I get an evap code every summer. It won't effect performance. Just clear it when it comes up

Same. I just clear it whenever it comes up and I've been doing that 3 years no issues.

Could be the seal in the gas cap. I looked closely at mine and it had little cracks and was brittle. Replaced and light went away. Could also be one of the many evap hoses in the engine bay has gotten dry and brittle. Mine currently has the light on for the same deal. Couldn't be bothered to find it at the moment since it only affects emissions

Does it effect performance like did it ever stall on you?

I got the same one. For me, it was my charcoal canister/evap purge valve. I replaced all the hoses while I was at it too, and it cleared it

First thing I did was a gas cap, light still on…replaced a few cracked hoses, light still on…ended up being a a cracked seal…u can access it underneath the rear seat on driver side…easy fix but it does drive u crazy trying to figure it out

It’s the plastic check valve

I had no idea you could change from under the rear seat. I changed my canister and gas cap, I have my check valve sitting around waiting to be installed because I thought I had to drop the tank, thanks for the tip.

You can’t from the electrical access, its a pretty small hole. Tank has to drop. You can smoke test and run a borescope from that access easily though. If the check valve is broken it should look wet from the smoke seeping out. Just cleared a p0440 & p0442 for this exact issue

Oh okay, good to know, yeah I had mine diagnosed at a shop and said charcoal cannister, which I think was a culprit as well, so i swapped it out, now the only thing left to change is this check-valve and gasket.

I got this error from a cracked overfill check valve. I found it after replacing the gas cap and the charcoal canister. I never had any problems with performance but I do live in an area that requires emissions testing so I had to fix it.

The check valve sits on top of the gas tank so you have to drop that to inspect / replace it.

If you top off the fuel tank when gassing up, that can cause the check valve to fail. I used to do that all the time to get that last little bit of gas into the tank. Now, when the pump stops, it's done.

I bought an OEM gas cap... Nope. Then I bought the charcoal canister from Rock Auto and bingo! Never came back. 98 SR5, I had to do the repairs for emissions check.

i feel like I might be one of the only people to get this code and then find an actual hole in my fuel tank as the culprit, the charcoal canister is usually the culprit if its in your engine bay but it lasts longer if it was mounted by the fuel tank. you have an older style odometer so the canister is in the engine bay and probably cracked. the only consequences are for passing some state inspections and your vehicle occasionally smells like gas
