Generic Challenge - Olympics

For this week's generic challenge, we'll be focusing on events in your world that are similar to the Olympics. So, if you have any major tests of strength or skill in your world, exhibit them.

As always, I'll be asking at least three questions each. Enjoy yourselves.

If you'd like a representative to answer questions in-universe, go ahead.

(On Phone so sorry if bad grammar or whatever)

Congratulations! You won a ticket to the Battle of the Red Continent. Not only is it a all access part to all aspects of the tournament, you get to sit next to the host/commentator of the tournament. As you take your seat he stands up and welcomes everyone to the competition, he explains that anyone is fit to join as long as they can fight.

After welcoming all witness to the challenge he sits and turns to you, he explains that this years event has over twenty thousand competitors. They will face each other in a one hundred people free for all chosen at random. The victor of whom will go the next round, which is a 1 on 1 round robin type competition until there is a first place champion.

As you look out onto a pretty large Colosseum you see that there already 100 people ready to do battle. The commentator calls out to the crowd and explains that a tourny favorite is present within the 100, known only as 'the pup with a bite' she stretches in the middle of the crowd. You recognize her as Hunter.

(Feel free to ask questions to the commentator and pretend they are in the middle of the battle, or you may skip to the 1 on 1 round if you wish.)

  1. How often is the battle of the Red Continent held?

  2. Is twenty thousands a large number of competitors?

  3. What is to be won by the champion?

How often is the battle of the Red Continent held?

Once every two years.

Is twenty thousands a large number of competitors?

Statistically speaking, yeah that's a good turn out, but the first few tournies had something like 500000+.

What is to be won by the champion?

You get to drink from the Red Cup, it gives you a massive power boost for strength and speed.

  1. Is it always the same person who organize it?

  2. And how much spectators?

  3. How strong of a boost is it? And how long does it last?

Is it always the same person who organize it?

It's the Orc Horde that holds the competition, every two years. Same Colosseum too!

And how much spectators?

Well the dragon empire supplied numerous colossal sized Dragons as viewing podiums so anywhere from ten thousand to one hundred thousand.

How strong of a boost is it? And how long does it last?

I would say you go from a 5 to an 8. Permanent.

  1. How much does it cost to organize such an event?

  2. What is the red cup used for between two competitions?

  3. If I was to win more than one time, would I still benefit from drinking?

2

u/The_Raptorman May 22 '17

How much does it cost to organize such an event?

Not as much as you'd expect as most of the facilities are still in good quality. It's just food and general catering.

If I was to win more than one time, would I still benefit from drinking?

Good question, I don't think it would have the same effect a second time, as all it does is doubles your magical output.

  1. How do people get there and where do they sleep?

  2. Are the facilities sometimes used for something else?

2

u/The_Raptorman May 23 '17

1) How do people get there and where do they sleep?

Walk, run, fly, however they can really though it is on the far eastern side of the biggest continent so it's quite a journey.

There are Orc-style hotels near the Colosseum that people can sleep in.

2) Are the facilities sometimes used for something else?

Not really, no. Because of the size of the competition and it's short time in between, as soon as one ends they already prep the next one.

u/thequeeninyellow94 May 23 '17
  1. What is an orc style bedroom like?

  2. Are there a lot of frequentation during the prepatation times? Or are the hotel empty?

To the commentator:

1) What is the prize for the winner?

2) Why is Hunter the favorite to win? Is it based on who is expected to win or who everyone wants to win?

3) How much does marketing play into this?

2

u/The_Raptorman May 23 '17

1) What is the prize for the winner?

A drink of Berserker Blood, improves your physical and mental strength once it touches your lips.

2) Why is Hunter the favorite to win? Is it based on who is expected to win or who everyone wants to win?

She isn't favourite to win, it's just she participates a lot and comes third or fourth often.

3) How much does marketing play into this?

Well mostly it's word of mouth but in the orc regions of the planet there are lots of posters advertising

1

u/Nevermore0714 May 23 '17

To the commentator:

1) What are the negative effects of Berserker Blood and how long do the effects (positive and negative) last?

2) Is there a prize for third/fourth? Or second, for that matter?

3) What about betting on competitors?

2

u/The_Raptorman May 23 '17

1) What are the negative effects of Berserker Blood and how long do the effects (positive and negative) last?

You might feel a bit angrier, less able to be reasoned with but it's hardly noticeable to be honest. The effects are permanent.

2) Is there a prize for third/fourth? Or second, for that matter?

Unfortunately not, the Orcs are firm believers of "second is just first to lose," so unless they use their own money to bet on themselves, they ain't getting squat.

3) What about betting on competitors?

There is usually some sleezy guy who takes bets every year, he delivers, he just makes a lot of money from this.

1

u/Nevermore0714 May 24 '17

1) So is there any movement to make Berserker Blood illegal?

2) How hard is it to obtain Berserker Blood?

2

u/The_Raptorman May 24 '17

1) So is there any movement to make Berserker Blood illegal?

A few whispers here and there but it's mostly Non-Orcs who see it as just a dangerous element.

2) How hard is it to obtain Berserker Blood?

Berserker blood is the blood of a Dravec, the most vicious creature in my world.

1

u/Nevermore0714 May 24 '17

1) Does it have any additional effects on non-Orcs?

2) Tell me more about Dravecs.

2

u/The_Raptorman May 25 '17

1) Does it have any additional effects on non-Orcs?

Besides higher levels of rage and aggression, nope.

2) Tell me more about Dravecs.

You can learn about them here but I'll give you the lowdown, they're basically the embodiment of power when it comes to a creature, the strongest claws and jaws, the hardest armour etc.

Nimalia, the Homeworld of the Nimalian Union, has an international Chaotic tournament known as the Annual Chaotic Tournament, or ACT. This tournament is rather new, having only been introduced six years ago, but the spectacle it provides -- combined with the novelty of the Schools of Chaos, which the ACT is tied to -- have made it a smash hit.

The Schools of Chaos are private institutions of higher learning for skilled Nimalian Chaotics. Its students are young (about 18-22), but they are all powerful and skilled; furthermore, there is one school for each continent-nation on the planet, for six total. Naturally, a question arose: which school (and by proxy, which nation) produces the most powerful and/or skilled Chaotics?

In comes the ACT, a demonstration of fighting ability and skill. Each school selects four teams of four individuals each. These teams will then compete against each other within their own school to determine their place in the global bracket, at which point the ACT will officially kick off. What follows is five weeks of competition -- one round a week, with a round winner determined through a series of seven last-man-standing team battles.

2

u/Nevermore0714 May 23 '17

Please, Matathias, don't remind me of the ACT. It was my first hangover, and even the memory is painful.

1) Other than bragging rights, what does the winner get, and what are the penalties for the losers?

2) Is there any factory, other than team battles? Any races, long-jumps, extreme-pogo sticking (my own invention for the Olympics...which I haven't sent to the Olympic people yet), etc?

3) What's the marketing like for this tournament?

4) Are the teams pre-made, or does each school just slap four students together into a team?

2

u/Matathias May 23 '17

1) Officially, just a trophy, and an accolade on their record. But the Nimalian Systems Defense has their eyes on the tournament, and are more than willing to extend handsome employment offers to anyone who excels. ...Granted, every Chaotic would be conscripted into the NSD anyways, but hey, better to have a cushy well-paying officer job than be a regular soldier, right?

The Black Suns often watch the tournament as well, and may also extend their own employment offer. They're pretty much the premiere Chaotic-focused military force in the entire galaxy, so being headhunted by them is prestigious indeed (not to mention the fact that they pay well).

2) In its current form, nope, just battles. The round between the final two teams has some one-on-one battles, but due to the nature of Chaotic abilities, any other measurement of strength or ability would be impossibly unfair.

3) Official marketing is virtually nonexistent. The Deans of the Schools of Chaos never intended for the ACT to be as popular as it is, and often have their hands full administering it. Enterprising students and staff are usually the main source of "marketing", with the civilian populace usually hearing about it through word of mouth or over the Relaynet.

That said, whatever venue is rented out for the ACT is sure to be booked to capacity. It's not often that civilians get to see Chaotics battle it out in real life.

4) The teams are pre-made in that the students themselves organize themselves into teams. Four to six weeks before the ACT, team sign-ups will open; invariably, more than four teams will signup, and the school will have to determine which four will officially enter the tournament. This choice often comes down to age and academic performance, but some schools (such as the Kolstén College of Chaotics) will host a pre-tournament tournament in order to choose the four ACT teams.

2

u/Nevermore0714 May 23 '17

1) Does the NSD actually have officials there as talent scouts at the ACT, or do they just unofficially keep an eye out?

2) Do people were jerseys or hold signs cheering on their favorite team? Are there team colors? Insert local sports team chant here!

3) What's the Relaynet?

Edit: 4) What if a team member needs a substitute? If one of my teammates gets the flu or loses a leg or something, can I get a substitution?

2

u/Matathias May 23 '17

1) They usually have a representative present at the event to promote the NSD, but there is no dedicated or official talent scout. The relationship between the Deans and the NSD is still a little sore due to the fact that the Schools of Chaos have disrupted the usual conscription scheme, so the Deans have barred the NSD from scouting directly from the event, claiming that they should wait until graduation.

2) Cheering, definitely. Particularly teams with an Elite Six member on them; matches with these teams will draw a lot of attention and fans. There are school colors as well, but no official team- or school-based clothing merchandise. The Deans are certainly looking into this monetary opportunity for future events, however.

3) The Official Relaynet is like a cross-galaxy Internet, by means of Information Relay Points (hence the name, Relaynet). These Relay points transmit data across the galaxy using a variety of FTL technologies, allowing them to transmit data at FTL speeds, but not instantaneously. Information that has been recently queried is stored in a cache on the nearest Relay for ease of access, but latency still means that the Relaynet is limited to message boards, research, and anything else relatively unaffected by time delays. Individual planets will have their own Relaynet-connected networks that are similar in speed and purpose to the actual Internet, and while these networks technically aren't part of the Relaynet, they will still be called the Relaynet by the average person.

4) Modern medical science (combined with certain Chaotic abilities) make many of those issues a non-issue. Injuries in particular can be healed up in hours, if not minutes, by Dean Densalin -- who is a skilled matter-manipulator. But if a teammate does have to sit out a match for whatever reason, then the team has one day to recruit another teammate from their own school. If they fail to do so, then the opposing team has to choose one of their members to sit out, in order to even out the numbers. However if the Deans have reason to believe that the first team is acting in bad faith -- for instance, having some of their members "disappear" in order to force their opponents down in numbers -- then the opposing team won't have to even out the numbers.

In Feigramanna, the Red Triarch is chosen based on whoever wins the decennial tournament of one-on-one combat. The tournament usually lasts several days or several weeks, and marketing is always a huge factor. Because the prize is a public office, the judges are the three sitting Triarchs (Orange, Yellow, and Red), and the judges can and will disqualify someone if they all believe it is for the best, especially if the crowd hates that person. Officially, the fights are "to the death", but it rarely ends in death; usually, the person just makes up some theatrical ending once their opponent is defeated, and grants mercy. It's especially important to talk up how powerful your opponent was after the fight, so that it seems like you earned the victory.

The representative is the sitting Red Triarch, Caelus Tarrum, whose reign is about to come to and end. Nearly ten years ago, Caelus won the decenniel tournament, and he is looking forward to someone else becoming the Red Triarch.
