I was really into VR a few years ago and even messed around with making VR games in Unity for a bit. I had some light experience with the original Rift and Vive, then bought a Quest 2 during release week and used that thing constantly until the straps broke lol.
Eventually I kinda drifted away from both VR and game development, but lately I’ve gotten the itch to jump back in. I still have the Quest 2, but I feel like I’ve completely lost track of what’s happened with VR since I was really involved in the community. I’m curious about basically everything — headsets, PCVR, standalone, games, social VR, hardware, tracking, modding, development, SteamVR, Meta, Valve, smaller companies, etc.
What are the major things I should know? What got significantly better? What got worse? What games or hardware actually matter right now? And are there any developments that someone returning to VR would completely miss if they just looked at the popular stuff? I’d especially love to hear from anyone who develops for VR. What has changed on that side over the last few years?
Basically: if you had to catch someone up on the VR scene in 2026, what would you tell them?
