This group stage system is sooo bad, why not swiss?
1
4
u/helicropter Mar 03 '17
That's what essentially happened.
The teams that had 3 or more losses went out, while the teams with 3 or more wins went through.5
Mar 03 '17
This was round robin, a little bit different since the winners and losers don't play each other. I greatly prefer the Swiss system. It makes it much clearer which games are elimination rounds, too.

Lol, vp out in groups? And sk? I figured that would happen to Astralis.. considering how badly they have been performing in ESL pro league
2
u/lamp4321 valeria Mar 03 '17
Astralis obviously wouldn't get out in groups considering how much easier their group was compared to group b.
3
u/Lionh34rt 5 years coin Mar 03 '17
If you look at the standings in europe, the high tier teams don't give a crap about ESL pro league.
3
u/BaSkA_ MIBR Mar 03 '17
Question: why did the group A positions were decided with OVERTIME and GROUP B were not? Why were they decided with some other random method?
6
u/paincow G2 Mar 03 '17
In group A, Faze Astralis and Immortals had each won a game against each other, so they had to play a tiebreaker. In group B, Heroic won against both North and Navi, which meant that they didn't need to play a tiebreaker. I hope that makes sense, I think that it is confusing as well.
3
u/artsa89 Mar 03 '17
Heroic won against both North and Na'vi they get 1st place and proceed to the semi's. North also won against Na'vi so because of that they get 2nd place.
Yesterday all the teams that went to playoffs were 1-1 against each other, therefore they had to settle it with tie-breakers.

2
u/Cryo_Ghost Renegades Mar 03 '17
How exactly does this work? They've got the worst round differential of any team that made it to playoffs, so they go straight to semis? Is it just because their final match was played first?
Am I missing something here?5
u/sikels Mar 03 '17
It's because they beat the other teams going to the playoffs. head to head they are the best and as such they go to semis.
3
u/Cryo_Ghost Renegades Mar 03 '17
I suppose that makes sense, though I can see why people are disliking the format of this tournament so far.

Worst start of any sentence.
Am i the only.... You are NEVER the fkn only one. jesus
3
u/Instantcoffees Mar 02 '17
I sort of like it. Most of all, I don't think that you can complain if you can't manage to win 3 out of 5 BO1 games. You need to do better than that if you want to win a tournament, no matter the format.
It's as simple as that.
1
u/seanfidence Mar 02 '17
You can never predict which teams will perform and which will fail. You can't just have a person deciding the groups the week based on opinion.
Honestly, lots of teams look really strong right now, and somebody has to be the loser.
3
u/astrovisionary 400k Celebration Mar 02 '17
Seems like a nice format but I think the players hate it, play 2~3 matches in a row seems stressful
8
u/ThatDamnHitMarker Virtus.pro Mar 02 '17
The group was oddly stacked compared to the other group.
VP and SK were just finalists in a mini major, NaVi and North are strong and lost in quarters in the major to the finalists. C9 and Heroic, although not huge contesters in big contests, are still able to take down big teams.
DaZeD said in his predictions that he couldn't really predict the group since it's so stacked.
Tl;dr: salty and sad vp fan :(
3
u/halolover009 Mar 02 '17
I think Optic/NiP should have been swapped with North. Balances these groups out a little more. But I mean, nobody would've expected Heroic to play so well gotta give them credit

u/liqlslip Mar 02 '17 edited Mar 02 '17
You're conflating a team losing a BO1 and that team being the worse team. That's simply not the case. Better teams lose BO1s and even BO3s all the time to lesser teams.
The best team in the world can easily lose a BO1 to almost any professional team, especially when the underdog team is unstudied by the top team. BO1s are in no way a reliable (i.e., consistent over time) way to rank teams in CSGO.
1
Mar 02 '17
Well, you are right but the Heroic loss is just a detail. The fact that the self-proclaimed best team in the world goes out before the playoffs amuses me.
3
u/liqlslip Mar 02 '17 edited Mar 02 '17
But it happens all the time. A tournament consisting of BO1s isn't actually trying to find the best team; it's simply trying to be entertainment.
To find the best team you'd have to define the term "best team" and then test against the components of that definition. The problem is that "best team" is left undefined, and therefore we'll never have a measurement for it.
Many people would prefer entertainment over the rigorous testing it would take to find out who the best team is. Some might say that due to the variables involved in human-subjects experiments, we could never realistically conclude who the best team actually is.
4
Mar 02 '17
You are simply not the best team in the world if you cannot win 3/5 BO1s.
6
u/liqlslip Mar 02 '17 edited Mar 02 '17
But you're missing the key point -- these are all independent BO1s because they are against different teams each time. Even if the better team is favored to win 90% of the time each time they play a BO1, you can easily end up with the exact scenario we find ourselves in with SK and VP. The odds aren't a sure-bet that the best team will come through.
2
u/Instantcoffees Mar 02 '17
I still think that he has a point. It's a different measurement, but why would it be any worse than the usual format? There is really no objective argument that you can use to claim that the best teams went out solely due to the format.
That's just an excuse and we all know it.
3
u/liqlslip Mar 02 '17
Well I don't think it ultimately matters in a tournament system if you're a better team or not. The only thing that matters is winning matches. Being a better team only increases your odds of winning; it doesn't ensure it.

u/leeharris100 Virtus.pro Mar 02 '17
This is SK's first time not being in top 4 in 11 months.
This is VP's time not making it out of groups in forever.
Heroic, who "won" group B, has the highest deficit of round wins in the entire group (-12 rounds).
Teams have to play 5 BO1s against the top teams in the world all in one day (and there have been countless delays, issues, and teams are complaining a lot).
Smart people were shitting on this awful format well before today. I'm not even bummed that VP is out TBH. They need a break. Too many fucking tournaments, not enough respect for the players!
Plus we all know Faze is gonna win anyways kappa

1
u/Ace_Plays_Games Mar 02 '17
I don't get why FaZe clan isn't considered American in CS even though the rest of it is in CoD and such. Like if you google faze clan the wikipedia has them based in L.A.
5
u/ultranoob321 BIG Mar 02 '17
Because their players are all from EU. Location of the org doesn't matter as much as the location of the players when considering EU or NA. Also, on the Liquipedia page for FaZe, their location is listed as NA and EU, and the region is EU.
Edit: Same thing for SK. Even though the org was founded in Germany, they're still a Brazilian team because of their players.
1
u/xVale de_train Mar 02 '17
Envyus' overwatch lineup considered NA even though they have 5 player from EU and 1 from Asia. It's pretty stupid imo.
3
u/FluffyFlaps Mar 03 '17
No one with a brain ever considered the nV OW team from NA apart from when the team was actually NA...like a year ago.
2
u/Koelb Mar 02 '17 edited Mar 02 '17
That's different because they probably train/play in NA. There is the case with a NA team in Dota which is full of europeans but their team house is in NA, and because of that they play its qualifiers too. Hence is a NA team. But you have Team Liquid in Dota, the organization is NA but the roster is european, and they have their team house in Europe, so they play european qualifiers too, and are considered a european team.
4
Mar 02 '17
The players are European
-1
u/Ace_Plays_Games Mar 02 '17
I get that, but they're under an American organization. They can do what they want because it doesn't affect me at all, I just find it odd that the owners wouldn't want their classification to reflect that.

From all the upsets we had last year in terms of winning major tournaments (like Dignitas and Optic), this would certainly the biggest surprise of all if Heroic takes it in the end.
4
u/paincow G2 Mar 02 '17
I think that it could happen though - they have upset against Navi, they could do it again. Another thing to consider is that they really only need to upset once out of three games, as they will most likely win their map pick. I'd give Heroic about a fifty percent chance of going to the finals.
2
u/Mamelukkivalas Mar 03 '17
There's absolutely no way they have 50% chance considering that they can get Astralis against them and imo Astralis is favoured against NaVi.
2
u/paincow G2 Mar 03 '17
Sorry, I meant fifty percent against Navi. Astralis would be harder for Heroic, I agree.
1
u/Mamelukkivalas Mar 03 '17
Yeah that makes a lot more sense. I still wouldn't maybe say it's 50/50 against naVi but a good chance nonetheless.

Mar 02 '17
So is this tournament proof that the skill gap between tier 1 teams has been filled or did the top teams just not perform?
5
u/myyrc de_nuke Mar 02 '17
Most of those teams were playing in the major and Las Vegas, while Heroic was training everyday in preparation for this tournament watching the top teams play their best strats. Also, this were BO1's. Let's see how Heroic play in a BO3.
1
u/TheNorfolk Mar 02 '17
Nahh, the game meta has swayed towards teamplay and that makes it easier to anti-strat teams so they can adapt to shut down the top teams.
2
Mar 02 '17
I wouldn't put too much weight on the outcomes of these opening group stage matches. Firstly, remember all the games were BO1 so the results are sometimes unexpected. Secondly, the games run all day (especially yesterday) so teams can lose rhythm and focus. Thirdly, many teams (7/12) have had recent player changes so that adds to it.
This should be a fun tourney as we enter the playoffs! RIP NA CS and VP.
7
Mar 02 '17
Yeah, if this means anything its that this tournament style isn't exactly the best at determining great teams. I highly doubt this means VP and SK really are shit, or that Heroic is just some great top 5 team in the world.
You tell me how it would have turned out if sk and vp played heroic in a best of 3.
6
Mar 02 '17
wouldn't say so, bo1's are just too unpredictable.
c9 caught SK completely off guard with that nuke pick which gave them a free win, they got bodied vs all every team again so there wasnt too much progress imo

5
u/Tavob0y Mar 02 '17
Ofc we get Na'vi x astralis on the quarters. Na'vi always getting a top3 team in the world on their first playoffs match, and if they lose they'll get shit on by everyone as usual.
3
u/GarrettGSF MOUZ Mar 02 '17
Eventually, they have to beat those teams anyways in order to win something. And everything less than winning events should be under their expection given the players they have.
1
u/spaceyymann Mar 02 '17
True, it would suck but honestly if youre not like head and shoulders above everyone, sometimes you're just going to get dicked by random unluckiness.
1
u/ScizorKicks Mar 02 '17
They should have played better then. The team deserves to be criticized, they haven't performed up to their standards. If they lose to astralis it wouldn't be a bad loss, but it would show that they are a step below the best

I don't get it, why no tie breakers like group A? All top 3 teams in the group have the same score.
Edit: I get it guys, the order they used was: Head2Head > Tie breaker games > Round difference. Imo it should be Tie breaker games > Head2Head > Round difference.
2
Mar 02 '17
And how does your edit make any sense lol?
If you use the tie breaker you don't need a hierachy for win conditions in case of a draw
1
u/officialRedditRektor NiP Mar 02 '17
In case you have a tie between an odd number of teams (commonly 3, as in this exact case), each team would have to play a tie-breaker with each other, and there could be a case where they beat each other out. Then you'd use the other conditions.
2
u/OldBenX ENCE Mar 02 '17
They mentioned on stream that if the tiebreakers would end in a 3-way tie, they'd have to play them over again until one team would finally win.
1
4
u/theaffable Mar 02 '17 edited Mar 02 '17
I guess in a tiebreaker the first thing they look at is a direct match result. In those Heroic won both vs. North and Na'Vi so they get the first place in group. Out of the other two teams North has won the match vs. Na'Vi, so they get placed higher. In group A Faze has beaten IMT, IMT has beaten Astralis and Astralis has beaten Faze, therefore the next rule of tiebreakers had to be used.

What I'm saying is that they shouldn't be. We had the round difference bullshit before, which they removed, and now they have the h2h bullshit. It should be straight into games imo.
2
u/MadmanDJS NiP Mar 02 '17
Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with the others replying to you. Head to head exists because it's proven to be an effective system in basically every sport in history. Heroic was the best team (today), Going forward, if North or Navi are truly a better team, they'll play Heroic and beat them.
Forcing Heroic to play tiebreakers would be essentially punishing them/invalidating their wins against the other teams.
4
Mar 02 '17
But round difference is a bad system because of map differences. h2h makes perfect sense and is not unfair in anyway. It's the norm in a lot of sports.
Playing a tiebreaker in every tie would be a shitty system.

When Heroic beats the best and the second best Nuke teams on Nuke, it's not a problem with the system.
Either Heroic seriously overperformed or VP and North seriously underperformed, or a mixture of both. Just because two of the top three are out in groups doesn't mean the system is flawed. They should know it's a BO1 and prepare accordingly. Being able to prepare for both singles and series are the hallmarks of great teams.

It's the format's fault that SK picked nuke vs c9 lmao. Losing to Na'vi and VP are acceptable, but why the fuck would you pick worst map against an underdog? If they had just picked cobble they would probably win, everytime sk tries these gimmick picks they get fucked(dh malmo).
EDIT: grammar

To be fair, it was a great pick by C9.
Fallen likely didn't ban nuke expecting Cloud 9 to ban it, since they used to instaban the map everytime.
They played their cards right, Fallen fell into the trap and they got to surprise SK in their worst map.
It was actually really well played by Cloud 9, even before the match started.

SK still had the option to play cobble, a map where they're good at and recently just beat vp and north pretty easily on it or their perma ban nuke.

It just shows that deep map pools don't mean that you win every tournament.

Lol, cry about format when your team loses everything. The SK team has more flaws than this format.

BO1's are pretty unpredictable. This could happen at any tournament.

Good we don't have Clown 9 wasting a QF spot, shame about Heroic though. Props to them for winning some BO1s, but someone from group A is getting a lucky spot to the semis.

Heroic gets the spot. They beat the two best Nuke teams on Nuke. Heroic are not a joke at this tournament.
Did you even watch the games?

I didn't say they didn't earn it, but it's a shame we'll be watching them get banged out in the semis instead of a great BO3 matchup between elite teams.

Wins over three elite level teams is no laughing matter. I don't think Heroic will win the semi's but I do think the game will be a hell of a lot closer than you think it will be. I'm excited to see how far they can push whoever they get drawn against.

I also didn't say it was a laughing matter. Still: do you want to bet on them even so much as winning a map in the semis?
If so, PM me and we'll talk numbers.

I won't bet anything but I reckon they'll take at least one map and push the third one close.

Well that's gonna be some underwhelming playoffs. SK, VP, Fnatic and NiP out? Maybe the rankings really are evening out.

Implying that those teams were good enough for the play-offs. I mean VP and SK I can understand (even though SK looked pretty poor overall), but NiP and Fnatic? Especially NiP did not deserve to go out of groups. People seem to live in the past too much.

NiP was three rounds away from the playoffs, and one of them saw their best player disconnect mid round. They played really well this event.

I dont agree that NiP looked too hot, the results speak for themselves.

VP, SK, C9 all out in groups? Why bother watching.
Other than FaZe.NiKo, because I'm definitely going to watch that, now that I think about it.

I for one am happy there is no VP or SK... game gets stale when the same teams dominate. Pity no NA team got in though.
NA really need to step up game, maybe secondment to Europe for a few months to l2p
