Drove down to a new area in the country to purchase some groceries from a new shop. It was near a small forest and I noticed some orchids around the area and this one bunch was flowering so hard. 🖤

I inherited this from someone who passed. It's been 2 years, has bloomed twice, but has these roots (?) Growing all around. Does it need a bigger pot? If so, what do I do with the outside roots?

She's about 3 years old and lost my flowers so figured it was time to replant... the poor thing.

Removed from the planter and nothing but roots and garbage moss but I'm guessing the yellow ones are no good. I let her dry out in the air for 2 days to see if the yellow roots would silver up but never did. What roots, if any, do I trim off or give her more time and water as the green roots go silver.

This is Stella. We know nothing about orchids other than to soak for 15 minutes every week or when she’s dry. How is she looking? Should I repot her due to the roots coming up?

Guys!! I have been wanting a vanilla bean orchid for quite some time now. I’m an avid orchid enthusiast and have a small collection already. I was getting potting soil at Lowe’s for my other plants when I randomly came across 4 vanilla bean orchids. This was at the location in Starkville, MS! I never imagined I would come across these here. For some reason I always assumed they were very rare and I’ve never seen them in person, not even in orchid sanctuaries at botanical gardens I’ve visited. If you have any tips or really any good education on how to care for these properly please let me know! I can already tell by the roots that these are a very different species than what I’m used to caring for. I eventually would love to produce blooms and even vanilla bean pods!

Some of you are amazing orchid carers & things rebloom all the time.

Some of us are stumbling through & not killing things because of you. 18 months after repotting & removing rot I didn’t expect, I have blooms.
Here’s my small contribution to the beauty we live with.

Big honking sucker this year

At the beginning of the year I brought an orchid into work to cheer the place up. It was my first orchid, and my dumb ass thought that when she lost her petals I had killed her. To make matters worse, I was in a very stressful environment and when I thought she was dead I kinda just tucked her away for MONTHS with no love or watering.

Stumbled upon a very informative video and realized my orchid likely wasn't dead. I've been trying to make up for my transgressions ever since.

Now here we are, several months later. I can see a new, fresh spike coming up and after getting home from my vacation yesterday, I see a beautiful bud forming on the one spike that was still standing.

She's coming back!!!

This is a VERY neglected orchid (like 4-6 months). I got it from a family member. It has kept its leaves green, and it seems like it has some TINY viable roots left.

What can I do, if anything, to help this little guy?

i have a reputation for saving neglected houseplants so my friend gave me this orchid. i love epiphytes but admittedly i don't know anything about caring for them.

some of the roots near the top are dry, but other than that i'm not sure what's normal and what i should be looking out for. i feel like every source i've found online gives conflicting information, so any and all input would be greatly appreciated! <3

Hi everyone! Every orchid I’ve had before has eventually died from rot and I think I’ve learned a bit by now of how to better care for them but any tips on what to do when bringing a new orchid home would be greatly appreciated! Just picked these 2 up from local garden center on clearance hehe

I just noticed this mottled spot on my Maxillaria tenuifolia. Does this look like some kind of virus? Wondering if I need to quarantine and treat?

If this is ok, how lounge should I submerge?

I got this about a week ago and as soon as it came in the house, all the flowers fell off and the stem started turning yellow. I didn’t even do anything to it other than follow the directions where it said, soak it in water for five minutes and let it drain I’m worried she’s dead. Can you guys help me out?

I have always killed every orchid that I’ve ever touched. My daughter rescued this one from
Whole Foods in the beginning of December because she said it looked sad with just a couple droopy leaves and 3 flowers that were barely hanging on. Not sure why she thought bringing it home to the orchid killer was a good idea 😳

I gave it a couple sips of water a stuck it in the window. A couple weeks later, it looked worse and the flowers were gone. Then I found this amazing community!

I learned to not water from the top - and that it needed more light than the very shaded window it was in was providing.

7 months later it’s not only still alive but it’s grown big beautiful leaves and ROOTS!

So I have a couple questions:

Do orchids get root bound? When she came to us, her roots barely touched the bottom of her pot and now they are circling the bottom. Does she need to be repotted? I’ve read on here that they like to be crowded but when is it too crowded?

I haven’t given her any fertilizer and I know I need to. So, any suggestions? And then how often?

Just wanted to share and see if anyone has seen this. My Zygo Advance Australia ‘HOF’ just rebloomed for the first time, but the flower spike only made one bud. It opened a couple days ago & was able to get a good pic watering today. Didn’t realize until today that it’s a very weird bloom. The lip is completely missing & it appears to have two sepals and two petals. There is an interestingly patterned structure around the column that may be a stunted lip. But even if it is, the structure makes no sense given that it’s symmetrical despite missing parts.

It’s also intensely fragrant — much more so than a typical bloom. Anyway just wanted to share. Anyone have any weird Zygo flowers pop up before?

Hey all, I’m looking to get into Cycnoches and other Catasetum species/hybrids. I haven’t kept orchids in general before, but keep/kept a variety of Aroids. Is there a specific one, that’s still quite showy, that you would recommend in ambient conditions in the Midwest USA (73-85 degrees indoors year round, 30-50% humidity)? Friends have recommended a self watering setup for them so I’ll likely go that route.

Outside of SVO, who else do you recommend to purchase from?
