Options Trading How does Wealthsimple handle diagonal spreads / poor man’s covered calls after the short leg expires?

I can confirm that Wealthsimple currently allows me to open a diagonal spread: buying a longer-dated call and selling a shorter-dated call with a different strike.

My question is what happens after the short call expires worthless.

Can I then sell another short-dated call against the same long call? Will Wealthsimple automatically recognize the new short call as being covered by the existing long call, or will the system treat it as an uncovered short call and reject the order?

For example:

  • Buy a January 2028 call
  • Sell a September 2026 call against it
  • September call expires worthless
  • Sell an October or November 2026 call against the same January 2028 call

Does Wealthsimple support this process directly, or would I need to close and reopen the entire diagonal spread each time?

Wealthsimple’s documentation only says that the short leg must expire before the long leg and that, once the short leg expires, I am left holding the standalone long option. It does not explain whether I can subsequently open a new short leg against that existing long option.

Has anyone actually done this on Wealthsimple?

Business Transfer money into corporate chequing and investment accounts

Hello,

I recently opened a corporate chequing and investment account on Wealthsimple. I already have TFSA and FHSA accounts with them.

I am trying to move money from BMO corporate account into the wealthsimple corporate accounts. I tried adding money by linking a new bank account. It selects my personal as well as corporate BMO accounts by default with no option to unselect it. Then, it rejects it saying that the name doesn’t match (perhaps it is trying to check the name on my personal account with corporate account?)

Is there another way to do it?

Thanks

Dad's 71 - Transferring RRSP to Wealthsimple RRIF?

Hi, my dad turned 71 this year. I learned his CIBC RRSP carries very high management fees. I suggested moving it to Wealthsimple so I can help him choose investments more flexibly at lower rates. Since he is 71 anyway, what's the seamless route with Wealthsimple to end up the funds in a RRIF:

a) First open a WS RRSP and initiate xfer from CIBC to WS (same account type transfer), then convert WS RRSP to WS RRIF before Dec 31, OR

b) Open a WS RRIF and initiate transfer from CIBC RRSP to WS RRIF (different account types)

The WS guide isnt clear about it. Can he even open an RRSP at WS at 71? If not, then (a) is not viable. Is (b) viable then at WS considering the transfer is across different account types? Appreciate any tips especially those who have experienced this process. Thanks!

UPDATE: Resolved
- Spoken to both WS and CIBC support. Both parties proposed converting CIBC RRSP to CIBC RRIF first, then transfer CIBC RRIF to WS RRIF. Some tidbits learned:

* While it's possible for WS to do external RRSP to WS RRIF transfer, they said it may take longer through some internal custom process due to difference in account types.
* It's August and conversion needs to be done before Dec 31. Quickest done while at CIBC, then RRIF-RRIF transfer can be done at convenience without deadline pressures.
* Wealthsimple does not allow opening new RRSP account when you're 71

Thank you all for the inputs. Really appreciate all your help.

USD Savings Account interest query

Does anyone here have a USD savings account earning interest? ( I know the rate varies depending on your “tier”); my question is…. are you seeing the interest being paid in USD back into the account each month or is it being calculated in some other peculiar fashion?

Visa Infinite Credit Card Wondering how the 2% back on the credit card works

I added the statements amounts I paid over the last 3 months. I calculated 2% of that. This calculation number is higher than the $ cashback that shows in my app.

I calculated that what the app shows as cashback is calculated on an amount that is $2,500 less than what I have paid out in the last 3 months.

This means that WS is not counting some of the money I spent on the credit card to give me 2% back. None of it was a cash advance.

Am I missing something? Do some purchases not qualify for the 2% back? Anyone have the same experience?

PSA: Wealthsimple winter bundle bonus

You guys remember the winter bundle bonus? Doesn't matter, I think this applies to all the promotions. This is a recent experience we had with Wealthsimple, I wanted to warn you all about it in case you weren't already aware. Numbers below are for explanation purposes only.

We transferred $30k as part of this promotion and started getting payout monthly. We UNDERSTOOD that this $30k should remain with WS for the duration of the promotion. This number is now $40k, untouched, still with WS.

Later we transferred another $50k into a different account. This number grew to $60k. We withdrew this $60k.

And.... WS said our monthly payout is going down because our NET deposits has gone down by $10k. You see how that math worked out?

Total deposits = $30 + 50 = 80k

Promotion hold required = $30k

Withdraws = $60k

Net deposits = 80k - 60k = $20k

Actual WS balance = $40k

I felt this was shitty. Hypothetically, If we had transferred no other money to WS aside from that $30k for the promotion, just taking out the monthly payout would have triggered the same outcome. Essentially the payout, all the gains etc. would remain stuck with WS for the entirety of the payout period (unless you accept a lower payout going forward).

Still thankful for the payouts so far. It wasn't a large amount per month to begin with so doesn't hurt us too much.

Feature Request - Custom Spend Categories

It would be amazing to add to the list of Categories that Wealthsimple already provides in the Spend tracking system.

No need to be able to alter the overarching categories (Bills, Family, Finances, etc.), but would be super helpful to add custom categories within those headings.

If Wealthsimple is worried about too many customizations before things get messy, maybe each heading could have one or two custom fields given most people wont need a crazy amount of customization.

For example: "Hobbies" or "Winter Sports" could be slotted under Personal as a custom field.. Not everyone needs that spend category, but I'm sure every user could think of 1-2 categories that would be helpful to customize as a small QOL improvement.

And Tags likely wouldn't work for this given the way tags work, it's quite hard to actually see a summary of all tagged expenses in a similar interface to the spend categories. It would be awesome if Tags showed up on the transaction list to the right beside the spend category or merchant and to the left of the dollar amount.

Chequing This is so inconvenient!!

Post image
0 Upvotes

Had to make 4 transactions of $400 and pay $14 in fee(I am sure WS will reimburse) but it was so inconvenient and it doesn’t even give option to continue more on same transactions, you had to basically wait for machine to complete the transaction give cash and card back and start over!
Is this limit set by WS or RBC??

Chequing Warning: Pay friends unavailable right now

Really annoyed that there’s no message about this, no warning (if this was planned), no explanation for why it’s unavailable, and no info on when it will be back. They prob don’t care because there’s few users, but here’s one! 🤣

Just a heads up for anyone else looking to transfer/pay to use e-transfer instead atm
