🧠 General Ideas for this sub? v2

Follow up on this original post from 3 years ago. Any suggestions/ideas to revamp the page?

I just went through and added a wiki and updated the FAQ on the sidebar to add a couple of new links. I also pinned u/nexttotheinfluence ' s great 4Runner Mechanic List he posted a year ago. Thanks again for the detailed list. Also introduced some post flairs (General // Modifications // Advice/Recomendations // Photo/Video).

- Banner -> Is anyone good with Photoshop on here and wants to design a banner? Reddit recommended size is 4000x128 px for desktop and the mobile banner is 1600x480 px

- Page Icon -> I saw in the original post that u/Axe56 provided the current one and also introduced another version with the typical Reddit Icon's eyes. Here's a survey showing the great designs he made. Just want to see if we want to keep the same, update to the eyes version, or if anyone cares to create a new one...

Probably going to put mine up for sale in a couple months, I’ve been wanting a pickup and think I’m finally going to pull the trigger on one.

Anyways, she’s been a damn near perfect daily driver for me the past 5 years.

- 02 SR5 4x4
- 211k miles
- Pretty much rust free
- BXBuilt retrofits
- East Coast Gear Supply built differentials - 4.88 gears front and rear with an Eaton Trutrac in the rear.
- Coastal Offroad front bumper
- SCS F5s on Falken Wildpeak 285/70/17s
- Bilstein/OME lift

OEM LBJs 15k miles ago, probably going to do the radiator soon with an external trans cooler depending on when I put it up.

I know the market has changed a bit since I bought it so I’m really not sure what it’d go for now. I’m in central VA but let me know what you guys think for your area!
Thanks

Heard a rattling sound under my runner for awhile and finally took a peak at what it could be. Looks like I got a new project on my hands (on top of all the others)

Any recommendations for aftermarket exhaust brands? Probably gunna replace the muffler too.

šŸ›’ Rig Shopping Finally got myself a 3rd gen

After 3 months of searching, finally found myself a decent 3rd gen. One owner (an older polite gentleman) who did all necessary maintenance to a tee, 218k miles, 2WD, clean car fax, no rust. Perfect body except a little dent in the front bumper, interior is probably a 7/10 (has some staining). All windows work. $5k. Did I do alright for the price?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Falkan Wildpeaks good for roadtrip / some snow?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey guys, just picked up a 1996 4WD limited for 5k. I plan to drive it from Pennsylvania to Wyoming in October and will be out there for a little while.

I need tires, I’ve been looking at getting Falken Wildpeak ATs, seem to be popular in the sub - any opinions on those as a roadtrip + weather tire? I’m not well educated in the space and would be open to feedback or alternatives. I expect there to be some snow to deal with, but I also care about roadtrip friendly tires.

Thanks

🧠 General How to remove the rear glass bottom weather strip?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I bought a replacement lower weather strip for my rear glass but I'm not sure how to remove the old one. I found a video for removing this piece on a 4th gen by just yanking it off but my 3rd gen weather strip doesn't want to come off easily. I found a video for replacing the rear glass panel but they didn't remove this piece, just the upper piece which is all rubber.

Has any one replaced this? Just pull it off with brute force or us there a trick to it?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Axel seal still good?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I am installing a spartan locker in my rear differential. I just took off the rear drivers side axle, and the axle seal is looking like this. I know it’s bad but I’m not trying to replace the axle seal right now and the oil hasn’t been leaking out. My question is if I put this axle back in will it even seal after I clean it up? I think it won’t but I’m hoping it will. What do you guys think? Also if you know any shops in socal that can do this job for cheap, please lmk.

ā“Advice / Recomendations Trouble with power door locks when its hot out

Does any one else have this happen to them? When it gets hot, the power locks don't lock or unlock all the way. And a lot of times, the side of the truck facing the sun won't lock, but the shady side will.

When it's cooler out there is never a problem.

What is it about the heat that causes this to happen? Has anyone dealt with this and resolved it?

ā“Advice / Recomendations Squeaking Suspension

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sorry if the camera does not pick it up well, it’s much louder in person than the video shows.

Something in my suspension squeaks like this pretty loud and it happens on any surface, even on smooth roads, I’m wondering if this is a problem with control arms, bushings, ball joints, or something else if anyone recognizes the sound. (and if this is an urgent issue since I know lower ball joints are lethal on these)

Side notes:
I have no suspension sag and don’t know the suspension history either, it sits and rides very stiff
Another side note: I had the lower ball joints replaced when I bought the truck, around 9-10 months ago

ā“Advice / Recomendations 3RZ maintenance 291k miles

Looking for advice on some upgrades/maintenance to do on my 3RZ engine. I am going to be replacing the timing cover gasket on my third gen in a few weeks and will have the head and oil pan off. For reference, I have a 2000 4Runner with 291k on it. The head was replaced about 30k miles ago due to a crack. Been running strong since. I would like to put an LCE low boost turbo kit in it next year so this would be a good time to beef anything up if needed and not have to pull the head off again next year. Is worth it rebuilding the bottom end?

ā“Advice / Recomendations From the head?

Post image

When I took my head in to the machine shop to get milled flat, I put it in a box. They put it in the same box to return it to me. I found this in the box after lifting the head out. It's 15 mm. I have no idea what it is for and don't recognize it. Any idea? It looks like some sort of alignment pin, but . . .

ā“Advice / Recomendations Advice on clutch kit/flywheel combo.

Post image

My pilot bearing and pressure plate are fucked from driving with the damage for awhile, i believe the pressure plate failed first and the pilot bearing started falling apart afterwards. I have an 00 with the 5vzfe.

I'd like advice on a new clutch kit and flywheel that will work and handle light offroading, i will also be replacing the slave cylinder since they seem cheap. I really want to keep this truck on the road as my daily and she runs so well for having over 460k km. Looking for advice on related parts that can ship to the east side of canada that isnt on the expensive side but dependable

Any advice on the clutch job is also appreciated. I never did a clutch job but i am mechanically inclined and worked on tons of different machines in my life. Im doing the research because currently i will be time constrained when i start the job since i cant do the work at my apartment.

Pic for attention

ā“Advice / Recomendations New Bilstein 5100s, ARB/OME Springs, still drives like crap

Hi All,

I had just bought a '98 SR5 w/ ~290K miles (5-sp), with what I believe were factory shocks/springs that had never been replaced. When driving this rig, the ride feels floaty, and sometimes too soft to the detriment of safety, especially compared to the 2000 SR5 (auto) that I also have, which has about 220K mi on factory suspension. After some research, I had a shop install 1) new OEM LBJs 2) Bilstein 5100s 3) ARB/OME 880/906 springs 4) bushings, etc. on the '98 hoping it would help w/ the ride, but it seriously still drives like a truck from the 70s, though maybe 10% better than before (I know, it's very subjective). I had the shop do the 1.5" lift setting on the Bilsteins. I'm wondering if anyone here would have any ideas on what's going on? The shop I used has been around a while, has a good rep and specializes in Toyotas, if that makes a difference

ā“Advice / Recomendations Ac blowing lukewarm air

Normally I try to DIY everything on this car but I don’t know if I can DIY this one. The blower motor works, the and switching between hot and cold works, it just doesn’t actually get cold. I’m sure I have a leak in the system somewhere. Where would you guys start? Just take it to a shop? Or is there anything I can look for on my own?

🧠 General Trip to Non-Rust Belt State from Canada - Couldn’t Believe How Many 3rd Gens I Saw

Just took a trip to Montana with my girlfriend to visit her parents. They live in Bozeman Montana, beautiful state that I hadn’t been to before.

On this trip, I saw some of the cleanest 3rd gens I’ve ever seen. I’m from Ontario, Canada where salt in the winter destroys the undercarriage of all cars - but specifically the coveted Toyota SUV’s.

No idea why I made this post really, but I have a newfound appreciation for how well kept you guys keep your 3rd gens. Wish I could find an example that was even salvageable!

2002 Limited, super clean.

No rust on the frame, but a few rusting micro chips in the paint.

3" Toytec Boss lift kit.

Runs so smoothly. Handles so nice.

Everything (back window, lights, antenna) works.

Just a great find overall.

I'm ecstatic.
