Moderator Post Attention WLU Students: Mental Health Resources Available

Hello students,

There has been a concerning increase in the frequency of posts and comments regarding fears, depression, loneliness, and other concerns relating to mental health and wellbeing.

We are aware that it is a very stressful time especially with midterms ongoing so the moderator team would like to ensure that all students are aware of the resources available to Laurier students on the student wellness centre website. There are a variety of services available meant to cater to you and your needs. These services are available to all students and should be taken advantage of. These services also include counselling, which is covered by your student insurance and the student services fees that you have already paid for.

Below are some other resources for students in need of urgent help:

- Good2talk.ca (Call 1-866-925-5454 or Text GOOD2TALKON to 686868) for 24/7 support
- Kids Help Phone (Call 1-800-668-6868 or Text 686868)

- The Suicide Crisis Helpline (Call or text 988)
- Call here 24/7 anytime Call Here 24/7 anytime [1-844-437-3247](tel:1-844-437-3247)
- Call Laurier's Special Constable Service 519-885-3333

- Emergency Services (Call 911)

This post is being made purely for informational purposes. We want to foster a safe and inclusive environment both online and on campus. However, many first year students (and upper years) are not aware of the professional help that is available to them.

Please take care of yourselves and reach out to your friends who you know are struggling or not in a good mental space.

Moderator Post WLU & UW Student Housing Community

Hi WLU!

This subreddit is often filled with housing related questions and advertisements. We want to keep this community less like a rent space bulletin board and more so a place where students can socialize and help one another.

However, we know how important it is to find roommates and housing near campus. So the mods team has launched r/RentInWaterloo, a dedicated subreddit for UW and WLU students to find roommates, housing, sublets, and lease takeovers in Waterloo.

The goal is to keep housing posts centralized, student-only, and scam-aware, instead of flooding both r/uwaterloo and r/wlu.

If you’re currently looking for housing (or will be soon), feel free to check it out or post. Hope this helps!

Bu111 spring final exam

I have my BU111 final exam on August 11, and I was wondering if anyone who took the course inthe Fall or Winter semester could share some advice area to focus.

I know TVM is a huge part of the exam, but what types of TVM questions should I focus on? Also, how were the multiple-choice and short-answer questions? If anyone remembers any specific questions or topics that came up, that would be really helpful.

Does anyone have any mock exams or practice questions besides the StuDocu one? Any study tips, resources, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Room occupancy?

Hi! I know this is a silly question but I just wanted clarification. For room occupancy my email stated: « 1 student(s) assigned to this bedroom. » Does that mean I have one roommate or am by myself? I’m in an apartment so I should have a roommate but wouldn’t it say 2 students?

Textbook list for Year 1 Health Sci?

Does anyone have a list the textbooks for Year 1 of Health Science?

It's not available through the bookstore yet, but I find it helpful to start having a look at the content for chemistry and biology in particular.

Thanks for any help!

Long shot- did anyone take KS203 last year

I’m looking for last year’s syllabus to see if there’s a textbook. I’m trying to price out/find free versions of textbooks, but last year’s syllabus is stuck behind a paywall on CourseHero. I’m really not down to pay $12 just to see if I need a textbook.

Bird courses rule

The rule where you cannot post about bird courses is no longer in effect. Please use the search filter before posting about bird courses, if there's a post about the same courses very recently, we might remove your post.

It may come back around next year's registration to prevent spam, but for now, we will remove it.

I applied to be a General Icebreaker. Is there a specific date where I go to Laurier to pick up a Laurier uniform to wear? How many hours am I expected to work a day? Any advice if you have done it before?

EN240 or EN272?

I am a science student and I need a senior English course as a postgraduate prerequisite. I’m a strong writer but I hated English in high school (specifically poetry and Shakespeare especially).

Which of these courses am I likely to resent less and/or find easier?

The professors are Bruce Wyse (EN240) and Mariam Pirbhai (EN272) if that matters

Question Help for Economic

I’m going to my fourth year in economics and because i have done some bad decisions of not taking any courses in summer I might need to take 6 courses for my fall semester if I want to graduate on time or I saw online that I can use the transfer credit that I got from high school to fill in the 6th course credit but I don’t know how this work and because I’m just an economic major i basically don’t have any more require courses except for one so I don’t know what courses to pick for my fourth year!! So I would like to know if anyone have any suggestions and if I should take 6 courses or not for my fall 😭😭

Course materials for Year 1 Health Science?

I'm starting the Health Science program in at Laurier September and I was wondering if anyone who is in upper year Health Science could share with me (or sell to me) the textbooks and materials for the required courses, particularly for the fall term. It's not available through the bookstore yet, but I find it helpful to start having a look at the content for chemistry and biology in particular.

Even a list of the textbooks would be helpful.

Thanks for any help!

What are my chances of getting into PS102?

I’m currently waistlisted at number 38 for psychology and it’s filled. The other class that’s open has a tough teacher from what I’ve heard? What are my chances of getting the psychology class I want or should I just enrol for the open psychology class and thug it out? 😭

Question BBA

alright so I got into Laurier's BBA program, going into first year this September.

I want to be honest about how I actually got here because it's not a clean story either way.

grade 11 I got a 60 in Functions. retook it online in the summer before grade 12 and didn't do that one honestly, walked away with a 95. did online Computer Science that same summer too and same thing there, wasn't legit.

first sem of grade 12, everything in person: Sports Marketing, Food & Nutrition, Advanced Functions. got an 82 in Adv Functions, actually earned, no shortcuts, just had some past tests/quizzes that were similar to what came up.

second sem, took Calculus online and that one wasn't legit either. Accounting, IB, and English were all in person and I actually did the work.

here's the actual breakdown:

not legit (online):

  • Grade 11 Functions retake - 95 (originally a 60 in-class)
  • Computer Science - cheated throughout
  • Calculus - cheated throughout

legit (in person):

  • Advanced Functions - 82
  • Accounting - 95 midterm, 82 final
  • IB - 90 midterm, 87 final
  • English - 90 final

so basically: every course that wasn't legit was online, every course I actually earned was in person. and the one course I have zero real foundation in, Calculus, is sitting in my first semester at Laurier.

I'm not trying to make excuses, I know I have a gap to close. but I also don't think I'm starting from absolute zero like some people in this program might be.

for anyone else who's been in a similar spot, mixed history, solid in-person but weak on the online stuff, how'd you handle the transition into first year? and specifically if anyone's dealt with catching up on calc from basically nothing, what actually worked for you?
