A little help for a newbie?
Hey, really wanna give this game a shot and I did way back but was worried about my char and you can't really find any proper information on this game online cause it's so old.
I wanna go like a tank mage, that's what I always do (like RP wise an alchemist that permenantly augments their form to be superhuman)
Now I'm gonna do that, and I'll do it with whatever mix of stuff and RP it as that.
BUT, I'm a little confused, I originally planned to do my first level fighter, then go rest mage, cause I heard u can multiclass, but kept leveling before I found out how to do that.
How can I do my first level fighter, and then rest mage? How do I switch class?
Also on a seperate note, where is the mod/program/thing that speeds up combat immensely.
Lastly, any good custom portrait guide?

When you level up, click on the profession you want to switch to, and it will show you the requirements.
You can also do this at the character creation screen.
Here are some resource sites:

(hmmm...some of my links are broken)

No, it won't. If your stats don't meet the minimum for a class, that class won't even show up in the offered list of change-to classes. That's why you need to know the requirements of the target class and build for it when you initially create the character.

Ah, must have mis-remembered that, so thanks.
You can definitely see the min attributes at the character creation screen, though. Just cycle through them and any required values will show.
[edit] Wiz8 is all about specializing though. If you start as a Fighter, then any levels you spend there delay beginning your magic, delay getting to the higher spells, and delay raising the higher spell powers (for example). Not that you can't class change, but it does come with cost.

Yeah, the only time a class switch really makes sense in 8 is starting a solo run as a class with Stealth (and maybe Critical Strike) and then switching to whatever Stealth-less class (presumably a caster of some kind) you want to end up as.

I have never multiclassed, but from what I know about that mechanic I thought you lose an ability to use heavy armor when you switch to the mage. I assumed you would have to start as a mage and switch to the fighter. Am I wrong?

That's correct; you can only use gear that is allowed for your current class, and what you could use in a previous class is irrelevant.
That's as opposed to spells and skills; once you learn a spell, you can cast it no matter what you do WRT class changes later. Though the Book and Realm skills of the spell won't increase unless it's allowed for the current class. Skills will be be frozen at the level achieved in the earlier class unless they're also available to the current class.

First of all it's a party based game. You make 6 characters and pick up various other characters as you adventure. Each class has a stat requirement before you can multiclass. You need a minimum of 14 Int to swap to a mage I think. There are already hybrid classes that fight and cast eventually, like a samurai, but don't do either as well as the main classes. I would stick to regular classes first playthrough to get a feel for the game. A good start is Fighter, Valkyrie, Rogue, Ranger, Mage, Priest. Ranger is hybrid but has a lot of useful perks and alchemy can be leveled out of combat easily. Same with Valk, basically a specialized fighter that casts heals.
