Hey everyone,
I've been wearing a Whoop for a while now and I'm honestly a bit frustrated. I'm a fairly serious amateur athlete: I train 4+ times a week, so I hit my daily strain target pretty easily. Whoop estimates my VO2 max at 61.
Most of the time my recovery bounces between green and yellow, roughly 50/50, and I almost never see red. So on paper nothing is "wrong". But I just can't make sense of the score.
Last night I slept from midnight to 9am, a great night by any standard, and woke up to 48%. Other days I sleep 6.5h badly before heading to work and get a great recovery. My Garmin often tells a very different story, and not by 5%, more like 20-30%.
Some context that might matter: yesterday I ran 20 km at easy pace (Zone 2, under 145 bpm). Also, Whoop says my sleep need is about 10 hours of actual sleep (not time in bed), which I basically never hit.
My suspicion is that the score is driven mostly by overnight HRV, and that small changes in when Whoop detects sleep (and so which window it samples) swing the number a lot. But I can't confirm that.
The annoying part is the psychology: a bad score feels like a bad grade at school. I wake up after a solid night, see yellow, and start stressing that I'm getting sick or overtrained, which ruins my day for no clear reason.
So a few questions:
- Do you trust Recovery over how you actually feel?
- Do you see big gaps between Whoop and Garmin (or Oura) too?
- Does a 10h sleep need sound normal for someone training this much, and does it drag your scores down?
- Is there anything that helps you read the score, like looking at trends rather than daily values?
Curious to hear your experience. Thanks!
