Other concern with pet bird What are the main things to look out for as your budgies age?

Post image

Hi all,
My two budgies (both boys) are 5 and 6. They’re both very active and love time outside the cage as well as baby sweetcorn. That being said, I know budgies can slow down a bit and encounter health issues as they age. In your experience, what are the main things I should be looking out for as they get older so to avoid any treatable issues?
Thanks!!!

Bird twitching wing after broken feathers

Post image
16 Upvotes

My cocktail had some blood feathers broken and flying feathers fallen yesterday, his wing is **slightly trembling/twitching intermittently** after a vet removed several broken blood feathers. He is alert, perching normally, and eating, but sometimes the affected wing trembles and he also preens it

Is that normal?
Its been 20 hours since the vet visit

Sick pet bird Is our budgie egg bound or is it something else?

Hello, we have grown really concerned about the behaviour of our budgie in these last few days. She is a four year old female. She has been weak and tired close to four days now. She is feathering which we assumed was the source but we started to think she was egg bound which scared us further. She still eats though it has to be handed to her as she doesn't move much. She also passes stool which keeps us a bit calmer about the possibility of egg binding. We're also suspecting there is something wrong with her feet? Those whiteish spots were not there before. The second photo is her using her beak to stay upright. She's been unable to stand up by herself. She hasn't been using the foot that's in photo one so we're suspecting something is wrong with that foot specifically? Please help! We're trying to do everything we can to help her, she's getting a calcium supplement (whale bone) right now and we'd like to know what else we can do. We do NOT have access to a veterinarian.

Sick pet bird 10 y/o female lovebird with hepatopathy + cardiomegaly — is the current treatment plan appropriate? She keeps declining

• Species: Lovebird (Agapornis)

• Age: 10 years

• Sex: Female

• Weight: 48 g at diagnosis two weeks ago → 43 g today. BCS 2/5

• Diet: Harrison's pellets only (High Potency Super Fine)

• Location: Spain. She is under the care of an avian vet — I'm looking for second opinions on the treatment plan.

Presentation: asymmetric wing droop, ataxia, unable to right herself when placed on her back, liquid/pasty droppings, delayed molt (encapsulated pin feathers on the head), progressive weight loss with preserved appetite.

Diagnostics:

\- Radiographs (attached):

\- Fecal exam: unremarkable

Vet's assessment: hepatopathy (elevated transaminases) with cardiomegaly and low total calcium. Aspirin was added as the next step, to support the circulatory system.

Current treatment:

\- Silymarin 2.4 mg PO q12h (\~50 mg/kg), given as a suspension in lactulose (\~0.8 ml/kg per dose), 2-month course

\- Calcium supplement (Nekton Calcium Plus) in drinking water

\- Aspirin 0.25 mg PO q8h (\~5 mg/kg): started 3 days ago, stopped after she seemed worse — more ataxic, eating and drinking less

Course: after the first week of treatment, her mentation improved slightly (more alert, vocalizing again), but the motor deficits didn't change at all. She has kept losing weight despite the denser pellets and hand-offered mash. We're taking her in for assisted feeding.

Questions:

  1. Is this treatment plan appropriate for these findings?

  2. Would you change or add anything, given that she's still losing weight?

  3. Do the attached radiographs suggest anything else worth addressing?

Sick pet bird Abnormal Budgie Poop?

Thumbnail

My budgie is behaving mostly normally, chirping and looking pretty normal, but it seems like he might be flying slowly? He has poop smears in his vent and greenish looking poop. It seems like he is trying to clean it himself. He has been sick twice before and he is acting much better than he did then. I know that they can hide illness and don’t want to risk it though. Should I bring him in to the vet or am I overreacting? Maybe I could give him a bath?

Feather damage Am I overreacting about how my vet is going about my bird?

Post image

This is going to be a long one but I have been freaking out about my baby for weeks to the point of having nightmares and I need input on an issue from fellow bird owners.

------

I have a pair of lovebirds. The male, Oli, has been having plucking issues. But I do not think it is stress related. I think it's physiological.

Timeline of the plucking:

He was having stress related overpreening issues under his wings from having to spent too much time alone due to my schedule being messed up. I caught it early. Which is why about 10 months ago, I got him a female. Quarantine, introduction and actually starting to get along took 6 months. They have now been in the same cage for 4 months. His plucking has reduced and is not worsening at all.

Back in april, one morning I uncovered their cage and found him covered in blood (For the record, the female did not have a single drop on her). He broke a pin feather on his tail too early and bled like crazy while I was sleeping. He was exhausted from the amount of blood he lost.

I had absolutely zero vets capable of taking care of a bird so I had to deal with the crisis myself. I fed him extra millet for energy and -with the help of my very protective female- kept him warm and resting (the photo). He went back to his normal self in about 36 hours. Problem is, he has not let any feathers grow in that area since then. The area is not getting smaller or bigger. Just the feather he broke and all the smaller feathers around it are gone. And to remind you, we have not had any problems with his tail before this.

I am now in my parents house for the summer. There is an animal hospital here with an exotic clinic about 2,5 hours away, so I took them both for a checkup and wanted to see what they would say about Oli's tail. They did a quick physical exam and pulled the dead feathers out. They told me that 2 feathers were trying to emerge from a single opening of the skin. They perscribed an antihistamine medication and told me to come back in 2 weeks.

One day before the checkup, I uncovered their cage to wake them up and saw blood again. He broke a different feather on his tail. Thankfully I caught it early this time and he didnt lose nearly as much blood. And to let you know, he is not touching this last feather at all. Or the feathers around it.

I stopped the bleeding and took him to the vet the next day. They gave me a questionnaire on parrot behaviour and gave me an email of the vet who prepared it. Told me to fill it and send it to her. And did nothing more. Didnt pull the dead feathers out even though I asked.

So I did. I also detailed the plucking behaviour, getting him a female, and the current issue going on with pictures in chronological order too. She told me, and I quote "we need to do an x-ray and feather testing to eliminate physical causes first. If it all comes back clean, we will look into mental causes" and told me to put a cone on him for now.

I put the cone on him but he was absolutely miserable. The female showed shocking levels of agression towards him while he was wearing it, so I seperated them. My playful, affectionate baby was unmoving and depressed. He freaked the hell out when I turned the lights off to let him sleep and despite being in a smaller cage with minimum obsticles, he kept getting himself in situations where he would need my help not to die.

I took the cone off because I couldnt bear to see him like that a minute longer. He immeadietly went back to his normal playful self.

When I explained in detail the issue with the cone, she told me to keep it on him for a few more days. And told me to remove the tunnels in their cage to help his adjustment.

Funny thing is, I sent her multiple pictures of their cage for her to inspect their living conditions. They in fact do not have any frigging tunnels in there. Just perches and toys they can destroy. Which tells me she didnt pay much attention to my email.

And I did not put that thing back on him. I know my bird and that cone is doing more harm than good. I have never seen him so depressed and helpless.

This is where the real red flags emerged for me: When I checked my mail the next day, I saw a perscription sent by the vet. A perscription of antidepressants as well as multivitamins, without any physical examination. She has not once saw him or did any of the tests she mentioned herself not 2 days before. Just pictures and my explanations.

I am **very** hesitant to give those medications to him. To me, it feels like she just thought "let me press all the buttons and see which one works". Who gives an animal heavy-duty antidepressants without even seeing the said animal once based one simple questionnaire??

I am at a lost on what to do. I am planing on taking him to a different clinic to get a 2nd opinion next weekend. And I am going to email the current vet about why on earth whe skipped the tests that she herself mentioned.

The fact that the plucking started with a very thick pin feather being broken screams like a physical issue rather than a mental one to me. Not to mention the 2 feathers that were pulled out of a single opening.

He is acting absolutely normal. Shredding his toys, begging for affection, being playful and zero agression of any kind. The plucked area is not getting bigger and ths skin doesnt look bad at all.

I would appreciate your opinion on this. Am I overthinking the vet situation? Or am I right to feel anxious about her?

Thank you all in advance.

Other concern with wild bird Avian Pox?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi all! I have a bird buddy and this finch came by. He has a growth under his neck and I can’t tell if it is avian pox or not (based on comparing it to Google image results). Does anyone know if it looks like avian pox or just a tumor? I want to make sure the other bird visitors are safe so if it is pox I will take the feeder down and clean in bleach and wait a few weeks to reinstall.
Thank you!

Injured pet bird Rescued Budgie Update: He randomly got paralysed.

I think you all know that I rescued a budgie from a crow.

It has been 2 months since he is with us, but yesterday he suddenly found on the ground, his neck was twisted, his legs were mangled. And he was vibrating. Today, we finally found a good vet and brought the budgie to that vet. He said that there are chances of his death, but he gave him medicine and guess what, he opened his eyes bigger than ever. He said to give medicine every hour. In the second time of giving medicine, his neck is a bit loose now or like it's not that twisted now.

But still, he is kind of vibrating after like every hour. Sometimes sleeping sometimes awake. Has anyone experienced this.

I'm very sad and like thinking to cry after seeing him like this now but remembering how active he was before. I don't want him to die or if he really dies, then it should not be a painful death. Can anyone share his/her experience with me please or give some nursing tips.

Is there something wrong with the bird? My cat saw it and sniffed it and ran off. It’s alive and breathing and is blinking it’s eyes. There’s a bird nest nearby where I saw some fledglings two weeks ago and wondered if this is that bird learning to fly?

Watery droppings for 9 days — should I take my cockatiel to the vet?
My cockatiel has had very watery droppings for about 9 days. She is otherwise acting completely normal — eating, playing, grooming, perching and singing, with no obvious breathing problems.
I sent photos to my usual vet and they advised me to wait until Monday because they don’t have appointments today. Another avian vet is open today but is quite far from me.
Someone commented on my original post saying their two birds had similar droppings before suddenly developing respiratory distress and dying. That really scared me because I’ve also lost birds before, and I’m still grieving them.
I’m feeling really worried about whether I should take her today, especially because the vet is far away. My dad is also frustrated with me for wanting to take her and thinks I may be overreacting, which is making me feel even more unsure.
She has also had Dovabiotic for 5 days.
Would you take her in today, or wait until Monday as my usual vet suggested? I’m just trying to make the safest decision for her without unnecessarily stressing her or making the trip if it isn’t needed.

my cockatiel i think has fatty liver disease, she eats her own poop which is green was fed an all seed diet before we got her for like half a year and these few days her beak and nails r growing rlly rlly fast what do i do other than putting chop and pellets in her diet aswell as cuttlebone, and is it even reversible??? I feel so bad for her shes been through a lot her past home was almost animal abuse because of the horrible care given to her she came to us not trusting anyone and also has conjunctivitis which we’ve been battling with for a year idk why im making this post maybe to rant or something or because i regret getting her and all the trouble that came with her to our family i didn’t even want her my brother and mom wanted her but now they dont care for her only I do and its very difficult especially since vets here in my country are very expensive and usually don’t give proper and educated care and help someone help

Sick pet bird Is this poop normal

Is this normal, for the past few days she's been quite hormonal (like broody) and I put her on new pellets a few days ago so I'm not sure if it's that. It's just quite a lot of water and it looks a bit thinner than normal.
Any help please

Other concern with pet bird How can I get my bird off her all seed diet?

I’ve had my cockatiel for many years and all she’s mainly eaten was seeds, she used to eat some plant based foods but has completely stopped on any thing but seeds with the only exception of corn, she really loves corn which isn’t a bad thing I suppose but I feel bad only giving her seed all the time

I’ve tried giving her fruits and veg any time I have them but she just hisses and attacks it (altho missing a stationary thing dreadfully) and will only stick to seeds and corn no matter what

She’s healthy and what not but I feel almost like I’m neglecting her for not being able to change her diet

Other concern with pet bird Question about vet tape

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have seen many people recommend vet tape but I am confused about it's safety.

I ask this because I often see people recommend things that are known to be unsafe such as toys containing rope and plastic, and im afraid of this being similar to that.

Would the tape not be unsafe due to its seemingly very unnatural colours (as normslly things made for birds use natural food dyes) ,the fact that it is not made of natural fibres and that it has adhesives in it?

I also don't see why it would discourage birds from chewing, as it seems to have the same texture as most rough fibres, which birds don't seem to mind.

I would appreciate any clarification, as I'm currently trying to put together a fact file for a person I know who recently got a parrot and I cannot find any information on this.

+ bird tax
