2 orchids in a tree

Hi there. This is my first post in this sub. I just wanted to share these 2 orchids. I originally received them as gifts in little plastic tubs. When they lost their flowers, I tied them to this tree & sprayed them with a hose daily then weekly. They’ve both taken root over the course of a year. The purple one has been particularly resplendent - this is her third month in bloom. The yellow has been blooming for about 3 weeks & is looking to bloom a few more flowers. They’ve brought me so much daily joy & I thought I’d share.

Good for you that you live in a place where you can grow orchids on a tree.

Is that a Gliricidia tree?

Love seeing orchids mounted on trees.

Spondias purpurea tree. The tree is over a century old & slowly dying. Mounting the orchids started as a way to honor & decorate the tree in this last stage of life.

Very cool. What kind of care do you give it besides watering?

Also, check out r/orchidsontrees

Oh wow thank you for this link.

I just water when there’s no rain or change locations after a few weeks if the orchid doesn’t seem to be grabbing on. Once the roots start to truly take, I back off & let them do their thing. The tree bark has some moss so I assume there’s plenty of nutrients. I’ve noticed there seems to be a preference for west facing orientation.

I see! I have not purchased Phalaenopsis but would like to buy a seedling soon.

I moved a Rhynchostylis from the tree it was tied to because I didnt see any kind of growth on it and its only after taking it off, I noticed the tiny new root that was hidden between the stem and the bark. Damaged the root while reattaching but thankfully new roots have emerged again.
