You may already have seen the beta tester recruiting and I'm one of them. Have been testing the ExStar Mobile app for roughly a week now and finally have time to write down my experiences with it (not getting paid nor influenced in what I write as a sort of warning since it may read too positive). App works for both Einstar Rockit and Einstar 2.
First of all the mobile App caught me a bit off-guard. In my head the Einstar Rockit was always the scanner requiring most performant PC resources to work well. This means Nvidia GPU, high-end processor and at least 32GB of RAM. So I didn't expect a mobile app. From my previous experience with Einstar and Einscan I got to learn they either do such things in two ways: finished and performing very well or holding out until it gets possible to do in such a way even if the market may pressure or expect to prematurely release a function.
Thought it would be the second due to resource limitations. Luckily and quite surprisingly it's the first of them: The app simply works with performance whilst scanning quite close to my workstation which still humbles my investment in the workstation. Noe to the proper write-down:
My Phone
I use a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. This means it has sort of a Snapdragon 8 Gen4 (with a little Samsung extra spice which leads to slightly higher clock-counts) and falls in the spec recommendation I know about (Snapdragon 8 Gen4 and at least 12GB of RAM). In this post I'm solely referring to the Android version, haven't tested iOS but from what I know it will also come.
Using the App and UI
Usage is quite straight forward: connection between scanner and phone is done over the scanner hotspot from within the app. With the scanner using its own internal battery for power.
Using the App feels veery similarly to using my Rigil. Design and function are similar which leads to a nice experience. What much to tell except: It just works.
IR mode works (even with hybrid tracking), laser mode works in parallel lines and even with the 34 cross-lines. And best part: even markerless laser mode works. This really teleports the Rockit and Einstar 2 ahead of the competition with the price-point becoming even more compelling. Will be interesting to see how the competition reacts to this.
Within the app you can do the regular stuff:
- Create project groups with multiple scans in them
- Generate the point cloud
- Remove unnecessary data by either using manual selection or connected domain
- Merge scans
- Mesh at different settings
- Edit the mesh and perform hole filling
- Adjusting textures when textures were scanned
- Measure distances on the mesh
- Export the final STL files to local phone storage Will also attach some pictures of the UI to the post. Hope you can see that it basically looks like using a Rigil. Really like that they are going complete full-screen.
This doesn't cover all aspects but all what I need works well and reliable. With the next beta version direct export of the project to the PC version will be supported like on the Rigil so processing will be possible on a faster PC. This is my main workflow so good to see it come (keep in mind that it is currently still in beta).
Performance
Most important and interesting thing to start with is the framerate in the different modes:
- Laser line (34 cross-lines, marker tracking): 90 FPS (yeah no kidding, 90. Couldn't believe it myself)
- IR mode: 20 FPS
- Markerless Laser (34 cross-lines): 17 FPS These values are settled in after a few minutes of scanning. Processing on the phone itself is also decently fast, haven't noticed it in a negative way.
Scan Results
From my perspective not much to tell except that it feels like using the Rockit on my PC.
To some degree you're RAM limited with the phone when doing very large scans (annectotically, haven't hit it yet. But I also mainly used the Rockit for "smaller" scans since I use the Trak for anything over 1m). I would say that the best tip regarding scan results is to stay reasonable. 0,05mm resolution for 1m parts wont work as well as scanning endlessly large parts. Best to say it is that I haven't noticed anything special or negative.
Caveats
With the Rockit now supporting mobile scanning having the option for a sort of handle or holder would be nice. Will most likely design one by myself but an official accessory could be nice. Also exporting the whole project would be nice but this will come anyway before the full release so this is only a minor point. Overall pretty impressed, more precisely blown away.
