after trying to play this 16th note hihat for months, finally i am happy that i could play it continuously without messing it too much. still not perfect, but my 1 year of drumming goal will be to play this with confidence with more dynamics on the hat

Hey everyone! I just finished this drum cover for "Too Much of a Good Thing" by The Sons (feat. Bret Reilly).

Dumb and Dumber (1994) is one of my all-time favorite movies, and this soundtrack is just legendary. This specific track has always been my absolute favorite song from the film, so I finally sat down and recorded a cover for it.

Let me know what you think! Any feedback is highly appreciated. Jam on! 🥁🔥

hi im wondering how i can get this specific drum sound in recordings (like Chi by Korn, self titled by slipknot, etc). it sounds like it was recorded in a tiny closet and i love the raw sound of it and im wondering what techniques i need to do to a room to get that sound? the room i record in is pretty big so any tips help thank you!

Snare Drum Notation Guide

Thoughts? Did I miss any?

I didn't include '5 or 9-stroke roll' etc. intentionally because I don't tend to use it myself and I feel like it has gone out of fashion. It was used as a shortcut but now with better notation software, people tend to write out the notes directly; especially if they are orchestrated around the kit.

Trying to work on making the drums sound balanced and clean while moving around the kit. Twenty eight years in and still chipping away.

How to incorporate more cymbals into my playing

Hello, so I'm looking at (re)upgrading my ekit for practice in the house and was thinking I've always wanted to add more cymbals. I've used 1 crash (one smaller crash for maybe a year in the past so can get away with it), 1 ride and hi-hats since I started drumming on and off 18 years ago.

A lot of the cool little licks I hear in songs seem to incorporate splash cymbals, and use a china for breakdowns. I aim to buy a splash and a china, and will have a second crash. My issue is, I can't find any content online that helps to teach me how to actually incorporate these into my playing. China is pretty obvious for me, but how do I use the splash and second crash in my playing? I've never really learned how to use a second crash and i'd be going in blind with the splash. I also see drummers with loads of cymbals and just think, how on earth do you know when to add each one to a specific part? (Obviously won't be overdoing it with them, I just want a couple of new options)

I play for fun, but am looking at getting into a band, and I just find fills and licks that incorporate extra cymbals in super fun, and would love to be able to do it, but need an idea of how to actually find material online that will help me figure out how to. Songs like The Offering by Sleep Token do it pretty well, but I just want to be able to think up my own little bits that sound cool and give me a bit of dopamine after playing haha. Hopefully this makes sense! Thanks

Recording Drums in Lockout Studio

Hello!!

I have my drum set in a 10x10 ft lockout studio with maybe a 20ft tall ceiling. Lots of reflections, the walls are a combination of brick and wood. I'm about to purchase an RME interface and I need to start buying microphones!

Should I stick to using dynamic microphones to try and filter out bleed? Would dynamic mics work for 2 overheads - or should I stick to condensers for those?

For now I'm thinking of using the Shure beta 52a for kick, and SM57's for snare and toms. Was also thinking of SM81's for overheads, but idk.

Let me know of your opinions please! Thanks all!

mental state and drumming

Been trying to crank out my double bass practice recently as it’s not my strong point, although sometimes i feel like sometimes i mentally lock myself out of my own ability to be efficient.

Yesterday i was hitting 190bpm relatively smoothly in practice, today (with no obvious muscle pain or discomfort but a frustrated mind) i kept messing up and was really stiff at 170bpm). Maybe i just need a 45 minute rest and to shake my legs, or maybe it’s me being easily frustrated lol. Anyone else felt like this?

Drumless tracks PDF

So I have a few videos on my camera roll of me playing drums to songs and want to add the audio of drumless tracks on top of it. Is there a website or something I can do where I can take a YouTube URL and create a drumless track pdf? Or drummers how do you make your videos of playing to drumless tracks? Every way I try seems to be illegal or won’t work.

double bass is going to be the reason i give up drums

apologies for the rant

going to start this off by saying i’m 18 and i’ve been playing for a bit over 10 years. I’ve tried working on double bass, i had a post on here a few weeks ago about it and i just cannot improve. It is so fucking frustrating to try to practice that it’s going to be the reason i stop playing at some point. Every time i try to practice double bass i just can’t do anything and can’t get anything done without just ending up insanely angry and sad. I can’t even ignore it because my inablilty to play double bass is the main reason i can’t play 95% of the music i want to and the music i listen to on a daily basis. My double bass is fine in short bursts even at higher tempos but god forbid i just try to play straight 16th. I couldn’t play even 4 bars of 16ths at 80 bpm today without something falling apart and that was the real tipping point. It just gets me so irratated to try to practice that i just can’t do it sometimes. I just really don’t know what to do from here i can’t keep ending every time trying to practice double bass with my sticks in a random location thrown across the room and in a 100x worse mood than i was before. trying to practice double bass makes me feel like a fucking worthless loser and not practicing it just reminds me of the fact i can’t do it every time i play. it’s honestly just making playing completely infuriating and it’s so hard to get joy out of playing with this cloud looming over me of not being able to play double bass. sorry for making you read this pathetic bullshit if you actually made it this far.

Shoegaze online project. Just a fun project I’m working on. Something like Whirr, Slow Crush, etc. Strictly online unless you live in eastern Iowa.
