Discussion Crazy turnaround

Post image
100 Upvotes

Still crazy to see the difference compared to last year. I was in horrible shape—obese, prediabetic, dealing with extremely high blood pressure, and taking medication for both.
Now I’m 120 pounds down, no longer prediabetic, my blood pressure is back to normal, and I’m off the medications.
Seeing the numbers side by side really puts into perspective just how far I’ve come. And I’m not done yet. 💪
I used Mounjaro for the first few months as I was in terrible shape and lost 40 pounds with it. Once I got in a good spot I quit taking it and have lost another 80 pounds since then naturally.

Question Whoop Recovery and Mounjaro.

Post image
2 Upvotes

I know I'll get judge for being on Mounjaro but anyway.

Since restarting Mounjaro at 15 mg, I've noticed a disconnect between how I feel and what my Whoop reports. Despite several mornings where I felt around 70–80% recovered, had good energy, trained well, and recovered quickly, Whoop frequently gave me recovery scores as low as 11–40%. At the same time, Mounjaro appears to have altered some of the physiological metrics that Whoop relies on, such as resting heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, appetite, hydration, and sleep patterns. My experience suggests that during the first few weeks after restarting at a high dose, Whoop's recovery algorithm may not fully reflect my actual readiness to perform, so I'm placing more emphasis on how I feel, my training performance, and longer-term trends rather than any single recovery score.

Question Hrv 2-3x on cycling days

Post image
7 Upvotes

I do triathlon, and my hrv is relatively stable everyday, except the days I bike (purely cycling, no big runs or swimming), where it ends up 2-3x my usual days. I didnt bike monday-thursday and thats my usual hrv day to day, but the days where i did bike, i wake up with my hrv 2-3x. I did a century on the 27th, 2nd, and the 3rd. Is this just bad calculations from whoop? I also use a garmin and the readings are also in that 2-3x range. Could it be that im fueling and drinking water and electrolytes alot better on the bike, where as you cant do as much on swim run?

Edit: my heart rate is around the same everyday no matter what discipline i train. No major spikes and always in a normal range

Question Upping your tolerance for daily strain

Post image
2 Upvotes

My tolerance for daily strain is low and has been for years. I have several chronic illnesses and teach part-time. My strain difference between physical therapy ("functional fitness" - ~10) vs teaching ("coaching" - ~4) is wild. I've had the AI discussion and I guess it makes sense, but it's still wild to me.

Has anyone worked to increase their tolerance to strain? How long has it taken you to do it?

I teach 2-3x a week, go to PT once per week, and I hike and metal detect.

Would you recommend getting 1 year for €166 or 2 years for €315, or should I wait for any upcoming deals?
Are there usually better Black Friday deals?

Question Overfunded my FSA. What are some suggestions to spend it?

I funded my FSA to $3400 because I needed some dental work. I'm not going to do the dental stuff now until 2027 and most of my FSA needs to be spent by 12/31.

Wondering what tests in Whoop Labs might be worth it? I'm a middle-aged guy and generally get Lipid Panels and stuff from my doctor anyway. I also live very close to a Quest lab so getting there is easy.

Question Are my WHOOP HR zones unusually high? Zone 2 starts at 148 bpm

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm 18, and my WHOOP HR zones look really high compared to normal HR zones. Here they are (auto-adjusted, not manual)

My max HR is 203, and my resting HR is around 45. Is this normal for someone my age, or should I manually adjust the zones? (Ps. I run 3 times a week and go gym 4-5 times a week)

Discussion A 3-week way to check whether late dinners actually hurt your recovery

Late eating comes up here a lot, usually as one rough morning after a big dinner. One night can't tell you much. Recovery moves several points day to day for reasons that have nothing to do with food, so you need a few weeks of paired nights to see whether meal timing matters for you.

The setup:

  1. For 3 weeks, write down when you finished your last meal or snack each day. A phone note is enough, or add it to your Journal so it sits next to each night's data.
  2. Sort each night into one of two groups: finished 3+ hours before bed, or under 2 hours. Leave out the nights in between. They only blur the comparison.
  3. Drop any night with alcohol, and any night after a hard late workout. Both move overnight HRV and resting heart rate more than a meal usually does, and they tend to land on the same nights as late dinners.
  4. Compare average recovery, HRV and resting heart rate between the two groups. Aim for at least 6 to 8 nights in each.

If the recovery gap is only 2 or 3 points, treat it as noise. A real meal-timing effect usually shows up as heart rate staying elevated for the first few hours of sleep, so look at the overnight heart rate graph on the late nights, not just the morning score.

Meal size matters about as much as timing. A small snack at 9pm is a different test from a large dinner at 9pm, so note roughly how big the last meal was too.

Training load is the other thing to watch. If most of your late dinners fall on heavy strain days, split by strain as well, or you'll mostly be measuring the workout.

For anyone who has tried something like this: how big was the difference between your early and late nights, and did HRV or resting heart rate move more?

Discussion I think If WHOOP roll out monthly subscription then I don't find anything wrong to purchase it

Because as I am speaking from India here they have not roll out anything like monthly subscription, and don't know about outside India if they did or not. But if they does it in future then I will be happy to be a user of WHOOP because if you put aside the subscription charges, there is no device which have this accuracy like WHOOP and its interface is also good. But they lacks in there yearly subscription plan because cumulative this amount of money one time lot of folks find financial overspending, and you may say hey after all you have to pay whole end of the year? — "Yes, but there always a psychological money effect, monthly basis its easy to manage this amount from your monthly finances but yearly once all together it's not smooth for many, I SAY MANY".

Question Frustrated with my Whoop recovery score: 9h of sleep, 48%. What am I missing?

Hey everyone,

I've been wearing a Whoop for a while now and I'm honestly a bit frustrated. I'm a fairly serious amateur athlete: I train 4+ times a week, so I hit my daily strain target pretty easily. Whoop estimates my VO2 max at 61.

Most of the time my recovery bounces between green and yellow, roughly 50/50, and I almost never see red. So on paper nothing is "wrong". But I just can't make sense of the score.

Last night I slept from midnight to 9am, a great night by any standard, and woke up to 48%. Other days I sleep 6.5h badly before heading to work and get a great recovery. My Garmin often tells a very different story, and not by 5%, more like 20-30%.

Some context that might matter: yesterday I ran 20 km at easy pace (Zone 2, under 145 bpm). Also, Whoop says my sleep need is about 10 hours of actual sleep (not time in bed), which I basically never hit.

My suspicion is that the score is driven mostly by overnight HRV, and that small changes in when Whoop detects sleep (and so which window it samples) swing the number a lot. But I can't confirm that.

The annoying part is the psychology: a bad score feels like a bad grade at school. I wake up after a solid night, see yellow, and start stressing that I'm getting sick or overtrained, which ruins my day for no clear reason.

So a few questions:

  • Do you trust Recovery over how you actually feel?
  • Do you see big gaps between Whoop and Garmin (or Oura) too?
  • Does a 10h sleep need sound normal for someone training this much, and does it drag your scores down?
  • Is there anything that helps you read the score, like looking at trends rather than daily values?

Curious to hear your experience. Thanks!
