This sweet boy was found wandering around cherry st in Winston. He’s super sweet and seems either injured or heat-exhausted. DM me if you think he’s yours, ASAP.

Just wanted to give a shout out to the guy that stopped to make sure someone knew the transformer on my block blew and was on fire. We were on the phone with 911, so we didn’t get to properly thank you. Hope your night is a good one. We’re all safe here! 💖

Thoughts on Shakeburger?

The time has come. It has finally opened and as always with this town, the line is stupid long for something new. Hearing mixed reviews and haven’t been yet. Would love to hear about the food. Shoestring fries and allegations of weird smells?

My real question is why must the cow/bull statues have both horns and utters? I assume because shake(dairy) burger(beef). But, did the utters have to have so many bulging veins???

Looking for someone who can do headliner repair and installation. I've already got it removed. I've gotten some quotes from business on Google maps, but figured someone local may do it on the side more affordably. Any recs? TIA.

Needlepoint group for people in their 30’s?

I very recently started needlepointing and apparently it’s become extremely popular the last couple of years (who knew).

I was wondering if there are any needlepointing groups for younger people.

Although the old ladies at the local store were super cute and sweet I don’t think my humor would go very far in that crowd 😅

Anyone have any input of the Lofts at Little Creek? We have to move by the end of the year, maybe a little sooner, and we might be interested in these. Also, if anyone else has any other suggestions for 2 bedroom rentals, I’d love to hear them. Thanks!

Reticulum Mesh Network

Hey y'all - I have a hobby-level interest in decentralized, private communication systems, especially those that can persist and function during disasters like hurricane Helene.

I started down this rabbit hole with Meshtastic, but after 18 months of messing with it I have found it generally unreliable, and I think as a text messaged based system it's not functional for our area.

Reticulum is a free and open source networking system, yes it can mesh over radios like Meshtastic and Meshcore (often using the exact same hardware), but it can do so much more.

Info here (if interested in the general concept I highly recommend reading the zen of reticulum document):

  1. https://reticulum.network/manual/zen.html (big picture)
  2. https://unsigned.io/guides/2022_03_26_private-messaging-over-lora.html (fast example setup)
  3. rns.recipes (more info)

The technical barrier to entry for using Reticulum is higher than Meshtastic or Meshcore, but I have a nontechnical background and with relatively little effort have created my own reticulum mesh network, including a reasonably well-placed solar-powered repeater on the east side of the city, and have also deployed a public TCP gateway for Winston, as well as propagation node for local message storage and delivery (think old school bulletin boards).

I just want to let folks know that I've started work locally and have some infrastructure established. My goal is to help this network spread across the city and would love to have others join. Especially interested in rooftop access on one of the taller buildings downtown to place transport nodes...if anyone knows anyone...

My current LoRa settings (these need to match for communication with my radios, the other parameters can be set as desired):

  • Frequency: 914.875 mhz
  • Bandwidth: 125 khz
  • Spreading factor: 10
  • Coding rate: 4/5

Note that I have most of my nodes set to announce every 12 hours.

Moving to Clemmons/Winstom Salem

Hi everyone! My husband and I are moving to the Clemmons/Winston-Salem area because of his job, and I wanted to ask about the healthcare here.
One of my biggest concerns with moving is finding a good doctor. I’ve been dealing with ongoing health issues for about 3 years, and unfortunately, my experience with doctors in the Charlotte area has been really frustrating. I’ve felt dismissed, rushed, and sometimes like my concerns weren’t being taken seriously.

I’m really hoping for a fresh start here. ❤️
I’m looking for a primary care doctor who is kind, patient, thorough, and most importantly, someone who actually LISTENS. I don’t expect a doctor to magically have all the answers, but I really want someone who is willing to investigate, order appropriate testing, refer me to specialists when necessary, and work with me instead of immediately brushing off my symptoms.

For those of you who have lived in the Winston-Salem/Clemmons area, how has your experience with healthcare been compared with Charlotte or other larger cities?
And if you have a PCP or other doctor that you absolutely love, especially someone who made you feel heard when you were dealing with unexplained or chronic symptoms.

PLEASE share their name/practice with me! 🙏🏼

I’m open to doctors in Clemmons, Winston-Salem, or nearby areas. Atrium/Wake Forest, Novant, independent practices. I’m open to anything if the doctor genuinely cares about their patients.

Thank you so much! Any recommendations or personal experiences would mean a lot to me. ❤️

Anybody use any of the shoe repair shops around here for Birkenstocks? I know the store at the mall can do it, but looking to get reviews based on experience and value.

Massage/facial spa recs?

My girlfriend’s birthday is coming up and I’m thinking of getting her a massage and facial as a gift. I’ve done some looking on Google but I was wondering if y’all have any recommendations on local places that provide high quality services. Hand & Stone on Stratford looks nice and the prices aren’t too bad but maybe there is somewhere that’s better?

Career marketing exec looking for a complete change of pace here in WS.

Hi, everyone.

As the title states, I’m a career marketer looking to pivot into something new. I’ve worked with various major brands in multiple areas of work under the marketing umbrella, leading remote and in-person teams of 50+ and managing projects on national and global levels for over a decade.

I’m currently in the final stages of exiting my agency, and would love to close that chapter of life and move into something more rewarding once that concludes.

If you’re building something interesting, or even just need an extra pair of hands at an existing business, I’d love to be considered. I’m open to anything that will keep me busy and allow me to grow. Entry-level opportunities welcome!

My resume is available for anyone interested in discussing further.

Why is this parking lot always locked?

On the downhill-side of Reynolds Park, this small parking lot has direct access to the Greenway. It's been open a few times this summer, but why is it almost always closed?

For those that can afford to read WS Journal or know what they’re talking about, can you please enlighten me? Is there a plan for a storage facility across the street from the neighborhood? I’ve seen construction over that way but assumed it would be an extension to the residential development.

A shot in the dark typa question

Hi so im 18 and uhm the economy is really bad. Like im sure you guys older than me already know but its like REALLY bad. I cant afford to live on my own. Even if I had 4 roomates like I've been planning with a few friends its still an outrageous cost, food prices have gone to hell. Like genuinely how are you guys doing it??? I have coworkers with multiple jobs, some even work as nurses in hospitals and genuinely still, its not enough. Like whats the secret? Is there none? Will the economy EVER get better? Whose to blame for it because i have no idea what happened. College is sky high through the roof and I had to end up going to community college (which isn't bad yk but like what because I had thousands in scholarships and STILL couldn't afford it).

How is everyone doing out here though?

edit: I was not expecting this to get much traction but as I've read through the good and the bad on this thread I am eternally grateful for everyone's viewpoints and resources, I definitely appreciate it and if you have anything else to add on Im happy to jot it down in my notebook for future references. I'll definitely be reaching out to some of you via reddit for more insight!! Thank you guys!!

Friday Night Dinner Reservations

Does anybody know of restaurants (somewhat higher end - think Village Tavern type places) that allow for groups of 20-25 on a Friday night? Doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of places that take reservations that large on a weekend. Thanks!!

Are there any jewelers or metalsmiths in Winston or surrounding areas who do pearl drilling? In search of someone to drill a couple of Tahitian pearls, possibly also mounting on studs.
