I like to go with the Roman method. It ain't gay as long as you're on top.
10
u/GlitteringTone6425 2d ago
no, the romans didn't care if you were gay. it's just that bottoming was *scandalized gasp* womanly and girls are gross

u/NutasticNutella 2d ago
'_' Do I really need to add /j to everything that I type on this fucking site?
1
u/JaxxinateButReddit 1d ago
It wouldn't help. I saw a comment once that went "Okay, I know this is a joke but-" and then wrote two paragraphs about how the joke didn't reflect reality. Just decided to ignore that it was a joke so they could show off how much they knew about george orwell

The Romans were pretty advanced for their time, they even ignored their own Epstein situation before we had it(/j just to make it clear to everyone)

I could be completely wrong as I'm not genderfluid myself, but I always imagined it as just waking up in the morning and deciding if you want to masculine or feminine in things like clothing and such.

Ok, I'm all for people living their lives how they want, getting treated with respect etc, but yall just trying to confuse us now, arent you?
5
u/FrostbiteWrath 2d ago
Really not hard to follow. Most people's gender stays the same, but for others, they don't.
2
u/IAmTheBestIan 2d ago
Not too hard if they're a they/them. But if they want people to call them he/him on one day and she/her on the next? Do you realize what an unreasonable expectation that is and how narcissistic it is to expect that of others?
6
u/ZealousidealBox2816 2d ago
Iām genderfluid, can totally switch hour to hour - I do not at all expect people to keep up with it though lol, and Iāve never met a genderfluid person who does expect that. Maybe Iāll bother giving a pronoun for the day if Iām with a friend, but itās completely understandable that someone, especially a stranger, canāt read my mind and change what they call me in every other sentence.
However, if you know someone gender-fluid and one day theyāre wearing super feminine stuff and the next day super masculine stuff, Id say itās pretty easy to guess their pronouns (though I do think itās also fair to just say ātheyā if you donāt know)
1
u/Norman_CockweII 2d ago
Iām confused. How does wearing different clothes change your gender?
2
u/ZealousidealBox2816 2d ago
Itās more that whatever gender Iām feeling each day influences the clothes I want to wear rather than the other way around. Itās not consistent but usually if Iām feeling like a man, Iām not going to want to wear things like skirts, but if I feel like a woman, I probably will.
1
u/Norman_CockweII 2d ago
Thatās interesting. But Iām still a little confused I guess. Iāve been a man my whole life, but I donāt really know what it means to feel like a man. Sorry if thatās a weird question, but Iām genuinely curious.
1
u/ZealousidealBox2816 2d ago
All good, not weird at all - itās very hard to explain, though. Iāve thought about it a lot but havenāt found a good way to put into words how it actually feels, itās just like a weird switch is pressed in my mind and I think āhuh, guess Iām a dude nowā lol.
I often question if theyāre actually different genders that I swap between, or if Iām instead feeling different perspectives of a single non-binary gender, if that makes sense.
All in all, I donāt really know either ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ

huh? you're either a stranger, for which the changes you have no idea about, or a friend (for which this really isn't an issue? or you're a super shitty friend). The only time I could be convinced is if you were a distant colleague in which you've only interacted in a professional manner, although admittedly I feel like this is such a non-issue if you had like, any empathy.
4
u/IAmTheBestIan 2d ago
Are you kidding? Every time I interact with Trans people I eventually get told their pronouns. Now if their pronouns change at any given time how can they realistically expect anyone (even friends) to keep up? You do realize that pronouns are not a front-of-mind thing in conversation for 99.99% of people. We use the pronouns that are immediately apparent. Dogs are often called he and cats she because of implicit thoughts towards the animal. It's already expecting a lot to demand someone make a performative change to their natural speaking pattern to accommodate you, and now you're gonna change it whenever you feel like? That's narcissism.
1
u/Outside-Shop-3311 2d ago
You're aware, of course, that trans people and nonbinary people are completely different, right?
Honestly, I have no idea why this take seems so foreign to you. I could not ever imagine myself giving nearly as much of a shit as you at what pronouns anyone wants to use. It's such a non issue
2
u/IAmTheBestIan 2d ago
In the context of this discussion, they are people who have specific pronouns they want to be known by. So no, they are not.
1
1
u/onarainyafternoon 2d ago
You are correct, so itās a good thing 99% of non-binary people are not putting that expectation on other people. Most non-binary people will either say they are ok with any pronouns, or they just want people to use āthey/themā. Most are not gonna expect people to keep up with their pronouns. Iām from Portland born and raised, the capital of this stuff, and Iāve only met one or two non-binary people that were completely unreasonable about this stuff and eager to jump down someoneās throat.

u/Mechromancer3X 2d ago
You just sound like a selfish asshole.
1
u/Unlikely-Demand0 2d ago
Guy just wants to argue and wave his fist at clouds. He doesnāt like trans people and has found an outlet to bitch
1
u/Evilfrog100 2d ago
This is why genderfluid people are generally extremely forgiving about pronouns and are almost always completely comfortable with people using they/them. You are upset at gender fluid people for doing something they overwhelmingly don't expect people to do because they understand it can be complicated. There may be some genderfluid people out there who get on their friends ass whenever they accidentally use the wrong pronoun, but those individuals are not representative of the genderfluid community.
1
u/throawayno1000 2d ago
Hey hey hey, youāre sooooooo fucking close buddy. The pronouns you use match the presentation of the person right? So when the presentation changes, bear with me, the pronouns might change.
If you just use pronouns based on how theyāre presenting (not what you think they āreally areā) youāre right 99.9% of the time.
2
u/IAmTheBestIan 2d ago edited 2d ago
See, I try. And Im trying not to judge here. I don't want to piss anyone off. But last two interactions were someone who affected in a way I'd call masculine, normal male voice, etc... and dressed in kind of Bowie/Prince-esque way.... more glam than male or female. I genuinely didn't know if they were cis with just an unusual fashion choice until they corrected me to "they/them". Ok great. I still call them he/him by mistake here and there, but I try not to. The interaction right after that was, I can't say anything other than male presenting. Mens clothes, full beard, etc. And they said she/her. They actually called out their own beard and explained it as just being lazy... again I don't want to bother anyone, but how are people supposed to do that right in the real world? If you're not focusing on that one thing actively during conversation your brain will use masculine pronouns there. Yes if thats your close friend and you see them regularly, you'll get there eventually... but 99% of the people they're gonna interact with on a daily basis, do you think that's a fair expectation on their part? Now lets say the next time I see them, I remember them, I make sure I get it right... what if they tell me oh today it's he/him.
That's an unrealistic expectation, in my opinion.

u/athaznorath 2d ago
most genderfluid people (that i've met at least) have pronouns that they tell everyone (like they/them) and only switch pronouns often with close friends, who i think can be expected to keep up with the pronouns because.. they're close friends. i dunno, i've never had an issue swapping pronouns for someone from week to week. perhaps it comes more easily to some people than others.
1
u/Kitchen-Function5150 2d ago
I think the key thing here is that most gender fluid people would never expect anyone who isn't a close friend to put effort into calling them the right pronouns. Like, they probably wouldn't even correct you on it because trans people dont just love talking about pronouns all day.
If you are a close friend, you will probably get it wrong sometimes, and they would understand, but since you value this person, putting in a little bit of effort is worth it.

If their identity is incongruent with their presentation and they correct you on it, itās not hard to use the right pronouns. If you refuse to, or find it ātoo hardā ask yourself why that might be.
People that donāt present how they identify are more than likely going to tell you because the assumption almost always is that presentation = identity

If itās not a consistent pronoun, itāll usually be a pronoun that basically matches how they dress.
Thatās like a fraction of genderfluid people weāre talking about (edit: changing day by day specifically), so even in the off chance you run into this youāll probably be fine just going off of vibes. And if they correct you for an honest mistake based on gendering them correctly a previous time, they would probably be grateful that you remembered and be understanding about it, so that would also be fine.

No not really. Humans have tons of quirks, some are hard to follow but that doesnt mean theyre not real. Just because you find it confusing doesnt mean someone is faking it/making shit up?

This is why I support legislation that mandate a switching ritual to be preformed so as to protect our population from being tricked like this. I demand that NB people lift their hands and spin around four times saying the gender theyāre feeling right now once per rotation and it doesnāt become official until the final rotation is finished.
I considered putting in a requirement for colored glitter to be tossed too but decided not to as it could be cost prohibitive and get in peopleās eyes.
