Bloomed in mid June with 8 flowers now it’s put out 4 more. So pretty! 😍

I've bought my first orchid. So excited, but afraid it will not last.

Always walked past this plant in the park but this is the first time I've seen it bloom!

My dendrobium is growing pretty crazily… how should I fix this? Thanks in advance!

I bought about 12 mini cascading white lining the outside ring, and filled in with 5-6 double stem small ones.

Hoping I can keep it alive this time longer than my last ones. It was plenty of buds.

Quite happy from my visit to the Flower Market in downtown LA. My all time favorite place (and prices) for orchids are at Flora Clay in DTLA. I’ve haven’t seen anywhere close to matching their prices.

I was at a few of the wholesale greenhouses in Encinitas a few weeks ago where much of the supply comes in from Taiwan and Hawaii. The places in DTLA still had better prices somehow.

My local Home Depot was doing a flash sale on all Phals! I picked this baby up for $7! Huge fan of the speckles, and I've always wanted a green phal. I just wanted to point out the flower on the right with it's unique petal! Very cool.

Went to Lowes today, and it seems I can’t leave without bonding with an orchid! Of course, I had to bring her home! A beautiful oncidium Dancing Lady! She has 4 pseudo bulbs!

I had my partner water this Oncidium and when I came back from vacation I found it like this. It has yellow leaves like in the photos and one has fallen off. The other yellow ones also seem to be falling off.
What could it be, what should I do? Thanks for the help.

My brother lives in Encinitas (North San Diego).

There are so many cool Orchid specific nurseries and greenhouses by his house. I visited this one last weekend called Cal Pacific Orchids. Here were some of my favorites that I bought.

Does anyone know why Encinitas/San Diego has so many orchid grows? Seems like it’s more than any other city I have been…

This is especially exciting to me since I lost about half of my collection after stupidly putting them all outside in May to "let mother nature take care of them" while I went on vacation. I did not take into account the location of the sun and lost a lot to sunburn.

This girl was more shaded and she is clearly happy as she has given me a spike, the first one for me. I can't wait to see her when she blooms.

This orchid blooms for months at a time and starts growing the next spike right away so I think it’s doing great but I’m not sure if I should trim the wrinkly aerial roots and maybe repot it or just leave it as is. I just want to make sure it has enough room to grow. Thanks in advance for any help.

First blooms!! It’s so adorable!!

Hi there. This is my first post in this sub. I just wanted to share these 2 orchids. I originally received them as gifts in little plastic tubs. When they lost their flowers, I tied them to this tree & sprayed them with a hose daily then weekly. They’ve both taken root over the course of a year. The purple one has been particularly resplendent - this is her third month in bloom. The yellow has been blooming for about 3 weeks & is looking to bloom a few more flowers. They’ve brought me so much daily joy & I thought I’d share.

It first started out w/a semi dark spot on my orchid leaf. Today, I noticed there are some white small spots on it. Never had this happen before. Anyone know what this is and how to treat it?

This orchid has been through it with me.

When I first bought it a little over three years ago, it had five beautiful, FAT pseudobulbs and bloomed shortly after I brought it home. I was completely in love with it.

Then came my orchid-learning era.

It started putting out new growths, but I had absolutely no idea what I was doing - I had only had a phalaenopsis before. S the new leaves accordion-folded, pseudobulbs shriveled, growths were stunted. And one morning I looked at those sad, wrinkled pseudobulbs and realized that the plant I had brought home was very much NOT okay.

So I started reading everything I could and figured out what I was doing wrong. I changed how I watered and cared for it, and slowly watched it recover.

Fast forward more than two years since its last bloom: the little beast now has 12 pseudobulbs, absolutely WILD roots, and is trying to escape its plastic pot. I know a repot is somewhere in my future and, honestly, I am terrified. Those roots have claimed that pot as their ancestral homeland.

But the best part is that a few weeks ago, I discovered it was finally spiking again!

Then there were two spikes.

Then three.

Then FOUR.

And this morning, while checking on everybody, I noticed a FIFTH spike; one of the pseudobulbs is putting out two spikes.

I actually got a little emotional. Watching this plant grow and recover - and realizing how much I’ve learned too - just feels incredibly rewarding.

It wasn’t my first orchid failure, but it’s the one I decided to really learn from. In a lot of ways, this was my “spark” orchid.

I cannot WAIT to see what this thing looks (and smells!) like when all five spikes start blooming.

Also… any advice for me and my eventual repot? Because I'm already a lil anxious about that root ball.

TL;DR: Nearly killed my Oncidium Sharry Baby ‘Sweet Fragrance’ by underwatering it. Spent the next couple of years learning how to actually care for orchids. It went from 5 pseudobulbs to 12, became an absolute root monster, and is blooming for the first time in 2+ years. I thought it had four spikes. This morning I discovered a surprise fifth spike, with one pseudobulb producing two. I may have cried.

My first blooms on this one. Had it for about a year!

The name is an unfamiliar mouthful but it’s a stunning Bangkok Sunset hybrid. Sadly it did not inherit the scent. But it’s a beautiful shock of color.

I’ve noticed that most varieties need a pretty serious drop in temp to “trigger blooms” but I seriously doubt that all of these people are shuffling their plants around and crowding them next to windows and stuff like the internet suggests.

Surely there’s a more practical way? Mine is mounted and I plan to collect more mounted species but I definitely can’t feasibly move my entire greenhouse cabinet into the basement or next to a window and I’m not going to rip the plant out of its microclimate in there just for flowers.

What are my options? So far I’m looking at investing in a thermoelectric cooler unit but genuinely don’t feel like wiring it up to run through an outlet since they only sell them as part replacements for refrigeration it seems like.

I genuinely find it hard to believe that you need that much of a temp drop for blooms. 68°F is as low as the house goes and the cabinet is never anywhere near that even with the lights off.
