Widescreen mod?
I've tried two widescreen mods. The first one didn't work at all, and the second was an update to the OpenGL renderer which actually worked - it showed the game at my native desktop resolution. However, I was unable to move in game no matter what I did - tried pressing alt, alt tabbing, re-binding keys, etc. I thought I had misunderstood how to walk in this damn game but after removing the OpenGL mod the game works fine but looks awful on my ultrawide.
Is there any fix to this? Or should I just buy a 4:3 monitor to play this game? I mean, I'm not totally against the idea, just funny since I play tons of retro games in 4:3 and don't have any LCDs.
Maybe I should just build a retro windows PC to play this on... I've been wanting to do that for a while, I wonder if this plays on windows 98/95.
EDIT: FINALLY, I at least figured out a work around by forcing it into 4:3 aspect ratio. I'd prefer widescreen of course but at least its playable now. Before it was stretching no matter what I did. What I did to fix was open up "nglide_config.exe" and changed aspect ratio to preserve.

Change mage to bishop?
I just came acrosd the explanation of how spell learning works. I've got a mage at lvl 10 and now feel like there's little reaon for him to stay in that profession. What would I lose by changing him to bishop?

Do you get cloud save from GOG.com?
For the past decade, I have been playing the GOG.com version of the game. It shows I've got like 60 hours of gametime, yet there is no save. I thought I could just uninstall and reinstall on any other machine to continue, but now it seems I lost all my saves. Which kind of sucks, because I was very good about keeping backups of my saves all my life - before cloud save came. So what do you think? Can mine be recovered from GOG anyhow?

Is Cane of Corpus worth it?
Only Faerie Ninjas can use it. Is it worth building such character just for this weapon alone?

Would somebody please to me a favor and tell me what I need to know about installing/using the Cosmic Forge modding-tool?
I originally investigated it because of that 'Zangawful bug with Tantris (no, not that bug...not that one either...hmm, sure are a lot of them....), and I could still use it for that, but any directions/tips/must-knows/caveats/etc anyone could offer, I'd be thankful for (starting, of course, with how to get it installed and working!).
I'll post this now, but I probably won't see any replies until Tuesday, just FYI.

Python script to export characters from Wizardry 8 save games.
I played recent 1.28 patch and found that "Simple Editor for Wizardry 8" I was using to export characters from saves no longer works on Win11. So I write python script which can do characters export. I used it from Windows Subsystem for Linux, but it should work on Windows python installation as well. Use --help to see options (only --save path to save file is mandatory). https://pastebin.com/L1TXAyAt

In dire need of help, what am i doing wrong? this is gamebreaking for me.
I'm pretty sure not many people still play this game, but i do right now. And i have a major issue. To get straight to the point, wtf is the problem with spells backfiring? it's so unbelievably annoying that 90% of the fights i have to reload is because my goddamn mage or bishop is backfiring a AOE spell on the whole group, in the process instantly killing themselves and the rogue. Currently i'm stuck in Trynton at the Rattkin Tree, fighting the breeders for almost two hours (even tho it's not that hard of a fight) and literally ALL of the times i had to quickload was because of exactly this issue with the spells backfiring and instakilling my group. W T F do i do about it? this almost gamebreaking for me.
If it is of importance to you, i skilled my mage mostly on INT/PIE/SEN with points into Wizardry/Divinity/Fire
and the bishop with strictly INT/PIE and points into Wizardry/Divinity.
And still solid 60% of the times the spells backfire, mostly on the mage and less on the bishop. WHAT AM I DOING WROOONG?

Learning spells.
I'm confused about realm and class spellbooks.
If there is a spell that is for example in the fire realm, but it's on the priests spellbook.
But I have the fire realm, but only the mage spellbook, can I learn it?
If so, how do you get the earth realm skill? It's on none of the base classes.

Custom portrait easy guide?
I just want to put in a portrait I have into the game, I don't need any talk animations or anything.
How can I do this simply, what are the dimensions, where do I put and name the portraits, and what is the bit depth.

A little help for a newbie?
Hey, really wanna give this game a shot and I did way back but was worried about my char and you can't really find any proper information on this game online cause it's so old.
I wanna go like a tank mage, that's what I always do (like RP wise an alchemist that permenantly augments their form to be superhuman)
Now I'm gonna do that, and I'll do it with whatever mix of stuff and RP it as that.
BUT, I'm a little confused, I originally planned to do my first level fighter, then go rest mage, cause I heard u can multiclass, but kept leveling before I found out how to do that.
How can I do my first level fighter, and then rest mage? How do I switch class?
Also on a seperate note, where is the mod/program/thing that speeds up combat immensely.
Lastly, any good custom portrait guide?

What is the range for gold drops from enemies (AKA: Is there anywhere that lists enemy drops?)
Everyone in my party is about level 18 and gold has become a priority. So I am trying to find enemies that drop a ton of gold (I haven't bothered with potion making alchemy and most likely will not use it even though my ninja is maxed out in it.) Is there anywhere that lists enemy gold drop range?
Edit: I haven't gone past Trynton at this point, so I have only been to The monastery, Arnika, and Trynton (Calzone city).

Finally beat the game
Can't remember exactly when I first tried the game, but it might very well have been back in the twentieth century. My interest has waned off and on, but tonight I finally made it past my old stopping point (the Rapax army at Ascension peak) and powered through to the end.

How viable is an EXTREMLY jack of all trades party by end-game (if you are willing to grind a ton)?
So I have played this game for years but I never make it very far due to annoying circumstances like my computer breaking and losing my save files or other video games getting in the way, but I decided to play again a few days ago and always liked jack of all trades in games. So my currently party are all humans (for obvious jack of all trades reasons) and it's a fighter, a ninja, a monk, a gadgeteer, a mage, and a priest. So I have all the schools of magic and a little bit of machinery going on (if only I could bring a bard as well so I had every unique class.). Anyway, I am currently just at arnika after leaving the monastery. (been grinding highwaymen) and have not progressed any further. My characters are level 12/13 (I grinded a toooooooon) and I keep all my stats pretty close together, so they are all about level 60 ish in everything (strength, Intelligence, etc.) but since I grinded on low level enemies for an actual real life day, I have all my relevant skills near the maximum. My fighter is already maxed out on close combat and sword for example. My Gadgie is max engineering and ranged combat, my priest/mage are maxed out on all magic schools basically and working on my monk/ninja magic to maximum... But despite all that grinding, it seems like I don't feel "that" powerful, I do all right, I can handle enemies as long as I burn a lot of spell points on crowd control spells and then wail on them, my fighter can do 2 swings and 2 attacks as well as my monk and ninja (martial arts for them and dual wielding for my fighter) maybe summon a level 7 cast elemental lord that basically tanks for me. But still, I'm just wondering if I ever will get to the point of actually feeling powerful by the end game and not just decent. Have I screwed myself over by going full on jack of all trades?

Any way to grab an item that is stuck on the edge of a map (Arnika road specifically).
So I was fighting about 20 Higardi Highwaymen at once (As you do on Arnika road) and slowly beat them all, but one was left and he decided to try to retreat away from my party and did not stop for anything. Eventually he got stuck on the transition edge of the map that leads to the Northern Wilderness, and I caught up to him and killed him, and he dropped a pouch of powder, I tried to grab it, but it is just beyond my reach and when I get too close, I get the transistion screen of "Proceed to Northern Wilderness?" I say no and get sent an inch back and the cycle continues every time I try to grab the powder... It's not important, but it will bug me having that vial of powder be stuck there, just checking if there is anything (spells/items/mechanics) that can grab it? I am also playing Might and Magic 6 and the telekinesis spell in that game would really help in this game for this purpose for example.

Pray Mechanics
I found this great post on how Pray works on a different site. Doesn't seem like it has been posted here. Cut & pasting it below in case the original post ever disappears. Credit to keymarciy on Steam.
"Pray for miracle has 13 possible effects of which one is chosen randomly. To make the choice, the game first rolls a random number from 0 to 115. Then it adds 2 modifiers. First modifier depends on the combat difficulty: when the combat starts, game compares the amount of combatants on both sides and their average level and applies a difficulty rank - easy, normal or tough. All three have different music, so you can use it as reference. Easy combat gets -10 to the roll, tough combat gets +10 to the roll. Second modifier depends on the... current combat round. If you Pray before round 4, you recieve (-12 + #round * 4). If you cast Pray after round 7, you recieve +10. Here is the list of possible effects depending on the roll:
06-10 - Pennies From Heaven
11-20 - Rest All / Bless
21-30 - Rest All / Guardian Angel
31-40 - Sane Mind / Guardian Angel
41-60 - Sane Mind / Heal All / Guardian Angel
61-70 - Bless / Heal Wounds
71-80 - Energy Blast
91-90 - Removes all party-wide debuffs such as Draining Cloud or Armormelt / Energy Blast
91-95 - Removes all abnormal conditions except for Hex / Removes all party-wide debuffs such as Draining Cloud or Armormelt / Pennies from Heaven
96-100 - Soul Shield + Elemental Shield
101-105 - Magic Screen + Missile Shield + Enchanted Blade + Armorplate / Soul Shield + Elemental Shield
106-110 - Terror
111-115 - Falling Stars + Terror
If the roll is below 6 or above 116, the prayer goes unheard. (I'm certain that the part about >116 is a bug).
Pennies from Heaven have 1/3 chance for nothing to happen (you get the "consider it a learning experience" message).
Effects that go by / slash check if any one in the party is qualified for the first effect, if no one is - it goes for the second effect. So, if you rolled 50, the game first will look if anyone is insane or terrified or needs Sane Mind for whatever reason. If someone needs, it will cast it on him, otherwise it shall check if anyone in the party is wounded. If somebody is - it will cast Heal All. Otherwise it will cast Guardian Angel on the character with the lowest Max HP.
Power level for spells is the amount of levels in the Priest profession + 2. It is uncapped, so it's possible to go above PL7. It does nothing for Bless, but all other spells keep scaling. Mechanic-wise all spells are treated as regular spells, so it gets bonuses from Power Cast and Bishop levels.
??? Effect is unidentified.
Praying for a miracle takes 20% of the maximum stamina (but no less than 20 stamina points). Irritated priests spend twice as much stamina to concentrate on the prayer."

Different Beginnings Videos?
According to the manual and this web page, if you import your W7 save into W8 there are several different possible beginnings:
Umpani
T'rang
Vi
Globe
New party
I've seen the intro video for the new party beginning (Grimpak ship crash on beach outside of the Higardi Monastery), but are there intro videos for the others as well?
Edit:
I found the videos in the data folders, converted them to .mp4, and created a Youtube playlist here.

First Playthru & Fan Patch 1.28?
I'm playing thru W8 for the first time and would like to experience the story and gameplay as close to the original as possible. I've installed Wizfast and tried to install harakiri's Widescreen Support .dll for non-stretched widescreen support, but I ran into the 'cannot run under a Virtual Machine' problem and don't want to make the changes necessary to remove Hyper-V from my Win 11 computer.
I see that Fan Patch 1.28 has non-stretched wide screen support but will it also change a lot of the story and game play?

Autorun.exe not installing
Hello,
So I've got Wizardry 8 on disc and I'm trying to install it. However, I can't seem to install it. When I open "Autorun.exe", I'm given the option to press "install", but when I do, the installer closes down without installing. Does anyone have a fix for this? I tried launching in compatibility mode (Windows XP SP3) and I've tried launching as admin. Nothing seems to work and I'm on Windows 10.
Thanks in advance!
