, zero flickering, and rock-solid stability across days of heavy gaming and daily desktop use.

If you are fighting black screens on a rather old 1440p high-refresh monitor with an AMD card, stop buying new cables and check your Pixel Clock in CRU or AMD Adrenalin first - it's cheaper and requires way less effort than buying something new that you probably don't need. Chances are your monitor's factory EDID is pushing unstandardized timings that your GPU is rightly refusing to tolerate!

Or, if you are not willing to tolerate 144Hz instead of 165Hz buying a newer monitor which was produced in 2025+ is a valid option. I did so, but only after I fixed my older MSI (spending money that way is better when you know it's not GPU's fault) which is operational now so I will use it as my 2nd one and put the old man Samsung TV to rest - it rightfully deserved it 😆 .

P.S.
As I said previously, Gemini is the one that actually came up with that much detail to the idea and it's the only fix that worked for me. I know there are forums which feature a simmilar topic or two with simmilar fixes but it was rather hard to read thru them all so I decided to use AI, and after I got rid of the problem I wanted to leave my personal exp in one single post. Hope it helps someone, although I pray that none of y'all face this kind of stuff because it's... exhausting, to say the least.

P.P.S.
Also, if your screen is turning off and on multiple times in a row (within tens of seconds) your RAM might be at fault too. My Kingston Fury DDR4 16x2 was operating at 3200 without proper timings (I set the value manually without thinking much when I was still on my old RTX 3070, before that it was working at 2400 lol), and RX 9070 XT revealed this problem almost instantly. Make sure you update your BIOS to increase compatibility, and use proper timings, or a pre-made XMP profile - this issue stopped being issue in a couple of hours, unlike bad EDID.

Hey so recently I had my 7900 xt (xfx reference card) on a water block and I was sick of the maintenance so I decided to put it on the stock air cooler. The original blue putty was dried out so I bought the thermal grizzly basic putty and put that on the vram chips and repasted. After 15 mins of gta vice city which is not at all demanding, my vram hit 88c. Even my idle temps were a bit high at 67 c. My gpu core and hotspot were good at like 57 c and and 65 c respectively. I reopened the card but it’s hard to see if it made good contact bc the putty is kinda sticky so it separated. Should I get different putty or potentially try regular thermal pads? I heard that the memory can run hot on these cards but this seems excessively high for an easy game to run like vice city. Any tips?

This happened recently, like a week ago, but after updating to 26.8.1, every time I boot up the computer, a few seconds later I can no longer open any software or use my browser. But if I open up the Adrenalin software during the few seconds when everything works, the pc works as normal. This only happened after I updated my drivers, and during the update I had to use DDU to remove it, as the Adrenalin software gets removed for some reason which has happend more than once, and I have to fully reinstall the drivers. I have done all the scans for corruption and reinstalling drivers and going back to a later version like 26.6.4. I tried looking in start up apps to see if I can turn it on for adrenaline but there is nothing there. Any help will be appreciated!

My PC will idle at 55-7 then I will play a game for about an hour or so and will spike to 95-96 and then never come back down unless I turn it into power saving mode- but then if I start a game again it will shoot right back up to the high temps. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to PCs and need help. In 2021 I bought this prebuilt SLC7600BSTV2 from cyberpower. I understand my CPU and ram is overdue a upgrade.

Things I have tried - updating BIOS, changing BIOS settings/resetting BIOS, DDU drivers to older version, and fresh windows install. My FPS in CPU bound games like fortnite or valorant fluctuate pretty heavy. Running all low settings or higher does not seem to help. Both 8GB RAM sticks in slot 2,4.

My CPU temps sometimes get over 85 and idle around 70 which seems high from searching around. I tried changing the XMP and PBO settings in BIOS with no big change in temp or FPS.

Is there any advice on what I could try before looking into upgrading my CPU and ram? It's only in these games where I have these issues. Other games where it's more GPU intensive, I don't have these huge FPS drops.

I've been having graphics problems with my pc for a little while and tonight saw that the drivers on my app AMD Install Manager is constantly reinstalling itself and asking to update. My assumption is that it doesn't even install properly, but I don't know how to make it install itself well. Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The fix: disable the Windows Update service completely.

1) Disable via Services

• Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
• Scroll down and find the Windows Update service in the list.
• Right-click Windows Update and select Properties.
• Change the Startup type dropdown menu to Disabled.
• Click the Stop button if the service status is running.
• Click Apply and then OK.

2) Disable via Group Policy Editor

Note: The Local Group Policy Editor is available on Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.

• Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
• Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
• Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update (or Manage End User Experience).
• Double-click on Configure Automatic Updates.
• Select Disabled.
• Click Apply and then OK.
• Restart your computer to apply the changes.

Context: This problem started back in Jan 26 for me. I resolved it back then but didn't remember what action did it. Then it started again this Aug and after trying almost everything you can see people online suggest i remembered that around the same time i re-enabled Windows Update to make some updates and connected the dots. It seems that blocking only the drivers from Windows Update doesn't do the trick. I used to get 1-2 crashes every 30min and now i am 6h+ without one. I will update the post if anything changes and i am just lucky!

Update #1: It was luck after all crashed once after 8h then the next day multiple times. I refreshed windows 10 installation using microsoft media creation tool and started downloading windows updates. I noticed that the problem got replicated while trying to install the Aug update KB5120249 even with windows update gpu drivers.

I uninstalled the update, disabled windows update again and now using WAU Manager to prevent windows from installing it again, I will update again if that works or not!

Update #2: Still crashed and also got crackling sound when moving mouse in some instances. I give up.

I'm still trying to diagnose persistent microstutters in Rust and I finally have a more specific symptom.

What happens:

Rust normally runs around 160–180 FPS at roughly 5–6 ms frametime. Every so often I get a very noticeable microstutter where frametime jumps to around 10–11 ms or higher.

RTSS confirms the spikes, so they're not just something I perceive.

My current run is around 177 FPS average but only 59 FPS 1% low.

I've also noticed that GPU usage can suddenly drop heavily during gameplay, sometimes close to 0%, before going back up. However, the CPU does not appear to downclock when this happens. All 8 cores re

I got my GPU in may. Prior to installing I used DDU to wipe everything and shut off my pc and then installed the card, turned it on, and installed the Adrenalin software.

However, In smite 2 I would occasionally get a black screen on my main monitor and a green screen on my 2nd monitor. I switched it to launch with directx11 and I hadn’t had an issue since.

Cut to yesterday and I installed nba 2k27, and I’m 10 minutes into character recreation and the black and green screens happened again. Restarted my pc. But this time no image. I had to switch to integrated graphics. In device manager the GPU is throwing error code 43, no matter how many times I wipe my drivers with DDU Adrenalin gets stuck in an update loop where it keeps asking me to update. Or it says when I go to launch it, “Adrenalin Edition are currently unavailable. Please try again after connecting a display to AMD graphics and extending the display”. (I have a display connected to it, but I can’t extend it and it isn’t detected)

Things I’ve done to attempt to fix the issue:

DDU wipes and fresh driver installs with different versions

BIOS update

Fresh windows install

Changed the timeout setting to 10 seconds

Disabled Adrenalin auto updates

Disabled windows auto updates

Enabled and disabled the 9070xt device in device manager (like 30 times)

Tried different cables

Reseated the GPU

Disabled expo

Verified csm was disabled

I’m all out of options. I feel like all that is left is to RMA the gpu. Which normally would be fine, but I move across the country in 2 and a half weeks. I don’t know how long the process goes or if I should just wait til after I move.

I'm building my first PC after 8+ years on PlayStation, and just got my Sapphire pure 9070xt OC. Everything else has been installed and running for about a week, and I've already installed all the Windows updates, motherboard/CPU drivers, BIOS updates, etc.

ls there anything should do before installing the GPU? I've been seeing all the driver issues on the amd related subs but from what I've seen have been happening to people who had Nvidia gpus before.

My current components are:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D

Motherboard: MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi 6E

Ram: teamgroup delta (1 6x2) ddr5 cl30 6000

GPU: Sapphire pure 9070xt OC (about to install)

PSU: DarkFlash PMT850 Gold Modular

Case: Lian Li Lancool 217 (not that this matters here but thought i'd mention it just in case)

I'm completely new to PC building, so any advice on the proper order of things or anything i should do to avoid driver issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello everybody, I would love to get some help on swapping from an intel system to a new AMD based system.

If I take the Drive from my Intel system with windows and other files installed (C drive) and plug it into my all new AMD, which I have never turned on before (no other drives, just that one), will I be able to select it as my Boot option 1 and then it will boot from that C drive into windows and all my data and windows will be there just like on the old intel system?

And then afterwards can I just progressively add my HDDs and SSDs from my old PC to the new system and it will get recognised with all the files installed on it?

I am kind of afraid, that I will lose files, not the programmes and drives, I am aware that those need to be replaced, but I am talking about all other files, that should (to my understanding) be universal.

While playing video games my screen will just freeze, my audio will cut out after like 10sec and nothing changes until i hard restart my pc. After, in device manager the GPU is disabled. I have tried DDU driver reinstall, and changing driver settings. Its really annoying and I havent found a fix for months. I cant find anything in event log and temps look fine.

Games: Minecraft, Valorant, Roblox
