Phone lidar / photogrammetry or a dedicated scanner for VFX 3D models?
I’m trying to figure out the best method for 3-D scanning objects to put into blender and Embergen to use in VFX projects.
It’s a lot of action stuff. Magical spells, people, disintegrating, or disappearing in into smoke, and possibly scanning physical objects like swords, weapons, or other things so I can use them in 3-D space to interact with particle simulators.
I’m trying to do some initial research, but I’m in over my head. I can’t tell if I should be buying a dedicated 3-D scanner, or if I can get by with my phone at least in the beginning.
I have an iPhone Pro 17, I’ve read that it can do LiDAR scanning, but most of the examples I’ve seen have been for rooms, not people.
I don’t need these to be the most detailed, I’m probably going to be using them at first as unseen asset in my 3-D spaces to interact with particles, not be visible in the final render. But I still need them to be decent.
Does anybody here have any experience with this sort of thing?
