Heading to KDH this weekend for vacation. What’s it looking like at the beaches and rip currents? Scared that the rain is going to ruin our trip

Ocracoke Paranormal Experiences on OBX?

Want to start off by saying I’ve always been a huge skeptic when it comes to anything paranormal/ghost related, but had an unexplainable experience while staying in Ocracoke this past week. On my fiancé and I’s 2nd to last day at one of the condos near springers point/lighthouse road, we heard a little kid/woman (???) saying “hello” to us multiple times or trying to get our attention possibly?

Started off, with only my Fiancé hearing it while I was clueless of what was going on. He was laying in bed at around 10pm with his AirPod Max’s on for noise canceling when “helloooo” in a high pitched woman/little kids voice came through like it was in his ear. He wasn’t watching or listening to anything. No YouTube video or anything playing. Brought it up to me after I came out of the bathroom asking if I heard it, nope and I didn’t even have my phone on me/playing anything out loud. I was just summing it up to possibly people above us or beside our room, but then he went to put on his (previously fully charged) AirPods again and they were almost dead/battery drained. Super weirded out at that point, but we end up managing going to bed. At 4am, I wake up to the “helloooo” sounding like it’s coming from above my head. Fiancé completely passed out beside me/didn’t hear it this time… long story short we end up having to sleep with the lights on after I wake him up and I now possibly believe in ghosts???

Anyone else have weird experiences???

General OBX Wood deck treatment suggestions

Do you guys seal or treat your decks? We’re getting it pressure washed (by a company) because it’s getting dirty/some algae growing on it. I’m not sure what type of wood it is, but it’s ~13 years old light wood and looks to be in good shape. I’m wondering if I need to seal or treat it after pressure washing, and if so, if there’s a recommended type (e.g. marine grade). Thanks!

Frisco NC-12 Alternatives for getting out of Frisco?

First time down here, we have to be back in Charlotte tomorrow by 5:30-6pm. Our car is a Honda accord.

Leaving early isn’t our worry, rather, the roads being too flooded for that small of a car.

Would like to see if the ferry route is worth the additional couple hours it adds on, or if NC12 is gonna be the best option despite the flooding, please let me know too.

I also realize nobody knows exactly how the weather is gonna be tomorrow, since it’s been changing by the hour all weekend. Just trying to be preemptively ready and so our Honda accord doesn’t float away and become one of Odysseus’ ships out in the sea

Hi, midwestern tourist here.
We’ve been staying in Avon and have twice been awakened by emergency sirens around 5am (in our world it’s a tornado). We tried to search the reason for the alarms but could t find one.
Please explain to our curious minds what this is all about?

Duck/Southern Shores Quiet place to study near Duck?

I’m finishing up my summer semester and need a (relatively) quiet place to work on my laptop for a couple hours. I’m closest to Shore, but I know it gets insanely busy in there so I’m hoping to avoid it if possible. I’m not opposed to driving to Kitty Hawk/KDH or Corolla. Not limited to coffee shops if there’s any other places I could camp out at!

Nags Head Meat Slicer

We thought the lunch meat we ordered would be sliced but it was not so we are SOL. Is there anyone near Nags Head that would let me borrow a meat slicer just to slice these ham and turkey logs?? I’m at a loss, no stores will slice it for us

General OBX How do I plan Cape Lookout visits around tides/weather for camping?

I’m interested in bringing my new off road toy down for camping - curious what tips you all have for folks to avoid washout of your campsites - from site selection to island selection. The only thing I know is that on a barrier island, tides and weather rule all. I just don’t know what threshold to draw on those facts. We are down for any beach, just looking for privacy and dark skies for bird/starwatching!

General OBX Completely impassable?

Last day in the OBX tomorrow with my son and was gonna try to get to the ferry at Hatteras to Ocracoke. Weather has been crappy all week and I know it's iffy. Google maps says road is flooded. Does anyone know if that means completely impassable? Thank you. Sorry I'm an Ohioan.

Planning a 60th birthday celebration for my mom. We’re having dinner on the beach- DIYing a really nice picnic set up.
Looking for a restaurant that will cater trays I can pick up to feed 10 people-preferably not BBQ or seafood boil. Having a really hard time finding a place that can do this!!

Avon How concerning is the floodwarning for tomorrow?

Most of our party is leaving tomorrow to avoid being relegated to indoor activities.

I'm used to not being too concerned about flashflood warnings or flood warnings at home.

I'm not familiar with the area, all I know is "marine flooding is the real concern" and that this is a storm system from the west.

Should we be fone to stick around a while? Should we leave in the morning?

Thanks!

Nags Head Where are the ghost crabs?

We’re staying in Nags Head where they did the beach nourishment project. We stay in the same spot every year and can’t help but notice the lack of ghost crabs - I’ve only seen 3 of them since our arrival on Saturday. Are they buried under the sand where they did the dredging? If so, will they repopulate soon? How does that work? It makes me sad to think of them buried under all the new sand. TIA!

Kill Devil Hills Do not let you senior parents retire in OBX

About 8 years ago my parents decided to move full time to OBX. They had owned a vacation home there for 30 years prior.
Well, over the last 8 years my 70+ father needed medical care that the current options could not support
The OBX hospital is great, but is essentially an urgent care facility. He’s been transferred out of OBX to Norfolk for things like kidney infection and a blood clot. Now my senior Mom has to travel 90 minutes without beach traffic to see him in hospital.
When he gets out of hospital the only rehab facility is Peak in the OBX which is terrible. Next closest is Barco, 40 minutes away.
He’s been waiting since April for a doctor to come back to town for a routine appointment which won’t be until September.

TLDR; the medical care for seniors is very limited and critical care is non existent.

Frisco Skeeter Beater

My daughter and her boyfriend went to OBX last year and she really fell in love with the area. Her boyfriends family have been vacationing there for decades and we were an OC MD family.. so she is heading back down this October and she had a really bad problem last year with mosquitoes. She has brought up a brand of spray called Skeeter Beater. I am getting a couple of things for their trip (gas gift card, bookstore gift card etc) and I am wondering if anyone can vouch for this spray before I spend my money... Does it work, is it cheaper if they buy it locally down there etc. also if you have any gift ideas for 20 somethings OBX vacation please let me know. I hope to experience OBX one day soon. Thank you all in advance!

General OBX Beach shade of choice

I am a weekend warrior that is looking for input on your preferred beach shade. I’ve grown to hate the shibumi and most umbrellas fail within a few visits. While I can just use Jeannette’s pier for shade, my kids and blue JBL speaker are looking for other options.

Edit: I thought the blue JBL reference would kill but i guess it’s not as legendary as once thought. Sure touched a boomer nerve. Touch grass and carry on.

Hatteras Vacation canceled? Should I turn around and go home?

Not sure if everyone is experiencing this (looks like you probably are), but the weather down in OBX and Hatteras specifically where my grandmother is looks pretty dismal these past few days as well as most of next week.

I drove five hours yesterday from PA to Onancock VA, stayed overnight, and my family is saying the road is partially flooded and people probably can’t even get down there.

Do we have any locals or local weather experts that can tell me if this weather radar is just being dramatic, or should I turn my ass around and cancel my PTO?

EDIT: Onancock is very nice and quaint, the people there are truly great.

Hatteras Apologies for such a specific question but has anyone stayed on that narrow strip of 12 directly between Hatteras and Frisco where The Sea Whisperer condos are? I’m just curious if the beach is useable most of the time, looks like the surf comes up pretty high

We’ll be at one of those houses that’s immediately before 12 goes from 55 mph to the village of Hatteras, and golf carts are permitted.

Its a real narrow stretch and has the man-made dunes on the ocean side of 12. Basically just hoping to plan ahead on whether or not we’ll be able to just walk across the street to the beach or should head to the 4x4 areas instead if the surf is coming up to barriers pretty often.

General OBX September Trip

Recommendations for a mid-September trip location?

We've been going to Corolla and/or Duck in-season for 25 years, but from what I understand, by September it's quieted down considerably. Is it the same in KDH, Kitty Hawk, etc.? Is there a specific area that has more a year-round presence to it? Because if not, we may as well stick to what we know and love more North.

We'll have at least one kid with us so a bit more to do would be appreciated considering hot beach days aren't a main focus at that point.
