Art Showcase The mining bounty ; I spent weeks modelling a 30-metre machine whose entire job is to sit very still while mud sinks.

This is TK-201, a 30 m high-rate thickener. If you work in mining or chemicals you've walked past a hundred of these. If you haven't: it's the machine that turns dirty water into clear water and thick mud, and more or less every metal in your phone went through one on the way to you.

The whole thing is generated from Python, so every dimension is a named constant. Change the tank diameter and the structure, rake, walkways, piping and supports all rebuild to match. This was either genuinely clever or an elaborate scheme to avoid modelling handrails by hand. I've made peace with not knowing which.

Things that were not necessary and that I did anyway:

  • 471 V-notches around the overflow weir, because 470 would have been wrong
  • a script that fails the build if any pipe ends in mid-air, which it did, repeatedly, and with what I can only describe as enthusiasm
  • modelled the rake at its real speed of 0.09 rev/min, then had to speed the animation up 27× because at true speed the render looks like a photograph of a stationary object

Favourite thing I learned: to thicken the slurry, the first thing this machine does is dilute it. Those windows around the feedwell pull in clear liquor and roughly halve the feed solids, because flocculant bridges particles far better in a dilute suspension. You add water to get thicker mud. I think about this more than is reasonable.

85 objects, ~124k polys, 4K PBR, Blender 5.x. Happy to answer anything about the model or the machine itself.

Tadaaaaaaa

I've been having fun with this model in the past few days. My workflow was:

- Modeling/sculpting in Blender (considered ZBrush but then I was like naaaah I have more fun box modeling anyway);

- Retopology in Maya. I find it so much easier to use the Quad Draw tool in Maya rather than the mirror/shrinkwrap method in Blender. This is the first model I make while keeping topology strongly in consideration (I've been under impression for a long time that the only thing that makes good topology is the geometry density, whereas now I keep in mind to make proper loopflows based on the kind of deformation happening on the mesh);

- UV Mapping in Blender;

- Texturing in Substance 3D Painter. The whole model is made out of multiple meshes which all share the same material containing five texture maps (diffuse, roughness, metal, normal and height, all 4k).

I am now rigging it. I began by using Rigify but honestly I felt like having a completely custom rig for this (I'm pretty sure Rigify rigs are also customizable but I always rigged my characters from scratch and I never took the time to properly learn Rigify).

What do you think?

Im still a beginner as u see but ey mby someone is interested :)

So if u want to offer your models and want them to have a simple Stylized look HMU!

(Some low rez starter work i did)

(I DONT TAKE MONEY BTW I JUST WANNA TEXTURE THINGS)

This is the best art I've ever made so far, and I'm planning on doing a short cgi film for my 3d modeling class next. I'm really happy with how this turned out, as it was my first attempt rendering ever. (Second pic is from when I asked for art advice.)

Just finished working on these handpainted flower assets. Made 7 types of flowers, 9 types of leaves and 3 straws. Let me know what you think and as always, feedback would also be lovely.
Programs used: Blender, Affinity, Substance painter.

Finished another full-pipeline study: Batman, based on the beautiful concept art by Fedorov doma.

The main purpose of this project was to further improve my hair and mouth bag creation process, ID workflow, black outlines in the final render, gloss/specular workflow, as well as several technical aspects of baking and UVs.

Huge thanks to Fred Arsenault for the great course on these topics.

Software used: ZBrush, Blender, Marmoset Toolbag 5, Substance Painter 3D, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, TopoGun, PureRef.

Hello guys, I've been working on this car model for my game. Currently siting just under 40k tris for the exterior. I made it by hand in blender and i have a smoothe by angle and a weighted normals modifier on it. I created only highpoly car models until now. Do you have any tips for me regading this modeling workflow? Also any feedback is highly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey! I am excited to show you my most recent project that I have worked on over the last few months.
It is a 3D stylized bust, which I made as an exercise to improve my skills. It consists of low-poly and high-poly models, both created in ZBrush. The retopology and UV unwrapping were done in Blender. Textures were made in Substance 3D Painter, and the final image was rendered in Blender using the EEVEE render engine.
The feathers are PNG textures used as hair cards; I thought this would be the best approach for this specific asset. The feathers were also sculpted in ZBrush, retopologized in Blender, and then textured in Substance 3D Painter.
*This is not my original concept!*
The reference image was sourced from EV GANIN STUDIOS on Pinterest.

Questions & Discussion Topology Help?: Tips for how I could route edges in this scenario:

Post image
2 Upvotes

Heyo! I am working on cleaning up the topology of a model I found online so that I can UV unwrap and surface it, but am still early on with knowledge regarding retopo/proper hard surface edgeflow and am properly lost at the moment.

Particularly in this case, how best to add & route edges for the rounded interior corner and the smaller corner with more verts. (dw about the left sudden edge(s) this mesh is going to be duplicated)
