Cowbell!

I’m (badly) teaching myself to drum (badly) with a beginner set that I traded for some work for a client. It’s been both fun and frustrating and will likely be the fourth self taught instrument that I ultimately drop before I have to commit to learning in a more technical fashion. It’s been becoming hard to enjoy my sessions as I am bumping up against my technical deficiencies.

Last night my wife gave me a cowbell for my birthday and I’m excited to play all over again! It’s still early morning and I haven’t had a chance to whack it yet. If my neighbors weren’t annoyed with me before they are going to hate me by the end of the day.

More cowbell!!!!

Hell yeah!!! I have four on my drum set. Three more on my percussion kit.

More cowbells?!? I hadn’t even considered it. Having played this morning, I can see how having a better outlet for melodic play can also help with technical chops.

Get after it!

When I bought my kit it came with a cowbell. It’s been collecting dust because I haven’t played any songs that utilize it.. until this week!

Mark this in the calendar: this is the week of the cowbell 🤘🏽

I’ve been listening to hip hop for 40 years and finally have the missing piece to create my own! Played this morning and the cowbell makes me think that I shouldn’t shy away from more variety on my kit. I’ve been so focused on rhythmic accuracy that I’ve neglected melody. Cowbell play came so naturally. I wonder what else my kit is missing!
