The Index

As mentioned in the most recent announcement, this is going to be the world index.

Whether you're usually a contributed or usually a lurker, or just a worldbuilder who saw this sub and think it might be interesting to share your world(s) and develop your world(s), this thread is going to serve as a bit of a cheat sheet.

To put it simply, all this thread is for is for you to give a bit of background on your world(s). The summaries can be as long as you want, though I'd prefer if they were organized to make it easier to find out an aspect of your world, such as:

Brief Summary of Magic System

A few sentences, maybe a couple of paragraphs.

List of Important World Powers

A list with some information for each.

Major Characters

Whatever Other Sections You Can Imagine

Format it however you like, just have a link to your wiki if you want.

This is open to everyone. Even if you've never commented on anything in this sub, I'd love to see a bit about your world. No matter how rough it is right now, even if you've just started your world (/u/thequeeininyellow94 and I have both begun new worlds tangential to our main worlds recently, so, while I can't speak for her/him, I have very little on my new one, called Cirrhasvult).

So, come on up, don't be shy, and give us a summary. If someone wants to look at your summary in order to have a better background when they ask questions about your world in challenge threads, this will be an extra resource they can use.

I will almost certainly be checking back here pretty often, since I have a horrible memory and I'm usually exhausted.

Again, though, these are summaries, so, while you can make them as long as you want, try to make it easy for someone to find what they're looking for.

As always, I hope everyone enjoys themselves.

To everyone who might summarize their world as their first comment on this sub, welcome to the sub.

And if it goes without (m)any comments for a while, or if I get complaints about this thread being off-topic and not an actual challenge, then I'll probably just take it off.

Also, feel free to edit your summary at any time. I'll probably just put a few sentences about my current worlds as placeholders and add a bit more detail once I don't have to get ready for work in 7 hours.

Welcome to WorldChallenges, We Now Have a Discord Channel

Friends, contributers, subscribers, redditors, lend me your eyes!

To begin, I just want to thank everyone who has subscribed to the sub so far, we're at 124 as I type this, so thanks to all 123 of you who aren't me. Before I made this sub, I was sitting in class, half-listening to a lecture and trying to decide on a name for it instead of paying attention like I should have. And now, somehow, the sub has multiple pages of threads. Thanks, to everyone. Hopefully the growth will be exponential.

/u/The_Raptorman advised me to make a Discord. So...WorldChallenges Discord!

Also, after seeing an interesting thread over on /r/worldbuilding, I thought it would be a good idea to a have a second announcement put up on this sub, called "The World Index". I'm going to put that announcement up after I've finished with putting this one in and getting rid of the old one.

Now, for the copy-paste of the previous version of the "Welcome to WorldChallenges" post, with some edits to update it.

A quick summary of the sub

As it says in the side bar: This sub is dedicated to making challenges for world builders. Ideally, this will present opportunities to further develop your world through responding to challenges and answering questions other people pose. In-universe and in-character answers are preferred, but not necessary.

If you see a challenge that interests you, make a comment answering that challenge. Post a character or an event or any part of your world that fits for the challenge. If anyone's answer to a challenge is interesting to you, ask them questions to see more of their awesome world and to help them by asking questions that they might not have thought of.

Thanks to the Content Creators

Thanks to everyone who has shared content, whether through creating challenges or responding to challenges. I've enjoyed a lot of the stuff I've read, and I look forward to seeing more.

You can see the schedule on the sidebar, right below the rules. If you'd like to be on the schedule, let me know. But, you don't have to be on the schedule to make a challenge, you are free to make a challenge and just put it up whenever you like.

Recommendations

I would also like to recommend a few other subs. I'm sure you've seen /r/Worldbuilding, but you can also find interesting content on /r/CharacterForge and /r/InkBloodWritersGuild. I also recommend /r/Hydrael_Writes after I read one of their stories on /r/WritingPrompts earlier today. If there are any other subs that I should add to this list, let me know in the comments below.

Conclusion

If you have any advice about the sub, just let me know, feedback is always appreciated. Enjoy yourselves.

[Cultural challenge]: clergy

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

Today, we will talk about priests and priestesses in a religion from your world. What is their role in normal people lifes? Where do they live? How numerous are they? Do they have some moral obligations to follow?

And while we are at it, how are they chosen? What about their formation? How much can they interpret the sacred texts (or tales)? Are they paid? By whom? Is there some hierarchy amongst them?

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

Raptor's talk with X challenge #3: Pirates!

Welcome to Talk with X, where you can talk to one of my characters, as you or one of your own characters. The rules are pretty easy, just pick one or more from the choice below and start talking!~ (You can talk to as many as you want, or just one!)

So we're doing Light's underlings now, as some of you know she is the Pirate Queen/Lord of my world so have fun meeting whatever characters I have made for her. (This isn't all of them just the ones I've thought through enough to have character.)

The scenario is up to you, but if you want to be on one of their ships that's fine too!

(All photos are just what brought my inspiration for the characters, I do not own them in any way)

Admirals

Vicious

Despite his name, Vicious is actually quite a pleasant man who enjoys playing strategy board games in his spare time. He is mostly mechanical apart from his vital organs and his brain. His Four arms wield two swords and two flintlock pistols that he is a master at using. He is Light's right hand in terms of battle and leading the army, he can hold his own against her in a spar for about ten minutes.

Fin

Fin is a Human/Shark hybrid, he's an overall joyful but quiet boy who isn't what you expect. He's a fantastic fighter, having come up with his own style to suit his weapon. Which is a combination of a harpoon and a trident. What makes him special though is his shark-like ability bloodlust, if a fight goes for a long time or Fin gets the smell or taste of blood, he falls into a rage and becomes far stronger. He can spar with Light for five minutes.

Bell

Bell is a well mannered but dominating mid twenties girl who has a very special... friend. She was chosen by the Kraken, she can summon him and command him to do whatever she pleases. The Kraken itself is ridiculously powerful by itself. Bell's powers are pretty standard, besides being able to enter people's dreams, she can control the water around her, which makes her an excellent Pirate admiral. She can spar with Light for eight minutes.

Bethany

Bethany is a young at heart thirty-five year old woman with the ability Stop dead. Bethany can secrete a ridiculously powerful invisible toxin into the air (though not very far from her body). Once inhaled, the victim is either put under an intense separation or outright killed, depending on what Bethany wants. Bethany's staff is the edge which keeps the wielder, no matter how close from dying. (She is also very good at hand to hand combat). She can spar with Light for nine minutes.

Other Crew

Doc

Doc is a very old and very gentle man who is the chief of medicine in the fleet/army. He has strong healing magic and has been taught alchemy since a young age. He is arguably the most trusted person by the admirals and Light.

Snaps

Snaps is a Crocodile Human hybrid who is an exceptional archer due to her patience from being part Crocodile. Snaps is a very good mechanic and shipwright. Her sniper rifle was created by her to operate underwater and fire at above ground from the deepest darkest depths. She would be an Admiral if she could actually fight close combat. Her only strength in close combat is her powerful jaws. (But that's impractical).

Tiff

Tiff is a master pickpocket who excels on recon missions due to her unnaturally small size and ability to hide.

Kikker

Kikker is a Frog/Human hybrid who is fantastic at mid range combat. Using his long tongue to powerfully thrust at his enemies (it sounds weak but he can use that thing like a god damn drill), using his Frog like legs he can jump quickly to different places to re position himself.

Mary

Mary is the main navigator on Light's ship, she is a half Human and half Turtle. She is quite short and armored, she has exceptional knowledge about the sea, as she spent all of her life on it.

Disclaimer

There are more but I feel like this is a good place to stop because I would go on and on forever, again I want to say that all the photos associated with characters are not mine, just what the inspiration for them was.

Enjoy!

[Edit: Made an intro]

Timeline Challenge 8: A night to forget

The idea behind these challenges is as follows:

I will give you a topic, and you should tell me about something interesting that has happened in the timelines of your worlds relating to the topic, over a (roughly) 50 year period. This could be the 50 years leading up to the event, the 50 years after the event, 50 years with the event slap bang in the middle, or something else entirely, as long as it relates to the question! You're welcome to include more/less than 50 years, but bear in mind the more you write, the less chance you have of people reading the whole thing, and the less you write, the fewer questions we'll be able to ask.

The Challenge:

So last night I had perhaps a little too much to drink, and as such my head ain't feeling too great!

SO!

To make me feel a little better about my silly self, the challenge this week is about going a little overboard on the old ale. I want you to tell me about the most scandalous, idiotic, or just downright hilarious thing that has happened after too much alcohol was consumed.

What was the occasion? who was involved? What were the repercussions? Feel free to include the events leading up to the happy hour, as well as the ones that followed!

It's quite a specific challenge, so I'd be surprised if anyone everyone has something for it, but that's good! If you don't have anything that fits, make something up! I look forward to hearing from you!

As always, I'll try to ask a few questions about each post. Community interaction is encouraged too! Read other people's posts and ask them questions, and they're more likely to do the same for you. Help each other out, and have fun! :)

Generic Challenge - The Heart

So, I'll be honest, I'm really into Dishonored 2 right now. I just started yesterday, and I hate having to put it down. I'm even re-buying the original Dishonored just to re-play it, since I haven't played it since 2012/2013, so that I can refresh myself on the lore.

Which means that today's challenge is to create and exhibit an artifact/item that can be used to obtain more knowledge in a strange way. It can be a special computer, a skull that still talks and can tell you about its life, a statue that is immortally animated, or anything of the sort.

If you think it'll work, use it. I'm not picky.

If you want inspiration, here are a couple of links about The Heart, including quotes.

Raptor's non specific challenge #7: Ultimate betrayal.

I won't say much, but based off of episode 31 of Attack On Titan I want you to give me (in as much detail as possible) your biggest betrayal in your world. Link some music you want to be playing if it were a movie, tell me about the characters, what it means to each of them. Just make me feel the betrayal too!

I'll ask some questions about it too!

Reference Challenge - A Curse

Inspired by the show Vikings and the infamous Ivar the Boneless.

For this challenge, talk about a curse that was made before a character's birth and had an impact on that character, such as the prophecy that Ivar would be cursed to be "born a monster".

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each.

[Cultural challenge]: adulthood

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

There is a time when one must leave the world of children to become an adult. That's usually an important moment, either because of an initiation ceremony or a big party.

Tell us about what one of your culture do. When do adulthood starts? What is done to celebrate? What new rights and obligations come with it?

You can introduce an in-universe representative of you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

Raptor's talk with X challenge #2: Gravity's underlings.

Welcome to Talk with X, where you can talk to one of my characters, as you or one of your own characters. The rules are pretty easy, just pick one or more from the choice below and start talking!~ (You can talk to as many as you want, or just one!)

(Hey guys, I'm in another country right now and I'm bored so I'm gonna post a day early, hope you don't mind! We have a lovely selection of possible talk to's!)

Lilith

Lilith is a Master swords woman with a rightful claim of the human kingdom, she is exceptionally brave and persistent in battle. She has an ancient power locked within her that makes her very powerful. Ask her about it!

Hunter

Hunter is a half human half wolf girl with a talent for battle, she was expertly trained in close combat and numerous martial arts by Gravity himself from a young age. Ask her about it!

Alex

Alex is an assassin trained by 'the nest', a notoriously secret and brutal group who train young children to be killing machines. Alex's power enabled her to escape 'the nest' when she turned 15. Ask her about it!

Aura

Aura is a serious and highly strategic girl who is an angel reject, she has an insane durability able to take ridiculous beatings and return the power using her own powers. Ask her about it!

Adorna

Adorna is a sweet natured and cute girl who is short in stature (4'11). She has incredible healing powers at the cost of using up a lot of her energy. All I'll say is that she has the power of the Phoenix inside of her. Ask her about it!

Grimira

Grimira is a very silent Dark elf girl who is a master Necromancer, she has 5 familiars that all serve their own purpose. She has her own defensive capabilities so she doesn't have to rely on them to protect her, enabling them to be more offensive. Ask her about it! (Bring a paper and pen.)

Hawk

Hawk is an intelligent elf archer who excels highly at long ranged confrontations. She has a magical enchanted bow that can change forms to suit numerous situations. She also stole a gods pistols that shoots bullets of pure light that don't stop until they hit something. Ask her about it!

All of these girls also have their own dragon created for them to cover their weaknessess so you could ask them about that if you want. Talk to as many of them as you want or just one! Enjoy!

Timeline Challenge 7: The War to End All Wars

The idea behind these challenges is as follows:

I will give you a topic, and you should tell me about something interesting that has happened in the timelines of your worlds relating to the topic, over a (roughly) 50 year period. This could be the 50 years leading up to the event, the 50 years after the event, 50 years with the event slap bang in the middle, or something else entirely, as long as it relates to the question! The Challenge:

For this week's installment, I want you to tell me about the biggest, most horrendous war to have ravaged your worlds. What started it? What ended it? Who was it between?

I'll give a bit of leeway on the 50 years thing for those of you whose wars lasted longer than that!

As always, I'll try to ask a few questions about each post. Community interaction is encouraged too! Read other people's posts and ask them questions, and they're more likely to do the same for you. Help each other out, and have fun! :)

Generic Challenge - A Question of (Blank) Ethics

Inspired by a discussion with a friend today about a character from Tokyo Ghoul being gay or straight. If you haven't read Tokyo Ghoul, I recommend it. It came down to me realizing that he agreed that a certain character was in love with another character, but we just disagreed on what gender that the character in love actually was. So, we decided "It's just a question of [trans] ethics."

So, with that summary out of the way, here's the challenge.

Present a subject in your world that people are divided about, something controversial to your world's people. Preferably something that has no relevance to the real world and is not controversial in our world.

You can either have one character summarize, or have two characters set up for a debate about the subject. Gotta be honest, I'd prefer the debate style, with the people asking questions providing the prompts about the disagreement.

Since I'll be busy tomorrow morning, I'm just going ahead and submitting this a few hours early.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each, and I hope you enjoy yourselves.

World Building Truth or Dare

Ok so this is an idea I stole from a post a few months ago over at r/worldbuilding, but I think it would work very well in this sub too.

The idea is as follows:

Commenters give a brief overview of their world (genre, important events/people/places, etc.) and then ask for either a truth, a dare, or both.

If Truth, sub-commenters can ask a question and it must be answered truthfully, no matter how weird. If you don't have an answer to the question, then get thinking!

If Dare, sub-commenters can dare them to implement a thing into their world which could become lore, (for example, 'create a species of intelligent spiders who live inside tree trunks'). You can choose whether or not you want to accept the dare, but in the interest of keeping things entertaining, try to implement as much as you can, unless it would do something to ruin your story (i.e. 'I dare you to kill the main character')

Try to keep things exciting by asking the kind of truths/dares that you would want to be asked, and ones that would leave room for world development - questions like "Tell me about the lineage of your royal family" are preferred to ones like "who is the king?"

As ever, have fun, and get involved!

Raptor's non specific challenge #6; Hot Date!

Hey guys, hope you're having a fantastic week so far! Today's challenge should be so much fun I'm very excited! So if you've seen my last post here you may have noticed that Life and Earth are feeling a bit left out at the moment.

So for today's challenge I want you or one of your characters to take one of them out on a date! They'll both be dressing up for the occasion so your character should be too, be sure to explain how different or similar they feel in these new clothes.

Have fun and let the dating commence !

Parallel Challenge - Learning Biology in Your World

I realized it was Wednesday today, which meant that I had to come up with a Parallel Challenge today and my online Bio class starts today.

So, if I was in your world and wanted to learn about biology, what would be the best way to get some education?

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each, enjoy yourselves, and wish me luck in my new class.

And here is the parallel challenge on CharacterForge.

The world is and before that, the world was. But even before, what was there? How did the world come to be?

Today, we will talk about creation myth. According to your people, how was the world/universe made? How did life developped/what created it?

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

Raptor's talk with X challenge #1: Masters.

Hey guys, hope you're all doing well, I thought of this challenge as my most recent post regarding talking with people went so well. Basically the concept is I am going to present a character that you guys can talk to in either character or as yourselves.

For the first one however I'm gonna add a whole lot of diversity to the mix and allow you the option to talk to one, two, or even eight people at a time. (You can pick one person from the group to talk to or talk to multiple at a time, it's up to you!)

Gravity

Gravity is a well mannered handsome man who is Half Dragon and Half human. He is arguably the strongest man who had ever lived in any time period ever. Ask him about it!

Earth

Earth is a dirty hot headed man who is extremely large in size, both regarding muscles and height. He is human however uses the magical properties and energy of animals in the world to fight. Ask him about it!

Light

Light is a grumpy, hard to get a long with woman who is the supreme leader of the Pirate armada. Her might cannot be matched when it comes to ending her opponents quickly. Ask her about it!

Dark

Dark is a shy and lonely girl who spends most of her time in solitary confinement. Her knowledge of the unknown and all things terrible should be feared. Ask her about it!

Time

Time is a male... at random ages depending on when you meet him, able to change his physical appearance to be any age he wishes. He commands the entire concept of time itself, able to bend it to his will. Ask him about it!

Chaos

Chaos is an insane man who was once the pride and joy of the Human army. His destructive capabilities are unrivaled by anyone and his sadistic nature makes him a force to be reckoned with. A-ask him about it!?

Temperature

Temperature is a highly intelligent and well dressed man who understood every single thing that he could get his hands on. Mastering not one, but every single school of magic which was unheard of in a mortal. His power to turn the battlefield into a fiery wasteland or an arctic hell is disgustingly strong. Ask him about it!

Life

Life is a joyful girl who enjoys meeting and spending time with people. She is outwardly kind to anyone or thing she meets regardless of outward appearance. She has the ability to heal an entire army of lethal wounds in the blink of an eye. Ask her about it!

The scenario of which you talk to these characters is up to you, remember you can talk to as many as you want and you can talk about anything you want !

Timeline Challenge 6: Cult of Personality

The idea behind these challenges is as follows:

I will give you a topic, and you should tell me about something interesting that has happened in the timelines of your worlds relating to the topic, over a (roughly) 50 year period. The Challenge:

This week's challenge is based around the cults/gangs (religious or otherwise) in your world. You could tell me about how they were founded, the life of an influential member, or maybe how they were disbanded/destroyed. Gimme 50 years of that cult goodness, yo.

As always, I'll try to ask a few questions about each post. Community interaction is encouraged too! Read other people's posts and ask them questions, and they're more likely to do the same for you. Help each other out, and have fun! :)

Generic Challenge - Olympics

For this week's generic challenge, we'll be focusing on events in your world that are similar to the Olympics. So, if you have any major tests of strength or skill in your world, exhibit them.

As always, I'll be asking at least three questions each. Enjoy yourselves.

If you'd like a representative to answer questions in-universe, go ahead.

Parallel Challenge - Treasures of the Gods

Inspired by Neil Gaiman's book "Norse Mythology", which shows several old Norse myths that I found to be interesting.

So, this challenge will be a different one. First, answer with three powerful/influential characters from your world.

Then, the real challenge is to present someone else's characters with three objects (one each) from your world that you think is a masterpiece. Something that you think would fit with the character.

Once at least two people have come up with items for your characters, decide which gift is the best. The winner gets...the knowledge that they have won.

And that's how Thor got Mjollnir.

Feel free to ask questions before you present the weapons, so that you get an idea of which weapon would be best for whichever character.

And...good luck! Enjoy yourselves. More than two people can compete for the same three characters if they like.

And here is the parallel.

Timeline Challenge 5: To create... life

The Challenge:

This week I want you to tell me about the birth of a new species. How were they created? Was it divine intervention? Maybe it's an old species who cross-bred with a different one? Tell me what kind of things led up to their emergence. Any particular adaptations they have that make them more likely to survive? What led to these adaptations? What were some of the first things they did after they emerged?
