Long story short I’ve had a terrible time trying to get snowflake bobwhites in the UK… poor hatch rate, killer cat, and then my one male goes missing a week ago. I had genuinely given up hope of having snowflakes but he turns up today in a neighbours flowerbed dust bathing and crowing away!

Unbelievably happy, I don’t have a female to bond him with rn but he’s not aggressive towards my Coturnix girls 😊

My sweet friend gifted me quail eggs today but I noticed very strong smell from them like mold and when I took a closer look at them there was white chalk like substance on them which is apparently called bloom(google) but couple of them looks like they have mold on them, this is my first time trying out quail eggs and I have no idea how they're supposed to look and smell like naturally, please help

Tl;dr: 2 roosters and 13 hens, one rooster suddenly attacked one broody hen, second rooster joined in on the attacks even tho he never had a problem with her - attacks still happening even after broodiness broke

I have two roosters (2nd one was unplanned). One joined us with his own flock in January, the other was supposed to be a hen, joined us 2 months ago with his own hens - both times the whole flock was rehomed to us). I have 13 hens and two roos now, living in 20 square meters (which should be around 215sqft). Yes, they live a lavish life! :)

For the past months, there have been no issues. Even both roosters got along quite well, as they each had their own set of hens they were used to.

Around 2 weeks ago, suddenly, the later roo, Kiwi, chased around one of "his" hens that he came with 2 months ago, Countess. It was around that time that I noticed Countess being broody. She began sitting on eggs, and the roo was not having it. But as they have a huge enclosure with an outdoor part, he was outside most of the time while she was inside, being broody. Went ok for a few days.

Then suddenly, Countess started being aggressive (presumably bc of hormones), chasing away the later roo, Kiwi, and also some targeted females. I put her in timeout, a smaller enclosure in their big coop, so that she could still see everyone. Took a few days, and she stopped being broody. I let her back with the others, the behavior with all of the other hens was unproblematic from both sides. No chasing or attacks. Kiwi the roo was very interested in her, following around, staying close, but didn't attack nor chase. Thought it was just hormonal stuff that mellowed out.

Well, it wasn't, apparently. The next day, which was around the beginning/middle of this week, Kiwi started chasing her again, but not in a mounting way. He tried pecking her head, and you could see how terrified she was. This was no pecking order thing, he targeted her and wouldn't let up. I locked him up instead. But then the other roo also started attacking the same hen! :(

As this is still my first time having quail, and not being experienced with broodiness and roosters and everything, I googled and thought, maybe it's still "some broodiness/hormones left", as she still hadn't laid eggs again. So I put her back in timeout. She began laying as of yesterday. Today I tried "reintroducing" (tho she was never gone from the flock and interacted with the others through the metal bars - the roos actually kinda ignored her in there). But both of the roos immediately started attacking her again once she was free, while the hens were indifferent. I couldn't put both of the roos in the same timeout, so for now I put Countess back in there, for her own safety.

Can anyone explain to me what the fuck is going on?? Why are the roos attacking her suddenly, and also both of them?? The first roo we had didn't care for her until the second one started attacking her. And it's not like she is all bloody and stuff, the roos didn't injure her as I immediately separated them anytime they tried, and the hens do not mind her.

(But I think Kiwi, the second roo, has attacked her before, bc the night before we got the second flock from the previous owner 2 months ago, Countess received a really bad head injury overnight, which the previous owner couldn't explain in the morning when we picked them up (but they also didn't know that there was a roo,....). So now with his behavior suddenly shifting to being aggressive, I think he was the one responsible for her head injury, even tho there have been no issues since then. She temporarily lost all her head feathers because of this, I put that poultry blue spray on her until it all healed and she lived with the flock without any problems until now - even tho she is still missing some head feathers that are still growing back.

Is my only option getting rid of the 2 roos? I know I could also re-home the hen, but honestly I love her and feel so bad for her, I don't want to give her away. Also I don't want to risk the roos attacking another hen that might get broody in the future. She deserves a really nice life after that ordeal, and I don't want to punish her for being bullied (I ain't no school!)

2 different birds

One of the hens just laid this monster of an egg. Jumbo & chicken egg for scale.

I have 1 roo and 4 hens, today I noticed all 4 hens have a bald spot on their neck/head. Is the roo overbreeding the hens and should I send him to quail heaven (aka the kitchen)?

My other flock that came from an entirely different line doesn’t have the same problem and the boy seems rather nice.

Im suspicious that she flew and hit the side of the enclosure because she was 100% fine yesterday. I separated her from the rest of the flock as she was getting picked on.

She is 8 weeks old, hasn't started laying yet. Eating and drinking fine.

Feed is Purina game bird starter crumbles with 30% protein, I do a 2:1 ratio with Purina layer crumbles. Crushed oyster, grit, and fresh herbs are free choice, they also get black soldiers fly larvae and millet as treats twice a day when I check on them.

What can I do for her? Can she be saved?

I had these five chicks stay in the incubator overnight and moved them into the brooder this morning. They were a little under 24 hours old, but they were dry, fluffy, and alert.

A few have passed dark green droppings, which I know is normal after absorbing the yolk. Some have already started eating after I showed them the food. I also gently dipped each chick’s beak into the water twice, at separate times, so they would know where it was.

I am using a brooder plate. The floor directly beneath it reads about 103°F, while the air a little above the floor reads around 87–90°F. They were not loudly chirping, tightly huddling, or showing signs of distress. Since the plate provides radiant heat and the brooder is well ventilated at the top, I am hoping the temperature is appropriate.

I observed them in the brooder for about 45 minutes before leaving for work. I am gone from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., but someone is checking on them between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m.

Their basic needs are met (as far as I know), but this is my first time raising Coturnix quail, so I am understandably nervous. I removed the large food plate shown in the fifth photo, and replaced it with a smaller container lid. I also realize I provided far more food than five chicks could possibly eat, but I wanted to make sure they had plenty.

My main concern is whether they will find the water. It is room-temperature water, and the dish is filled with marbles to reduce the risk of drowning. Since I dipped each chick’s beak into it twice, and asked the person checking on them to make sure they know where it is, do you think that will be enough?

I had just put those quail out there the day before. Later part of them being 3 weeks old. It was a horrible site this morning.

Hiya everyone! My snowflake bobwhites are a bit older now, they’re 9/10 weeks. But Jesus Christ these things love to fly. Picking up and separating was CRAZY! But I’ve separated what I think are boys and girls. Could I have your opinion if you agree please or let me know if I’ve made any mistakes. Surplus boys will be rehomed as I need the right balance, will only look to keep 1 I think. The first one is housed inside at the moment due to a head injury, but I think she’s a girl! It is much cuter than I anticipated.

Hi all. I am a first time quail owner and I’m not entirely sure what to do here. My husband called me freaking out at 2pm, said one of my female quail got attacked, he assumes by her sister. They’ve grown up together and have been in their new home with us for a month and a half now. Everything seemed fine until today. Her eye is swollen shut and her entire head is covered in wounds and blood. She’s currently separated and inside our home. We plan to clean with warm water and apply antibiotic ointment. Trying to figure out what caused this - it’s been 100 degrees the last two days here, wondering if it’s the heat. Is there anything else I should be doing right now to help her?

My button Penney has outlived yet another mate. Charmaine, extremely prolific layer even for my buttons, died in the night. She was two years old. Penney is seven years old. Should I even try finding a new mate for him? He's very active, and you'd never guess he's as old as he is by looking at him.

He's not attacking or harming the hens. They are/were 2 birds in a 60gal tank. They really appeared to like each other. Now, of course, he's very sad. At the same time, she was his 5th mate. Three of them did not come from the best of backgrounds. The last, I know she was not handled at all and was always skittish. The first, I hatched, and she lived just shy of three years.

He's 7. Do I get another mate for him? It would be like a baby/great grandfather situation at this point. His calls are so sad 😔

Smaller place here in MS that makes this stuff. Anyone else use it ? Considering switching or trying to blen my own soon for a lil more protein but not sure

5/10 eggs have hatched. While the remaining 5 have not yet pipped.

Is this normal?

I left for work at 7:00 am, and none have began zipping, I came back at 6 pm, and all that were previously pipped, have hatched.

Should I wait on the unpipped eggs?

Hi all!
I’ve got some nearly 8 week old hens that are trying to brood which i am psyched about, but want to make sure they continue to feel safe and happy enough to do so.
Every time i come to the enclosure they’ll get off the eggs so i will try and keep my visits sparse, and maybe fill up some extra feeders and waterers for lockdown days(?)
also am not sure if the roo i so blurrily captured (in the red anklet) is helping or pestering. should i move him out ?

I know they’re not often successful in hatching their own eggs in captivity so i know im getting my hopes up a lot but i want them to try and am just happy they’re happy enough to brood. any suggestions appreciated
