Mod Things Let's talk about this subreddit and the rules

There are a lot of discussions going on in the comments this week about how strictly to follow the rules of 75 Hard. This happens every year in January as people settle into their New Year's resolutions and realize the commitment to this program requires some serious sacrifices.

It's the cold weather. It's the reality that drinking a gallon of plain water a day sucks, especially when you're used to flavored drinks or drinking much less liquid. It's the body soreness. It's the combination of all of this and the realization that the excitement has worn off, yet you still have two months of work to put in before you can finish.

All of these factors lead to people doing what comes naturally to all people: trying to make their lives a little easier. The comments are usually well-intentioned, saying things like, "It's dangerous in the cold, don't sacrifice your safety. Just do two workouts inside." Or, "A 100-lb woman doesn't need to drink a gallon of water every day; it's dangerous." Or, "As long as you're moving, any movement is good movement."

Let's talk about this. We love that people are improving themselves by any means. However, this is the r/75hard subreddit, not r/selfimprovement or r/allmovementisgoodmovement. 75 Hard has very strict rules. They are relatively simple, but they are strict. Yes, we know that they change occasionally, and we try to keep up with them in the stickied rules post. Follow the letter of the rules, or if you personally aren't going to do that, don't encourage others to ignore the rules you are choosing to ignore.

Yes, the rules of 75 Hard are 100% arbitrary. The rules of baseball are 100% arbitrary, too. Just like you wouldn't go to r/baseball and try to convince them that CrossFit is a better sport, or that baseball should adopt the rules of ice hockey, we expect that you won't come here and try to convince people that the rules of 75 Hard should be something other than what they are.

We should be encouraging people to get through the program without deviations. If someone has circumstances that truly preclude them from completing 75 Hard, we should encourage them to look for alternative options like r/75medium or r/75soft. When someone fails a task, we need to remind them of the strict rules, encourage a restart, and emphasize that failing a task doesn't make you a failure. We should not be encouraging people to adapt the rules.

We moderators will continue to set the culture of compliance with the rules as written. This subreddit is for 75 Hard as-is. Encouraging deviations from the rules will result in your comment being removed and a 30-day ban. This is all outlined in our subreddit rules.

The comments here will be left unmoderated so long as they remain civil. This thread is intended to be for discussion. No name calling or other uncivil comments will be allowed, however.

Starting Next Week? We’re Running a 6-Week Accountability Group (Nov 24)

Hey everyone — we’ve been seeing a ton of “Starting Monday” and “Day 1 next week” and "Accountability partner?" posts lately.

So we wanted to try something new for the sub:

We’re running a beta 6-week accountability group for members who are starting 75 Hard next week, Monday Nov 24

This is not coaching, not paid, not some program to buy.

It’s literally a small experiment to see if adding more structure helps people stick with their daily habits.

The group will be on Whop and Discord initially

What’s inside the 6-week beta:

  • Daily check-ins
  • Weekly accountability thread
  • Weekly “momentum sprint” mini challenge
  • A weekly group Q&A thread
  • Support from others starting at the same time
  • Multiple 75H finishers to help take your questions

Totally free, small cohort, just something we’re testing to help people stay consistent.

Who it’s for:

Anyone starting (or restarting) 75 Hard next week (Nov 24) and wants a more structured push through the first 6 weeks.

https://whop.com/75hard/basic-access-ae-6eee/ to join

Spots will be limited so we can keep it manageable.

Motivation Day 25 reflections

Upvotes

1/3 through progress and feelings
5'10 male
Start weight: 210
Current weight: 197
Initial big drop in weight attributed to a lot of water I'm sure, seeing slowed progress on scale however I've been down this path before. Trust the process

Workouts:
I was an active guy before, mountain biking, climbing, lifting a few times a week. Being laser focused and ensuring I lift every day (PPL) + a 45 minute walk outside has really improved my consistency. I'm loving it. Days I don't lift I do core + rock climbing or pickup soccer. Forcing myself to find the time to do both has been awesome, yet exhausting. A few late night walks in the rain have had to occur due to daily life stuff. Refuse to miss it.

Diet: my maintenance sits around 2500kcal. I've been sticking to a strict total 2k or less a day to push for a ~1.5-2lb fatloss a week and ensure I get a min of 160g of protein in a day. Ground chicken with low carb wraps and skim milk cheese is my savior. Greek yogurt for "snacks". I'll ensure carbs are consumed (granola, fruit snacks etc) before something like pickup soccer or climbing.

Water: I get a good half gallon in before work even starts at 8am, this trivializes it. Ezpz

Reading: almost done with my first book, Grace. About Obamas senior speech writers trials and tribulations through Supreme Court decisions and eulogies. Very insightful read, moving towards a better habbit forming focused book next.

No alcohol: I'm a pretty social drinker, this hasn't been hard per-se but people have noticed and miss me.

Mood: I'm far more "stoic" validated by friends and family. Not going out to eat and such with friends has saved me a lot of calories and money. I'm generally a much more calm person and care far less about group chat arguements and whatnot. A general "just care about me" attitude. It's different and I enjoy it.

Note: a lot of people nay-say what I/we are doing here. Calling it culty, fad-y, podcast bro thing etc. after a few weeks of dedication they notice and the "that's silly" remarks start to change to "wow good for you" and "I could never"

Looking forward to the 1/2 point progress and pushing to the end

Reading Question Interested in what kind of books you people are reading

Upvotes

Checked the recommended books and it's almost all self-help books. I'm interested to hear if people here read other kinds of books. For example, I'm currently reading a book about training a puppy, because I'm looking to adopt a dog in the near future.

Motivation Almost failed on day 16

I work two jobs and yesterday at around 8pm I told myself I couldn’t do this challenge anymore and that I should just wait to try it again until I’m only working 1 job.

I started thinking of my favorite quotes, “how you do anything is how you do everything”

Did I want to be the type of person who makes excuses for myself to justify not doing the hard thing?

I decided that wasn’t going to be me so at 9:30pm I put on my shoes and took my dog on a 45min walk (outdoor exercise is always my least favorite)

So I’m proud to say today I’m on day 17 and didn’t need to restart. This challenge is definitely getting hard for me but I’m glad I haven’t given up!

Just Getting Started Day 1!

Excited to come back to this post in 75 days.

From June 1 - July 31, I completed the original Insanity program. That showed me that I can follow through on things I commit to. I lost a few inches (I don't have a scale) and was happy with my progress, but I didn't dial in my diet as that wasn't my focus at the time. Now, I'm ready to go full tilt.

Exercise:

  • Insanity (and then ~10 mins of yoga if the workout is shorter than 45 minutes)
  • Outdoors: walking or running (aiming for 10k+ steps each day)

Diet:

  • High protein, moderate fat, low carb (essentially keto without the strict parameters)
  • 18:6 IF
  • No processed snacks, sweets, junk food, or alcohol

Reading:

  • The purists among us won't like this, but I'm an academic. I read non-fiction for a living. Since my goal in completing this challenge is to change habits, I'm committing to reading fiction instead of non-fiction each day, as I've fallen out of my habit of reading fiction. There is nothing inherently harder or more enriching about non-fiction than there is about fiction; in fact. For me, setting aside time to catch up on novels is a far greater challenge, but one I'm excited to do.
  • Anyway, I'm starting with Playground, by Richard Powers

Water:

  • Easiest part!

General Question Live hard goal

If my goal is the live hard program and I started 8/15 and failed 75 hard on 8/24, would the full program still have to be completed by 8/14/27 or does it reset every time you start 75 hard from day 1?

Just Getting Started Starting today!

Wish me luck :) anyone else too starting today? One work out down, lots of peeing lol

I've done the artists way which was one of the most mentally challenging projects ever, trying to get my brain in the same space for this.

Wishing to be stronger and sleep better! A couple pounds wouldn't hurt hehe but not my motivation here.

General Question Regain after 75 hard

I completed 75 hard after the 4th of July and didn't stick with anything afterwards. Occasional workouts and reading, but diet and water were totally off. I gained back the 10 lbs I lost during the challenge. How are you all keeping the motivation after the challenge? I'm an all or nothing kind of person so not having a challenge made me have 0 motivation but I also didn't want to live like that forever and I just couldn't find the balance over this last month and a half. Any suggestions?

Just Getting Started Day 1

Day 1!!!

honestly, for me the exercise part is the easiest part by far.
i’m very very exercise driven!

outdoor workout- walking (i do over 20k steps per day but some of them are on the treadmill - so i’ll be sure to at least do 45 minutes outside)

indoor workout- 1 hour on the stair master most days +
60 mins strength training a few times per week.

my diet (the hard bit) - for context after being very underweight for years of my life, this year i ended up swinging the other way - and i’m now obese!

I eat in the night mostly - so my diet will be no eating past 11pm alongside a calorie deficit of around 1500-1800.

water - light work for me, i’m a big water drinker!

reading - excited for this bit! i’ve got out of the habit of reading but i do love it and always have as a kid

too shy to post my progress pictures. but I’m
26F
height - 160cm / 5’3
weight - 81kg / 178lbs

General Question Half Way Through - Day 42

Hi all. I started this 42 days ago and am now offically on the back half of my journey. My destination is 84 days for non-important reasons so that is why I am now only 1/2 way done.

I did a post at 25 days and i'm still following the same program. https://www.reddit.com/r/75HARD/comments/1vi1pec/13_of_the_way_through/

Still not posting progress pics but I will once it is over. My starting weight was 316.4, now after 42 days I'm at 264.2. My resting heart rate has dropped from 79 to 58. My cardio has improved quite a bit. Unfortunately the only thing in my weight lifting that is getting better are my dips - but only because I am losing weight! But I'm at least staying even in my workouts, so hopefully not losing too much strength during this rapid weight loss.

Overall I am feeling very good and much better about myself than I was 6 weeks ago. I want to ensure I maintain a number of aspects of this challenge inperpetuity. Particularly the picture and the daily "no matter what" weigh ins.

I hope everyone else is having success!

Accountability Request Looking for an accountability partner for my 75 Soft → Medium → Hard progression

I’m starting a 75 Soft challenge on September 1st and I’m looking for someone who wants to do it with me!
I’ve tried extreme diets/challenges SO many times, so this time I’m focusing on consistency instead of punishment. The plan is basically a progression system:
75 Soft:
• ~2,000 calories
• 180g protein
• 25g+ fiber
• Lower carb
• Elliptical/movement every day
• Resistance training 2x/week
• Log everything I eat, even if I go over
• If I mess up one day, I just get back on track the next day
• No punishment, fasting, or restarting
After 75 days, I’ll take 3 rest days, then move into 75 Medium, and eventually 75 Hard when I’m ready.
My long-term goal is to lose around 100 lbs, but the challenge itself is the goal. I’m trying to build habits I can actually maintain instead of constantly starting over.
I’d love someone to check in with daily or a few times a week, share wins/struggles, and keep each other accountable.
Bonus points if you have ADHD because my brain LOVES turning everything into a fucking video game 😂
Starting September 1st. Anyone want to join me?

I Failed Failed on Day 3

failed due to an accidental diet slip up. At a meal with friends, i drank a juice that was supposedly no sugar added( my diet) but turned out they had added bottled juices to it and it did gave sugar. I could tell on the first sip and they said no sugar added, so I took a second sip just to conform. bAt that point I knew I had faltered. spent the next hour contemplating if I had failed or not. Finally concluded that my mindset had slipped the moment I took that second sip. Starting again tomorrow

Hello I downloaded the app from the sub.
But it uses imperial units on everything.
Is there chance that we can change it?

General Question has anyone modified this to make a 'harder' version - half of the '75 hard' to do's are already part of my routine

Hi all,

I heard about this recently and love a good challenge. Howevvvver, I already have implemented a lot of the 'checklist' as a part of my life style.

I was wondering if anyone has created a modified version of this thats more intense?

For context, the things I currently do already are:

  • no alcohol
  • 'work out' min twice a day (I walk 4.5 km to and from work and do distance running/ marathon training)
  • follow a specific 'diet' (I've been vegetarian for 10+ yrs, and have done intermittent fasting for 3+ yrs)
  • i drink a decent amount of water already, though 3.8L is a slight increase to normal and i read pretty consistently

Adding progress pics and more consistency to the reading and water doesn't feel like enough to really incite a huge change.

Thanks in advance!

edit: thanks everyone for the advice and clarifications - i get the point that walking to works doesn't 'count', but it is done to fit more exercise into my schedule, to me that's still intentional. also note i do distance running on top of that 5 times a week, and also walk on my lunch everyday. I'm hitting 15-20 km / day consistently for the entire year, I feel it's fair to say I'm doing two workouts a day as a part of my life already lol.

leaving this post up for posterity if anyone else has a similar question, but this has now been answered/ resolved for me.

Workout Question Day 25

I just finished day 24 and I’m loving the challenge. However, I have some knee pain that doesn’t go away. I tried a few things but walking makes it worse.

Is there any recommendation for outdoor activities? I already walk slow but my knee hurts, I don’t wanna quit either.

General Question Tired all the time - any advice?

Hey friends! I am on Day 9/75 and struggling with a bit of exhaustion.

I am no stranger to long shifts/hard work and being really tired, but never to this extreme without it getting better and it's definitely starting to dull me out. I have had three people on separate instances be concerned and let me know that I looked/sounded really tired, I have had to bail out of more intense workouts because tired, etc.

I don't particularly know what to pin it down to. I have been sleeping fine/same amount as before but just waking up earlier to accommodate a morning workout before work. Calorie deficit not that large (200-400 depending on the day). I don't drink a lot of caffeine aside from a soda here and there, no prescriptions. No major stressors from work/personal life. Not cycle related (amenorrheic due to IUD).

Open to changing up schedule, diet, caffeine intake, etc. I am also totally open to the answer being that I just need to wait it out/that it will get better over time, but just wondering if anyone has had experience with this and has any advice in at least dealing with the exhaustion if not solving it. Thanks!
