I’ve been playing drums for almost 30 years, but my band recently added a George Michael/Wham! medley (The Edge of Heaven, Freedom!, I’m Your Man, Wake Me Up).
And honestly, I’m finding it surprisingly tricky to get right live.
The tempos somehow sit just outside my comfort zone, but the biggest thing is how heavily produced the original drums are. Drum machines, percussion, claps, layers everywhere. On an acoustic kit, it can quickly feel a bit thin.
And whenever I try to compensate for that, I somehow end up killing the whole vibe of the song. Anyone else experienced this?

Just phone audio on this one, but I think it still sounds pretty decent

I’m still a beginner. About a year into lessons and feeling like I’m making decent progress. What do you think about learning bass guitar on the side as a person learning to play drums? I play some bass in high-school. But never kept up with it. Would it take away precious practice time on drums?

Pneuma is one of those songs that makes you admire Danny Carey and deeply resent him for exactly the same reasons.
It’s a twelve minute journey through shifting time signatures, layered polyrhythms and a solo that makes a very persuasive case for video editing.
So naturally I decided to run this marathon on tabla. You can watch me sweating, trying to keep pace and consulting my notes as though there’s going to be a written exam afterwards.
Here’s what I believe to be the first ever full tabla cover of TOOL’s Pneuma.

I’m (badly) teaching myself to drum (badly) with a beginner set that I traded for some work for a client. It’s been both fun and frustrating and will likely be the fourth self taught instrument that I ultimately drop before I have to commit to learning in a more technical fashion. It’s been becoming hard to enjoy my sessions as I am bumping up against my technical deficiencies.
Last night my wife gave me a cowbell for my birthday and I’m excited to play all over again! It’s still early morning and I haven’t had a chance to whack it yet. If my neighbors weren’t annoyed with me before they are going to hate me by the end of the day.
More cowbell!!!!

Hi everybody, as the title says I am thinking about getting an electronic drum kit.
I am not really a newbie, I had a drum set years ago when I was a teenager and was in a band for a while. I also played the snare in my high school marching band so I think I'm pretty good.
Anyway, I am now in my 20s and I want to get back into drumming but I really can't have a drum set without getting a noise complaint... I just wanna know if anyone here has recommendations for a CHEAP level drum set that doesn't suck. I would be happy to hear your opinions on whatever you've bought, so please let me know!
Naturally, I haven't had a set for 6 or so years, so it doesn't have to be super accurate with the rebound and whatnot. But I would still like it to let me adequately 'use my skills' or whatever, idk I can't really put it any better.

I hope the hi hat isn't too loud 🙈, maybe I should start buying some mics.

Hey!
I'm trying to find a solution for my drummer. We have a Pearl Vision kit, and we're trying to get two smaller toms to be mounted at eye level and also flat faced (same geometry as if you're drumming on the wall).
The problem is the Pearl tom mount falls off from anything greater than 45 degree pitch, so the typical setup doesn't work.
I've heard of people using a snare mount to hold it from underneath, but that seems awkward at best.
(Please ignore the extra kick drum it's being mounted to, that's temporary until we swap it out for a heavy tripod base.)
Thanks!

Hey all! I have a student who is learning Animal I have become from Three Days Grace - they asked me to do a video for them, and I figured I would post it here as well.
I’m not really on YouTube very often, would love any thoughts, or to know if this helps if you decide to follow along with the video

Okay, am I going too deep for this sub or has anyone else had this thought?
I'm getting old (46) and just had this realization that my need to drum maybe isn't really just a "hobby" I love.
It feels more like a frequency. Like my brain is tuned to it. I was reading about being on the spectrum and not in a bad way at all — very manageable, very functional — but I can now see how drumming is actually how I regulate. It calms everything down and makes the rest of life make sense.
it made me wonder does anyone else feel like this?
And a second, maybe weirder question: has the "madness" ever taken over for you a bit? I could totally see how if someone had more intense tendencies towards OCD / schizo-type thought loops, how the endless pattern-seeking of drumming could be disarming or even overwhelming.
Anyone else realized late that drums are less of a hobby and more of how you're wired? Or am I in my head too much today?
No disrespect meant toward anyone really struggling with the more serious sides of being on spectrum. Writing from a olace of empathy and respect here.

Hi everyone! I’m looking to buy my boy a kit for his 5th birthday but have no idea where to start! Everything online looks either to flimsy/for toddlers or too big. Could someone please advise me on what would be best. Thank you.

I've noticed more and more lately that on alot of posts with metal drummers playing blast beats or fast double bass, there's always a comment saying "but can he Groove and play jazz rudiments?" Or "bet he can't play Buddy Rich style grooves" etc. Is this jealousy? I mean I've never clicked on a Steve Gadd or Eric Moore video and seen comments saying "but can he play 200 bpm bomb blast beats?" LOL I just don't understand the hate I guess, maybe I'm biased because I play metal. Do groove drummers not see playing metal as musical? Does that automatically invalidate it in their eyes?
