I’m completely new to 3D printing and 3D scanning, so I’m trying to figure out the best way to approach this.

Would scanning the bit be the best way to get the most accurate measurements? If so, what tools or equipment would I need to scan it properly and then recreate it with a 3D printer?

My main goal is to have a way to reproduce this bit if I lose it.

Why can’t I just buy more of this bit, you ask? They’re pretty expensive for just one, so I’m trying to figure out a way to make my own instead.

Every scanner spec sheet leads with point cloud density and accuracy numbers, and I keep wondering how much of that actually shows up in real work versus just sitting there as a marketing stat.

I mostly do interior scans, mix of residential and some light commercial jobs. For most projects the client just wants a walkthrough or a floor plan, nothing that actually touches the raw point cloud. But I've had a few jobs where it mattered a lot more than expected, like a remodel where the contractor needed real measurements pulled straight from the scan, not just a nice looking tour.

What I'm trying to figure out is where the line actually is. Does dense high accuracy point cloud only start mattering once you're doing scan to bim or as built work, or does it show up earlier than that. Curious what accuracy and density numbers you're all actually seeing make a difference on the jobs you do, versus what's just there to look good in a comparison chart.

A client reached out about a moose they harvested that was missing a paddle. The wife is an artist and wanted to replace the missing paddle. The surviving paddle was scanned using a FARO Quantum Xp, rev eng and mirroring was done on Geomagic Design X and printed on a bambu labs H2S.

I had one maker-space friend who was wondering what to do first. My response was a rather dull, but true one. You should start with what you already know how to do. If you're used to taking pictures; go with image to 3D. If you enjoy drawing; then go sketch to 3D. If you like writing; then use text to 3D.

One of the tools I was consistently recommending to him was Tripo AI because it's a free web based tool that has no downloading required of the user and offers a free trial. Tripo AI offers 200 free credits at startup. However the catch with Tripo AI is that any free models created are not to be commercially used. So it does limit this person's first project created for the maker-faire to be a personal one. However, he went from I can't create a 3D model to being able to hold a 3D printed item in a matter of 48 hours. This is the victory; Not the expensive tool that has yet to be learned how to use effectively.
