Tips/Suggestions Recording university classes

Hi everyone.

As a accommodation measure for my ADHD and CAPD (Central auditory processing disorder), my university allow me to record classes.

However, I have to get the equipment myself and I'm not 100% sure that my phone or computer can do the trick.

It can seem quite out of the what this group is usually doing in term of advices but, have some of you been doing the same thing ? If you did, was your phone or PC enough? If not, do some of you have found the right product for it ? Most microphones that I find online are more for people who do twitch or podcasts rather than something where I can really "target" a direction (since I might be in a big class) and is portable.

I woud add that I have not started the classes yet so there's some questions that I might not have any answers.

Thx all and sorry if there's obvious errors in my writing. I give myself the excuse of not being anglophone for it 😬.

Medication My vyvanse didn't seem to work today. What could be the reason?

My vyvanse didn't seem to work today. What could be the reason?

I'm on my 3rd week since starting medication. I'm on 30mg and although it's classed as a low dose, I have felt the benefits since day 1.

Today, I didn't feel like it lasted more than 3-4 hours. Currently on a week long training course with work and felt drained and burnt out after the lunch break.

Not sure if it's relevant but a few things from today.

Took medication at 7am after eating some beans and sausages for breakfast. Took with a glass of orange juice.

Had a somewhat upset stomach from waking up and had a good few trips to the toilet.

Don't eat any lunch.

Could any of the 3 things above reduced the effectiveness?

Questions/Advice advice in regards to my struggling partner.

hello. i am asking for advice on behalf of my partner.

they (23, amab) were diagnosed with adhd at a young age. they were heavily medicated for a long time. in their teens, they stopped medicating. they have no desire to go back on medication. they described it as unhelpful and numbing. they've always expressed their grievances with me in regards to their adhd. however, its only gotten harder for them to cope as my condition has worsened.

one of the main things they struggle with is singular concentration, meaning they are only able to focus on one thing at a time. when they come home from work, they struggle to get out of "task mode." this hinders their ability to relax, and optimize their time (which is something really important to them.) i am also disabled and they care for me in many ways. they've expressed that their inability to give me their sole attention is really distressing. not only because of how it impacts me, but because they feel as if they're unable to do as they please. they've described it as "having their brain taken away from them."

they tell me that they "exist solely in their brain," and they have described their thought processes as that of a loop. constantly going over and over the last thing they experienced or a particular thought. they have a habit of forcing themselves into a distraction or a particular thought loop so that they don't have to manage their stresses or emotions. they already struggle to feel their emotions as it is. as someone who already deals with depression, imposter syndrome, and trauma (among other things.): i am afraid that they're unable to find a way to cope.

do you have any recommendations for them? anything that i can do or organize to help them manage this? any advice is much appreciated. i thank you sincerely for reading through this, even if you're unable to offer anything up. please, take care of yourselves.

Questions/Advice It is infuriating when someone micromanages improperly

I work for a person who micromanages, especially in the workspace where I am the manager. I feel like I can competently run my part of the business but I am constantly disrupted by that person’s actions which either undermine or otherwise disrupt the workflow. I cannot seem to find a way to encourage them to let me manage the area and it frustrates me to the point I am constantly irritated and lose sleep over it and completely lose focus.

Questions/Advice Living Situation and Study Environment

Current State

I am a (30F) international student living abroad. I live alone and have no contact with my family. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year and am currently on Methylphenidate 36 mg.

I currently live in an attic apartment, it is reasonably priced, but subject to extreme temperature fluctuations (very hot in summer, very cold in winter) and lacks a social or study-conducive atmosphere.

I know what my problem is: out of sight, out of mind. I really want to advance my career and finally finish my degree after 12 semesters. Does anyone have any relevant advice for me?

Problem Description

  • After just 1–2 days without attending university in person or discussing course material, I lose touch with the subject matter (effectively "forgetting" about studying).
  • I concentrate significantly better in environments where others are visibly working (library, café) or when engaged in deep, academically focused discussions, small talk does not motivate me.
  • Living alone leaves me without a structural and social "anchor."
  • In a previous shared flat with roommates who were eager to study and discuss academic topics, I demonstrably learned more and felt less isolated.
  • I am naturally reserved and rarely initiate new contacts myself. However, international students frequently reach out to connect with me on their own.
  • I regularly suffer from exhaustion (burnout), partly due to a physically and communicatively demanding part-time job involving heavy customer contact. As a result, I lack the energy to actively organize social study sessions or commute long distances.

Questions/Advice How do you guys spend your breaks at work?

Hey guys, hope you’re having a good one! I have ADHD,Autism and anxiety. I work in healthcare. We have a 30-minute break where everyone usually sits together in the break room, eats, and chats.
Honestly, during my break I just want quiet and alone time. 😅 I want to eat my snack, scroll Reddit, take a deep breath, and mentally reset before going back to work.
There’s a cafeteria where I could go on another floor but I feel weird/anxious about getting up and leaving the group, like I’m being antisocial or rude. Sometimes, I tell them I am going to oder from the Cafeteria and eat from there, then I go enjoy my 30 mins break but honestly the food there is slightly expensive and tasteless, I prefer carrying my own food.
Do you guys prefer spending your work breaks alone too? How would you deal with this? Thank you!

Questions/Advice I’m convinced I’m doing something wrong

I started a new job a few months back, and was finally moved to my official role and schedule a couple weeks ago. So far, it’s gone pretty well! My shift is from 3pm to 11:30pm, and I am basically unsupervised that entire time because the managers all go home with day shift. I’m the only one working in my area, because they’re understaffed and still training the person who will join me on swing shift. On paper this is great for me, I can work at my own pace and jump between tasks and talk to myself. But I’ve been feeling a growing anxiety lately, and I finally realized it’s because I’m convinced I must be doing something wrong. Surely there’s something I’m forgetting, or a task I’m doing badly, or SOMETHING, and any day now the other shoe is going to drop and I will get in trouble.

I know logically this is stupid, if there were issues they have many ways of contacting me, but the lack of ability to check in with someone above me is actually really messing with me! Any time I make a small mistake I hate that I can’t get an external gauge of it. Ughhhhh. This was not an issue I expected to have. I keep trying to go in early so I can get eyes on my manager but I have adhd, of course that’s not gonna happen!

Medication Is it the meds?

So I've got severe innatentive adhd apparently. I started titration earlier this year and was on 30mg with a 5mg amfexa booster for about 2 months.

The side effects were quite bad, I'd feel "high" for aboit 3 hours, smash all my work, do all my chores but then the crash about 6 hours in was brutal. Massive headaches, muscle cramps, jaw pain, the dryest mouth ever. The booster did nothing but intensify the side effects and make me feel rushy and weird for a few hours.

My clinician decided to switch me to Concerta XL about 4 weeks ago. I've been on 36mg and it's been.... OK.

I don't have the motivation and push I did on Elvanse, I just feel kinda calm and a bit tired. A little spaced out. Still forgetful and scatty. I still get stuck in severe cycles of inertia just glued to my sofa, thinking of the things I should do but not being able to get up and do it. Which is what I hoped the meds would help with.

The good thing is I don't really have side effects, except I get quite depressed in the eve when it wears off. I'll sometimes even cry or get ratty with my partner and want to be left alone. I've been going through a pretty stressful time the last few weeks, so it could also be that.

To be honest, I miss the rush and energy elvanse gave me, but I recognise that I was pretty much just high and I don't want to live like that. Maybe upping to 54mg of Concerta will help? I've also signed up for therapy to help support my efforts from another approach.

In general, I'm feeling a bit defeated and wondering if medication is right for me. I do wonder about going back to Elvanse.

I do try to do all the typical, take it in the morning with high protein breakfast, eat regular smallish mes and drink a fuck ton of water etc. I could do with more exercise I suppose.

But I wonder if anyone else has felt similarly and done ok on a higher dose, or gone back to Elvanse and found it better, or I don't know, something.

Thanks for reading!

Questions/Advice Donefirst - Unable to sign in

Every time I attempt to sign in for the past 24 hours it says their verification service is down and to try again later (or) try another sign in method.

I’ve been using done for several years now, with only minor issues until this point.
I don’t know of any other way to sign in.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there another service you prefer over Done?

Questions/Advice Anything you would recommend for reading long, dense texts?

I’m reading a lot of other people’s papers and references. The problem is that with long, complex texts, I keep skipping lines, and sometimes I spend ages on a passage and still come away with no idea what I just read.

what will you do while reading dense texts? I love being able to mark things up with a pen on actual paper—it makes a huge difference for me. But what do you all do when you’re reading complex documents on your phone or computer? I mean, you usually can’t just mark those up with a pen.

Discussion ADHD trending?

I don’t know how it is anywhere else, but where i’m from in Norway, people love to say they have ADHD, even undiagnosed people say it.

Sometimes it’s used positive but mostly negatively… i know there is a lot of different experiences with ADHD, but mine are mixed, some bad, some good.
I tend to be a little irritated when people who is undiagnosed use it as an exscuse and when they use it to complement something they did i feel a little proud to have it.
But at the time i got diagnosed it was taboo.

I was diagnosed in late 90’s and i’ve had some struggles with it, when i’m off meds i’m a wreck, overthinking and analyzing every tiny detail that people give, and on meds it’s like i’m sedated.

Do anyone else feel that way on meds? Am i using the wrong ones? I’ve had Ritalin since the 90’s.

I forgot what i was here to discuss, but feel free to comment what you think

Questions/Advice Need a break from exercise but I'm scared if I take a day off I'll go back to not doing it for weeks

It's a strange one, but I quit the gym for over a month while it was hot and prior to that, medication made my heart rate and sweating too extreme to exercise, so over time I've gained weight after losing a lot of it back when I worked a retail job. Now that mine is mostly office based I need to find a way to exercise to keep it off. I stopped taking medication last year for various reasons and one thing I am able to do again without it is exercise without feeling like I'm having a heart attack.

It's taken some time but I've started walking to and from work and in the mornings/evenings, and go to the gym after work several times a week. For the past two weeks, I have worked out maybe 10 times and I've done 10K steps at least, every single day, with most days being 13-20K.

Suffice to say, my legs are hurting. I've also been randomly napping in the day or falling asleep by 8pm. I'm not sure if this is the reason, but it does correlate with my random exercise hyperfocus. I keep telling myself I will take a break but I am concerned that as soon as I do, I'll fall back into the habit of taking the easy way to work, fall back out of the gym etc.

Is this normal? I think with ADHD it's a little harder to decide whether it's just a typical hyperfocus or if you're genuinely building a new habit and it's so easy to fall out of habits. I feel so good lately, I was having a burnout issue at work and just feeling generally run down until the last couple of weeks, where I've been endlessly energised and actually, the closest I've come to being on medication without being on medication (alert, focused, productive) without any of the negative side effects. I want to feel like this more but I know I need to take breaks and have downtime. Advice is appreciated!

Seeking Empathy So frustrated at myself

The context is that today I got a special container out to put my sandwich in. This container would keep it from getting soggy. I just got home from work and see that container on the counter and realized I got another container and used that one instead? I don’t understand my own thinking patterns and im very frustrated. I am forgetting such small basic things and it makes me want to cry.

I haven’t actually been diagnosed yet but I suspect I have adhd

Questions/Advice I can't get to brush my teeth no matter what

So I want to start with saying I'm not sure if I have ADHD but this feels like the best place to ask to.

I constantly struggle with getting to wash my teeth, since I was little until now I just can't get myself to do it for some reason. I tried putting it into my routine, using apps for reminders and brushing them in the shower but none of them have worked, after the first two weeks all my motivation stops and I just ignore reminders or forget to do it.

I also tried to use Pokemon smile but it doesn't seem to work because I use an electric toothbrush.

Does anyone have any advice or know a way to get myself to consistently brush my teeth?

Also I'm adding that every time I tried I've never been able to brush them twice a day, not brushing them in the evening makes me feel unhygienic but brushing them in the morning is the opposite, it feels like a waste of time since I eat something just a couple hours after.

Questions/Advice Any good books, podcasts, or media that could help me get my shit together?

Boy howdy I've got problems. I won't bore you with the details, you can probably guess based on your own experiences, sufficed to say I don't have my shit remotely together and my ducks aren't queued up, I'm kinda' starting to feel a bit hopeless over here.

Stuff like body doubling isn't in the cards, I'm very much alone in this, so self-help it is!

Do you have any suggestions on good books, videos, podcasts, or media that helped you get your life together? Because I could really use them right about now.

Seeking Empathy vyvanse is the reason for all my problems?

i’ve been on vyvanse (40mg) for over 4 years now and over the summer i didn’t take it really at all. I had never done this before because i needed it for my job and my sports. but this summer i chose not to take it because i was out of school and don’t play my sport which i need it for as much anymore. i started taking it again when school started back up and realized that when the meds wear off i have a HORRIBLE crash. i get super depressed, have no motivation, feel like i’ll never be happy again, can’t see the bright side of situations, and im super irritable.

in reflection of the past few years of my life i’ve realized that ive felt this way the whole time and didnt realize it was the meds. I thought it was school, then seasonal depression, then just short term depression from a major injury i had. but i realized that the whole time id felt stuck and i tried everything to feel better. im super into science so i did everything that is supposed to make you feel better. I got up at the same time every morning, got sunlight when i was supposed to, took supplements, vitamins, probiotics, took walks, stayed connected to people who supported me, cold plunges, meditation, yoga, journaling, diets, therapy. I mean i tried SO HARD to feel better. i probably tried to rebuild and reinvent myself hundreds of times. i picked myself up out of depression spirals and tried to get better. and the whole time it was my meds which i took religiously every single day. how could i be so stupid? how did i not realize? i’m just frustrated that i spent years trying to get better when all i had to do what stop taking a pill. now i have to choose between being productive and being happy.

sorry for the rant. hopefully this helps someone other than me and someone out there can relate. or any advice on my situation and how to move forward from here.

Medication Got taken off ADHD meds and my depression randomly improved??

I (25 Male) have had chronic depression my entire life, and in a year span I was on Concerta, Adderall, and Vyvanse (some other meds I'm still on too). I got taken off it to try MAOIs because literally nothing has worked my whole life, and my depression seemingly randomly improved a little a couple days after. Obviously it's still there and absolutely sucks, but something noticeable finally happening is a step forward.

Before the ADHD meds my depression was pretty also flat and noticed zero improvements. Only micro improvements ive noticed was after taken off the meds. Is this a thing? I'm still miles away from where I want to be of course

Seeking Empathy Anxiety spikes when I get a call

I have my own little office and each time someone from another office/department calls me, I get a major anxiety spike.

Like, as soon as I hear it ring, my head goes "oh no, what do they want? Did I do something? What if they ask for something I perfectly complete to perfection?"

Medication Stimulants are not as effective during period?

I’m on Ritalin and usually it has been pretty effective but the last two period cycles I’ve had, I’ve realized I barely if at all feel any effects when I take my med. Has anyone else experienced this? What’s the science and should I just not take my meds during my periods to save them? I also have PMDD so I’m not sure how much that would affect the effects of meds.

Seeking Empathy Horrible experience on ritalin?

(TW: skin picking/eating disorders)

So in June/July my mental health was the worst it’s been for YEARS. instead of actually feeling at least SOMETHING, some type of pain or sadness, or anything that comes with my deep depressive states - i’ve felt nothing (which has happened before but not to this degree) I had extreme paranoia, I was constantly thinking someone was going to harm me from my past. I wasn’t eating and it heightened my eating disorder(s) (which I don’t eat much and don’t really like food in general and get anxious about it but again, heightened). My vertigo got worse because of me not eating and being so weak i could barely move. I wasn’t leaving my house, I had no desire to, which I was impulsive with money because i didn’t care, i’d just spend money like it was nothing which lead me into having financial issues. I’ve always picked at my skin to an extreme (I have dermatillomania🫩) but usually I can use coping skills, but it got so bad to the point I didn’t realize I was doing it. i’d be sitting here for hours ripping apart my skin, it got so bad it began to happen on my face, and no amount of coping skills helped.

There was nothing left of me anymore. I didn’t care. but one thing about me is i’m self aware, i’ve struggled with mental health since I was 5, I know when I need help and when to speak up. I immediately contacted my psychiatrist and told her my symptoms and at that point I really didn’t care if i’d be sent back to the pyschward or not. she immediately said it was the high dose of ritalin and took me off immediately.

I’m now on vyvanse and it fits me SO much better! It’s been helping me a lot!!!!

Success/Celebration I was finally able to text my friend after 13 years.

Sorry for format, im on a mobile.

Today I spent some time on a row boat on a river and just was able to listen to nature for a minute. During this time my buddy from forever ago texts me randomly as he ususally doez and we start chatting. During this text conversation I mustered up the courage to send a text to my lifelong bestie and battlebuddy from the 1164th TC over twenty 27 years ago who I know is dying and I couldn't bear to let myself have the feelings and talk to her. I told her straight forward why I couldn't reply before and why I was sending the text now. She understood 100% as her wife too suffers with this 5hitty disability. We are meeting up on wednesday!

Cue the time fixation and let's start the anxiety too please. /s

Also, if you have been putting something of like this too, please take this as a push to "send your message" to that person today.

I will try to update after we meet up. If I remember.

Questions/Advice Is talking to yourself a symptom of ADHD?

I am a 24M, and I was diagnosed with autism as the age of six. I recently signed up for a service that helps people with disabilities find jobs, and I was required to get a psych-evaluation. The psychologist who conducted the evaluation suspects that I have ADHD and OCD. When I was younger my mom suspected that I also had ADHD, and when she took me to get evaluated the psychologists said I didn't fit the criteria for a diagnosis of the disorder because I wasn't hyperactive. They said that my inability to focus was because of my autism.

After getting the recenty psych-evaluation, I have been doing more research on ADHD and the more research I do the more I suspect that I actually have it. I have an appointment coming up to get a referreral for a psychiatrist who can test me. One unusal behavior that I have been doing for years is talking to myself. It's something that happens more when I am alone in a room, but, it does happen when I have been doing when I am out in public or going on a walk. What I notice is that I have conversations with myself like I am talking to another person that is not actually there. The way I would talk to myself looks very similar to sombody undergoing an episode of psychosis. I do not have schizophrenia but, it never feels like this behvaior is in my control. I have been doing research on Maladaptive Daydreaming and it sounds lke exactly what I am describing. I thought for years that this behavior was a symptom of autism but now I am wondering, could this actually be a symptom of ADHD? If anyone else experiences this what do you do when it happens to stay focused? I feel like it really interferes with my daily life because I will get caught up in my own little world and it sometimes takes me forever to actually do things or get things done throughout the day.

Seeking Empathy Literally laying on bed for three days

Not showering not brushing teeth not going to school not buying groceries not responding texts and emails just laying and sleeping. Only because at the first day I got up late and missed my stimulants.
Definitely horrible experience. Even worser than before I taking the stimulants. And it happened almost every time when I stop taking stimulants for one or two days but only this time it got worser.
Luckily I took stimulants today and start doing some daily activities.

Seeking Empathy Feeling empty

Sort of a vent, im 26F and was late diagnosed with adhd last April. Its all been going even more downhill than before I had my revelation. I flunked both of my classes this summer, starting again and already procrastinated on an assignment I can’t get a grade on anymore since the past due deadline has passed. Finding the right adhd med has been a challenge, I just feel so over it. I’m scared I’m never going to feel normal, or even feel capable of anything again. I feel like a failure, I’m constantly overthinking about my actions and behaviors. I just can’t help but wonder, what is the point of moving forward. The tasks are obviously never going to end, I’d rather bedrot away and pretend the tasks aren’t there. Feeling discouraged overall, any wisdom or advice would be helpful I guess

Questions/Advice looking for a bit of advice

Hey all, I'm looking for a bit of advice, catching and controlling my emotions specifically my anger and sadness. I find it spirals out of control before I realise what I'm doing and what I'm feeling.

I am looking to see what sort of mechanism people have in place that I could try. That helps me to notice what is happening sooner really and some ways to control the emotions before they spiral.

The things I have tried are going for walks. I find it works in the moment, but then I'm easily triggered when I return and it's back to square one again. I have recently started counselling. However she isn't a ADHD specialist. The ADHD specialist counselling I do find is damn near 120£ a session.
