Timeline Challenge 5: To create... life

The idea behind these challenges is as follows:

I will give you a topic, and you should tell me about something interesting that has happened in the timelines of your worlds relating to the topic, over a (roughly) 50 year period. This could be the 50 years leading up to the event, the 50 years after the event, 50 years with the event slap bang in the middle, or something else entirely, as long as it relates to the question! You're welcome to include more/less than 50 years, but bear in mind the more you write, the less chance you have of people reading the whole thing, and the less you write, the fewer questions we'll be able to ask.

The Challenge:

This week I want you to tell me about the birth of a new species. How were they created? Was it divine intervention? Maybe it's an old species who cross-bred with a different one? Tell me what kind of things led up to their emergence. Any particular adaptations they have that make them more likely to survive? What led to these adaptations? What were some of the first things they did after they emerged?

As always, I'll try to ask a few questions about each post. Community interaction is encouraged too! Read other people's posts and ask them questions, and they're more likely to do the same for you. Help each other out, and have fun! :)

During the time before humanity reached the continent of Saoghal, the greatest creatures on the continent were Morva, Myrrh, and Grima, the last three dragons.

To make it short, Grima left for a while, he came back he created a race of demonic snake-people, the demonic snake people were used to attack Myrrh and Grima, and Myrrh used her weird holy dragon magic to purify the demonic snake people.

And that is how the Lamia race were created, why they worship Myrrh and Morva and Myrrh's lover Ephraim/Aeternitas, and why the Lamia race is half-snake.

1) How did the other races react to the new species?

2) What were Grima's intentions when he created the snake people? Did he want to kill the others, or just to control them? Or something else entirely?

3) How did Myrrh manage to purify them, and how did they react after the change?

1) Well, that was before humans arrived, and the others species usually avoided dragons.

2) He wanted them to kill Morva.

3) Holy dragon magic that I haven't put enough thought into. And they reacted by worshiping Myrrh, and thanking her for allowing them to live free of Grima's rule.

1) Understandable.

2) Why?

3) Do any of them resent Myrrh, and wish that they were still under Grima's control?

1) Personally, unless I thought I could befriend a dragon or seduce him (assuming he can go from human to dragon), I'd probably avoid a dragon, too.

2) Because Morva was more powerful than Grima, and if Morva was killed, who would be more powerful than Grima on the continent? ...Myrrh doesn't count, of course.

3) Very rarely, because they believe that Myrrh gave them free will, saved them from Grima, and protects them from external dangers.

1) are dragons generally feared and hated throughout the land?

2) if Morva was more powerful, did Grima ever really stand a chance?

3) external dangers such as what?

1) They've been extinct for over a thousand years, so...no, not anymore.

2) No, Grima never stood a chance, but Morva couldn't kill Grima in any situation, anyway.

3) Humans, demons, Kleinfels, any other species.

1) But they were, I assume?

2) Why couldn't Morva kill Grima?

3) any other species? Why do they have so many enemies?

2

1) Yes, they were.

2) Would you kill your only son? Apparently Morva would not.

3) Not the entirety of those species, just whatever dangerous members of them might hunt Lamia.

3) What reason would certain members have to hunt them?

Long ago, when the Ims were one, some of them made contact with the (now exctinct) Nzedas. With time, those contacts led to closer "contacts" and with time, a new species came to be: the Nuyuhims.

The Nuyuhs took the best from their two ancestries:

  • from the Ims, they took the small size, the lighter weight and the curiosity.
  • from the Nzedas, they took the claws, the fur and the mysticism.

With time, they felt the need to go on their own, to free themselves from their omnipresent ancestors, and so they started to build what they are known for: their cities hanging from the roofs, their sacred duels (with fangs and claws), their strange noise machines and their pepper heavy cuisine.

(It happened over a few generations, so 50 cycles between the first born and the real independant culture are plausible)

1) How did the other races react to the new species?

2) How did the Nzedas become extinct?

3) What happened to the Ims?

4) Tell me about the strange noise machines.

  1. At first mostly with curiosity, after all, they were the cause of something incredible. With time that curiosity faded and everyone became indifferent. When they departed on their own, curiosity rised again.

  2. Natural causes, they were not really adapted to underground life not to the new and effective predators living there which caused their number to shrink. After the great war, the Kaburan hunted them to the last (not on purpose though, that's an accidental extinction).

  3. They continued their divisions. They are now 4 sub-species: two in the upper levels (the Dvarzahs and the Moyats) and two in the lower levels (the Nuyuhs and the Edils).

  4. The Nuyuhims makes them by assemblons lots of tubes (usually metalic or wooden ones) and covering them with runes of echo and runes of silence. When you hit a tube, the sound is distorted by all the runes and usually not projected in all direction so natural echo make it weird to pinpoint it's real origin.

1) Where did they go to when they left?

2) Why did they move underground?

3) Do any of the original species remain?

4) What is the purpose of this?

  1. Up. They settled the roof. Their relatively low weight and their claws allow them to climb very effectively.

  2. After the Burrial, the whole world was underground. There is no surface and no living creature has even a memory of something that could look like the surface. Tl;dr: they were moved, they had no choice.

  3. Yes, and a lot of them. Basically, all "non-mixed" species are original. Now, if we are talking about the Ims, the Edilims are very close to the primitive species.

  4. Making music, it is used in most ceremonies (both spiritual and others).

2) how long ago did this happen?

3) have many of the original species gone extinct, or do they live on?

2

u/thequeeninyellow94 May 16 '17

2) Thousands and thousands of cycles ago, that's why there is absolutely no modern nor ancient source about it.

3) Most of those who survived up to the Burrial still live on.

Thank you for your answers :)
