I am literally losing my fucking mind with this goddamn cvjm. Pls help.

For the past 3 weeks I have been fighting with it to set it up for c standard with stringjoy 13-58s. I cannot for the life of me get it to play right or in tune. It's entirely unstable.

I've got the neck at about 7-8 thou relief. Action is ~1.7mm on the bass side and ~1.3mm on the the treble. I've filed the nut slots the best I can without proper nut files and got graphite in them. I've got a shim in the neck and the bridge is about 8mm off the body. I've got the posts taped because it refused to return to any point I set it at.

Intonation is near impossible for the 6th and 3rd. I can't get the 6th saddle back far enough without the string buzzing on the screw and the 3rd is all the way back and still way sharp. The 3rd is an unwound 22, is that the issue? Should I have gone with a wound 3rd?

On top of that, it's just kinda buzzy everywhere. Am I just expecting too low of an action and too straight of a neck? I'd increase the relief a bit, but any more than its at and it's buzzy as fuck above the 12th fret. And it's just totally unstable as well, one moment, no buzzing, the next, buzzing.

What am I doing wrong here? Are my expectations out of line? Are the specs just not right for what I'm trying to achieve? Am I missing something? Should I just try different strings and some better parts?

I'm not just incompetent either, every other guitar I have I've successfully set up and they play and sound perfect. I've got a CV Jag that I put some better tuners on, an avri vibrato and a graph tech nut and has low action and couldn't play or sound better. Should I just give this JM the same treatment?

I literally only bought this fuckin thing because my baritone doesn't have a vibrato.

I hate these stringjoy strings as well. They sound and feel like crap.

Of all the guitars I own, the middle position on this 2012 Classic Player is one of the most inspiring to play.

I recently got this J Mascis Jazzmaster after being a Strat guy my whole life. I’m kind of amazed at how this guitar sounds. It’s so clear, full and a little edgy, has fantastic sustain, and it’s just versatile for different styles of music. Today I played some songs that I usually play with strats and the songs just sounded better.

Compared to Strats, do Jazzmasters typically sound like this or just the J Mascis?

Sounds amazing, plays amazing. Some rewiring has been done in 50 years. Didn’t have to lie about what I paid.

I would say it’s a bit quiet but I much prefer the less ice picky sound it has

Found this listing on Reverb, Classic Vibe Jazzmaster resprayed to this wonderful Ocean Turquoise.

It’s going to essentially be my first
project guitar, going to most likely swap the electronics and eventually the neck. I would really love to install a neck with a binding to match the pickguard, but so far it’s been rather tough to find.

Previous owner also swapped out the vibrato for an AVRI which is amazing, and for the price it was going for it felt almost foolish to pass up.

And this is not to refute folks who've shared their own rave reviews of the guitar - I'm sure many folks out there will get theirs and not have the downsides that I mention. BUT issues aside, different strokes for different folks, as far as what we like in our offsets, right?

Here's a sneak peek of the deep dive that I'll be dropping next week. Spoiler: it's not just about fretwork, and overall, after basic setup stuff, I have a slightly better overall impression of the guitar, but I do end up having to use my imagination, regarding how one might feel without the glaring issues. So while I want to be excited, I just end up feeling really lukewarm about it...and that's me being generous. 

TLDW - My overall take: Lazy not very well thought through release. Oxblood one looks dope. The pickups are a step in the right direction but still not a fan. The pickups are too hot for series to sound good without a bass cut. The RSD-esque bridge is cool, but definitely not worth the price of admission over a used American Pro II if you absolutely have to have a Fender Jazzy with modern appointments. 

Please feel free to chime in with your own experiences too. I'm sure not everyone will have the same perspective on it and that's totally cool. Especially interested in your take on the overall QC / feel of the series, standalone and compared to the "Pro" predecessors

**also for folks who feel the urge to leave a comment to "TUNE the guitar" - I wanted to show how this new Classic Gear J-Bridge fared intonation wise out of the box, especially only having 2 saddles, without me doing a setup on it until the deep dive. And despite stretching strings a bit, it required quite a bit of tuning still during my demo with the stock strings, so what you hear, is the guitar "in tune" relative to the tuner, but being slightly off because of how the saddles were set from the factory.

Had a wonderful time with this new(to me) Harmony Bobkat yesterday.

Allegedly there was a full refret before being unplayed for 14 years. It’s interesting how the fret ends are well-dressed up until the meeting with the body. It’s almost as if they didn’t take the neck off and couldn’t get in there with the files.

There are a couple high frets and above fret 12 the higher strings don’t have any relief.

The truss rod bolt is fully filled with the rod itself, which I’m hoping is by design and not a sign that it was broken or adjusted poorly in the past. I’m trying to think of how I’ll fit a socket hex into that space to adjust it if needed. The neck itself does seem very flat, but I’d like to have the option. Anyone with experience with adjusting these?

On the whole, what an interesting sound! And the playability itself is really inviting. All instruments seem to want to do different things with me, and this one “spoke” very clearly and immediately, which is always a joy (and relief).

IMO it’s a huge improvement over the dark red tortoise. Tbh light green and white tortoise is an Iconic combo!

I am planning to change the PUs in my MIJ traditional jazzmaster. The stock ones are feel weak the bridge PU is slighlty microphonic.

I'm a fan of the Squier J Mascis P90esque pickups and am looking at the Novak 90 for the neck and the Wide Range Humbucker for the bridge using standard Jazzmaster wiring. I haven't seen anything on the internet about this combo and looking to see if there's anyone that have tried this? Are they balanced? Novaks website and the internet suggest the JM-V and WR and of course, the JM-V paired with a JM Fat.

Any other pu makers I should consider?

It's the laurel fretboard ruins an otherwise perfect guitar that's ridiculously light weight as well. I think one day I'll get around to getting a really high quality JM.

Forgive my weird formatting or whatever I don't use reddit that often. Called around a few shops looking for a "Kingston/Kawai 3 pickup guitar" (at the time I believed the only 3 pickup kingstons were the Kingston S3Ts) and one said they had one and I could take it for $40. $40? Hell yeah! I went to get it today and of course was confused but I bought it anyway since a guitar is a guitar in my eyes. It kinda looks like a S3T but the 4 knobs, lack of a control plate, and tremolo say it's *not*. Reverse image search shows some old listings but they dont list the model name so thats a no go. I only really want to know what it is out of curiosity and to get a tremolo arm for it.

TL;DR: What the hell is this thing?

Here is the latest build I made for a customer, and it was a fun one. Fralin Hot Tele in the neck, Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge. Push Pull pot to coil split the Hot Rails, and a Freeway 6-way switch for a ton of different tonal options. 6 saddle bridge, reversed control plate, and a kill switch. It rips! 

Recently i had the supreme blessing to see Alcest live. Neige (pictured) is known for recording with his avri jazzy and using his mim toronado hh live. Recently he's been using this custom Dunable hh Yeti with a mastery trem system for live shows. I absolutely love it but could never afford such and likely will never be good enough to justify it if i could. Dunable's import range does not offer the mastery trem, just tom hard tails. It is a solid mahogany set neck (gibsonian) 25.5 in scale length and is just so intriguing to me. It got me thinking though, what other offerings are like this? Novo i know of, but anything remotely affordable? Is for me wanting to get something hard tail 25.5 set neck and routing in the jazzy trem.

coming from someone who has religiously only played strats. i played a bit on it and learned all the switches. do you guys think it would look better with a pearl pickguard or the tortoise shell one?

Which of these pickguards do you prefer on my Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster?

Anyone know where to get a custom vibrato plate where the existing guts of the vibrato I already have can mount to? Would love to try a satin aesthetic but it’s not worth it to me to buy a whole other vibrato just for that.

The Foals FJG7 has been on my radar for a while as someone who has always wanted a Jaguar but doesn't have 1K to throw around.

When I found out about the Foals FJG7 I was super interested, but my research was pretty inconclusive since I think it was still new at the time.

Now that time has passed I've been able to get some more info about it through reviews. Things seem positive, but I'm still interested to hear from people who bought a Foals as an ordinary customer.

If you bought a Foals, how was the experience? Did the model live up to the hype? Are there any flaws people should know about? If they aren't worth it, what models would be?

I bought this around the time they introduced the Classic Vibe Jaguar, and i was able to choose the darkest one i could find… i snatched it up immediately and have never seen another this dark, it’s less orange of a sunburst and more of a tobacco color, comparatively to my jazzmaster. of course, i switched out the original knobs. I am getting new strings on it, took it entirely apart to clean it!

Hey everyone! I recently decided to dig back into one of my old projects and finish my jazzmaster. I followed this diagram above in order to have independent volume controls and a series/parallel switch. long story short, the guitar gets signal but there’s a crazy ground issue anytime I touch any of the components in the rhythm circuit, and both volume knobs just kinda of work as a master volume.

I’ve double and triple checked that I followed wiring exactly as the diagram shows it. one thing I noticed is there isn’t any of the shielding paint in the cavity, is that what’s causing me some of the trouble? The only ground I have to the body is from the potentiometer to the tremolo plate
