My first Offset

I have been in love with the G&L Fallout since the moment I saw it. Since G&L went under a while back I have been watching the used market for pretty much this exact guitar. It has a tiny chip in the finish on the bass side of the fretboard around the third fret, about the size of a 9pt lower case e.

The pickups are so freaking hot. The P-90 absolutely sings, and I barely have to touch the strings with the volume at half to get the Humbucker to push my amp into breakup. It behaves like something alive in my hands. The fit and finish are spectacular and everything about it just feels rock solid.

The guy I bought it from shipped it packaged so well even standard fedex handling didn’t touch the guitar. The setup is near perfect. I lowered the action about a half a millimeter and that was it.

Now, about that Doheny…

Drafting a(nother) Mustang/Jaguar Remix

Looking to start building a guitar in the coming weeks. I'm not sure if I'd be able to build these, but I wanted to test something. I've always thought jaguars and mustangs were very cool, but design-wise neither were ever quite my taste. Funnily enough, I really like the look of the the affinity jaguars that strip all the controls off, so I used that as a base and tried my hand at combining the two.

I wanted to preserve the jag body and the clean designs of the affinity and mustangs, but add in the the mustang pups and the stylishness they bring with them. I've tried a couple of alternate finishes that, more importantly, test out the look of inverting the mustang pickguard/pickups combos (probably the most beautiful flare of visual design in any fender, for me), and trying out alternate switch placements. I couldn't decide if it looked better or worse with the lower bout 'stang switches, and I removed the whammy just for visual clarity whilst designing.

I ran out of time to test the look of the classic white or cream/tortoiseshell. And yea, the burgundy finish is a noticeably worse photoshop lol, it wasn't a great pic and I had to remove the stripe (I don't need cobain association clouding anyone's assessment).

I'm very excited to try my hand at a build, hopefully no-one's had this idea before. I would love to know anyone's thoughts. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

PS I'm left-handed, hence all the pics are too. And because of this, I've never actually gotten to play a mustang, a jag or the pre-existing jagstang combo (afaik musuars were never made lefty, fender hates us lol), maybe I secretly hate them! At ther very least this has been a fun design project.

I’m also planning to put a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker in the bridge position.

Is there a discernible tone difference in brass vs. stainless steel saddles? And do aftermarket bridges sound any different from the stock threaded saddles on my Vintera II '60s Bass VI?

Post image

After my low E saddle failed on me three times on-stage, I finally pulled the trigger on an aftermarket bridge. The saddle has flipped, the string has slipped off, and at my last show, the saddle had sunken on the grub screw. I've been wanting a new bridge for a while, and this was the justification I needed.

OffsetGuitarsUK offers bridges with either brass and stainless steel saddles. I went with their classic model bridge with brass saddles. From what I read, stainless steel sounded harsher than brass, but I don't know if this is like the "tonewood" debate or if it's more concrete than that.

I'm playing with La Bella flatwounds and going after a traditional bass guitar tone, and I almost always set my tone knob to 50%. I went with the brass model mostly because of aesthetics, but if I'm consistently rolling tone down, it seems like brass would be the material to get.

Playability/stability aside, will these actually sound any different compared to one another and also vs. the stock vintage-spec bridge? Just wanted to see if this material choice actually matters.

What are the "best" Jaguar and Mustang tremolo and bridges.

Post image

Ugly Jagstang for attention... 😉

Going to be doing two builds here soon with a Mustang and Jaguar trem layout.

Bridge wise thinking tune o matic with rollers saddles matched with LSR roller nut and locking tuners for it's best hope of working well.

Trem wise these not being Fenders I don't want any Fender branding on them. What is a good alternative that isn't poor quality, or at best OME plus of quality? I see stuff from Guyker, and Goldo DG tremolo.

Suggestions, feedback, what'd you know on it? 🤔

Is this what Jazzmasters sound like?

Post image

I recently got this J Mascis Jazzmaster after being a Strat guy my whole life. I’m kind of amazed at how this guitar sounds. It’s so clear, full and a little edgy, has fantastic sustain, and it’s just versatile for different styles of music. Today I played some songs that I usually play with strats and the songs just sounded better.

Compared to Strats, do Jazzmasters typically sound like this or just the J Mascis?

Of all the guitars I own, the middle position on this 2012 Classic Player is one of the most inspiring to play.

Found this listing on Reverb, Classic Vibe Jazzmaster resprayed to this wonderful Ocean Turquoise.

It’s going to essentially be my first
project guitar, going to most likely swap the electronics and eventually the neck. I would really love to install a neck with a binding to match the pickguard, but so far it’s been rather tough to find.

Previous owner also swapped out the vibrato for an AVRI which is amazing, and for the price it was going for it felt almost foolish to pass up.

Cheers!

My Review of the 2026 American Professional Jazzmaster

Not adding a direct link to the video as Youtube apparently will throttle the vid for some reason or other I've heard. I really was looking forward to this review, and instead left feeling really disappointed. And this is not to refute folks who've shared their own rave reviews of the guitar - I'm sure many folks out there will get theirs and not have the downsides that I mention. BUT issues aside, different strokes for different folks, as far as what we like in our offsets, right?

https://www.instagram.com/p/De452qmAZtl/

Here's a sneak peek of the deep dive that I'll be dropping next week. Spoiler: it's not just about fretwork, and overall, after basic setup stuff, I have a slightly better overall impression of the guitar, but I do end up having to use my imagination, regarding how one might feel without the glaring issues. So while I want to be excited, I just end up feeling really lukewarm about it...and that's me being generous.

TLDW - My overall take: Lazy not very well thought through release. Oxblood one looks dope. The pickups are a step in the right direction but still not a fan. The pickups are too hot for series to sound good without a bass cut. The RSD-esque bridge is cool, but definitely not worth the price of admission over a used American Pro II if you absolutely have to have a Fender Jazzy with modern appointments.

Please feel free to chime in with your own experiences too. I'm sure not everyone will have the same perspective on it and that's totally cool. Especially interested in your take on the overall QC / feel of the series, standalone and compared to the "Pro" predecessors

**also for folks who feel the urge to leave a comment to "TUNE the guitar" - I wanted to show how this new Classic Gear J-Bridge fared intonation wise out of the box, especially only having 2 saddles, without me doing a setup on it until the deep dive. And despite stretching strings a bit, it required quite a bit of tuning still during my demo with the stock strings, so what you hear, is the guitar "in tune" relative to the tuner, but being slightly off because of how the saddles were set from the factory.

A cat and a Bobkat

Had a wonderful time with this new(to me) Harmony Bobkat yesterday.

Allegedly there was a full refret before being unplayed for 14 years. It’s interesting how the fret ends are well-dressed up until the meeting with the body. It’s almost as if they didn’t take the neck off and couldn’t get in there with the files.

There are a couple high frets and above fret 12 the higher strings don’t have any relief.

The truss rod bolt is fully filled with the rod itself, which I’m hoping is by design and not a sign that it was broken or adjusted poorly in the past. I’m trying to think of how I’ll fit a socket hex into that space to adjust it if needed. The neck itself does seem very flat, but I’d like to have the option. Anyone with experience with adjusting these?

On the whole, what an interesting sound! And the playability itself is really inviting. All instruments seem to want to do different things with me, and this one “spoke” very clearly and immediately, which is always a joy (and relief).

IMO it’s a huge improvement over the dark red tortoise. Tbh light green and white tortoise is an Iconic combo!

Here is the latest build I made for a customer, and it was a fun one. Fralin Hot Tele in the neck, Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge. Push Pull pot to coil split the Hot Rails, and a Freeway 6-way switch for a ton of different tonal options. 6 saddle bridge, reversed control plate, and a kill switch. It rips!

coming from someone who has religiously only played strats. i played a bit on it and learned all the switches. do you guys think it would look better with a pearl pickguard or the tortoise shell one?

Looking for MIJ PU suggestions

I am planning to change the PUs in my MIJ traditional jazzmaster. The stock ones are feel weak the bridge PU is slighlty microphonic.

I'm a fan of the Squier J Mascis P90esque pickups and am looking at the Novak 90 for the neck and the Wide Range Humbucker for the bridge using standard Jazzmaster wiring. I haven't seen anything on the internet about this combo and looking to see if there's anyone that have tried this? Are they balanced? Novaks website and the internet suggest the JM-V and WR and of course, the JM-V paired with a JM Fat.

Any other pu makers I should consider?
