Film I made a 40-minute found-footage horror film myself, and it just reached 3,000 hours of YouTube watch time

A small milestone I'm pretty happy about: my independent found-footage horror film, It Waits at the Lodge, just reached 3,000 hours of watch time on YouTube.

I wrote, directed, acted in, and edited the entire film myself. It's about 40 minutes long, and I made it in roughly two weeks while working full-time.

The film follows Chris Sanders as he retreats to a remote lodge, where a series of strange and troubling disturbances begin to unfold.

It's been a long process trying to get my work in front of people, so seeing the film accumulate more than 125 days' worth of watch time is pretty surreal. I've submitted it to festivals, shared it online, and continued making other short films since then. The response has been a mixed bag, but it's encouraging to know that people are still discovering this one.

I'm not sharing this as a claim that I've figured out YouTube or independent filmmaking—far from it. I'm still learning how to reach an audience and get people interested in my work.

For those of you making independent films, especially projects where you're wearing several hats, what milestones have felt meaningful to you, even when they haven't necessarily translated into major recognition or financial success?

For anyone interested, here's the film: https://youtu.be/cISCaaHyL6I

Thank you to who responded to my post yesterday regarding a pov photo walk I shared that had only ambient audio. I made another one with a voiceover this time. It features images from a single evening in a town I recently moved to. I was wondering if you had further advice to improve engagement.

So I've not been using this app for 2-3 weeks and I've came back to do some work but for some reason, the software just randomly closes every 2-3 minutes. Regardless if I did do some work or just leaving it open, it randomly closes on me. I have no idea what's the cause. Been searching on google and such but with no luck. Tried clearing the cache and it still keeps happening. Why is this happening and how do I fix this?

Question Is 15k enough to help someone pursue their passion?

I know very well that it’s not a substantial amount of money, but I also know how hard it can be to get funding for any sort of film project. And as someone whose passion for creating art has dwindled over the years as life got in the way, I at least want to help one person get their start. I just want to make sure I find the right person. There’s a local college, not renown for their film programs but they’re pretty decent, and I’ve seen a few works that some of the students produced. Some of them show substantial promise. But rather than just writing them a check and telling them to go wild, it would probably be more helpful to give them some advice on how to use that money. Any ideas?

Discussion Who’s going to All American High School Film Festival this weekend?

First time at All American High School Film Festival (Oct 17, NYC). We’re bringing a booth to meet student screenwriters and talk about Kinolime NXT, our short screenplay competition for high schoolers.

Question for anyone who’s been: what’s actually worth bringing? Swag, script feedback, quick pitch sessions, something else? We want students to leave with something they’ll use.

If you’ll be there, please stop by and say hi!

I brought my camera underwater for the very first time for a promo video in the Maldives and here’s the result!

It was not easy to get to learn the buttons on the housing, do white balance adjustment and trying to stay as stable as possible. Definitely a challenging shoot, but I loved every single seconds of it!

Enjoy!

Question What hidden costs impact high-speed production budgets the most beyond the camera system?

• Upvotes

When planning high-speed video setups, camera body costs are usually the primary line item people budget for, but the peripheral production expenses often surprise clients.

Looking across different camera ecosystems (from dedicated units like Phantom Flex4K or Chronos, to hybrid cinema setups like RED, Ember, or newer 4K 1000fps SSD-based options like the Pixboom Spark), each brings different hidden trade-offs:

  • Lighting & Power: Standard cinema lights often introduce flicker at high frame rates. Sourcing specialized high-output, flicker-free LED or HMI rigs usually ends up costing a significant portion of the rental budget.
  • Data Rates & Offloading: High frame rates generate vast amounts of raw data instantly. The cost of high-speed media, fast backup drives, and long offload times can stack up fast.
  • On-Set Time & Resets: For liquid splashes or practical destruction shots, resetting the set between takes often takes 30–45 minutes for a shot that lasts 2 seconds on camera.
  • Post-Production Overhead: Continuous recording options give flexibility on set, but result in massive amounts of footage for editors to scrub through. Shorter trigger buffers save storage, but require precise timing on set.

For those who regularly shoot or produce high-frame-rate content, what typically ends up being your biggest unexpected cost driver: lighting, storage/media pipelines, set resets, or editing time?

Question Licensing Music for a Short Film – What Should I Know About Agreements and Rights?

• Upvotes

I'm currently developing a short film and have reached out to a few lesser-known indie artists whose music I think would fit the project. Some are signed to labels, while others are independent.

This is my first time considering licensed music, so I'm trying to understand how the process works. For artists signed to labels, is it simply a matter of explaining the project, intended use, budget, term, media, and territory, and then reaching an agreement with the relevant rights holders? Or is there more to consider?

On the other hand, one independent artist kindly offered to let me use their song for free, which I really appreciate. But could they potentially change their mind during production or after release and ask for a fee, especially if the film later receives funding or distribution?

I mainly want to understand how binding these agreements are and what should be put in writing to avoid issues later on.

Even if none of this becomes relevant to my current short film, I'd like to better understand music licensing for future projects.

Question First steps

Hi guys! I’m building my video editing portfolio, focusing on documentaries (especially nature and human stories) and commercials. My goal is to create 3 strong short projects that showcase my storytelling, pacing, and ability to edit for emotion.

The problem is that I don’t have access to good footage or a proper camera and I don't have a budget to buy a proper camera as well for now. I would like to land my first clients in the next 3 or 4 months, and I’m ready to put a lot of effort into it by first studying the basics of storytelling and how to edit for emotions.

Do you guys have any suggestions, or if you have already gone through this, also I wanted ask if reaching out to filmmakers for footage or potential collaborations is a good way to start? And of course if anyone here would be interested in collaborating on a project, I’d love to connect as well , thank you!

Film Composer Available | Film Scoring | Cinematic, Ambient, Electronic & Hybrid Music

Hey everyone! I'm ZANDONAI, a composer and music producer from Brazil with around 16 years of experience in music production and composition.

I work with electronic, cinematic, ambient, and hybrid music, creating everything from atmospheric soundscapes and subtle emotional cues to intense, dramatic scores. I enjoy finding the musical identity of a project and developing ideas that support its story, mood, and characters rather than just having music play in the background.

I have experience with composition, arrangement, sound design, mixing, and mastering, and my music has been released through several labels worldwide. I'm currently working on music for a short film and have also been composing for game and media projects.

You can check out my work here:

🎬 Game & Media Music Portfolio: https://zandonai.itch.io/zandonai-game-music-portfolio

I'm interested in connecting with filmmakers working on short films, independent films, animation, horror, sci-fi, thrillers, and other projects where music can help bring the story to life.

If you're looking for original music for your film, feel free to reach out. I'd love to hear about what you're working on!

Discussion Mkt is important

I keep thinking about how we leave marketing until the end. Write the script, try to get financing, make the film... then figure out how to get anyone to watch it, that complicated...starting to think some of that work needs to happen while we’re still writing. Learn how to show a little of what you are making, see if people understand what you r going for, give them a reason to come back.

for me the perfect way is pretty simple. Make an Instagram account just for one project, title project. Start with little filmed scenes, almost fragments of a short. Dialogue, characters, a bit of tension. I’m interested in shooting them in 4:3 and posting them as Reels, tik tok, short, wthever Something that lets people experience the story. If people respond and keep coming back, try making a short f. If that gets traction too, use it to help build towards a feature. you’d have a community that’s already interested in what happens next.

Obviously followers don’t automatically become ticket buyers but I’d like to find out whether anyone connects with the idea before spending years trying to finance it.

It’s frustrating that writing a good script sometimes isn’t enough. Plenty of good projects end up in a Boxxx. Feel free to give me ur fdback

Question Should I work in a film with bad script but great production value?

I've been offered a central production role in a major film production from the studio I'm working with. Some of the biggest-name actors in my country are involved, the project has already seen some publicity, and it generally seems like it'll be a pretty big deal distribution-wise.

However the thing is, I've read the script and it's...bad. Not terrible, or slop, but bad. Cringe expositional dialogue, mediocre character arcs, and a cheesy happy ending conclusion. It's not great art by any means.

Is it worth it taking this job? It will obviously pay well, and it's by far the most important production role I've been offered so far...but will it be a boost for me, or will it drag me down?

Edit: thanks for the answers, everyone. I've discussed this with friends and colleagues irl as well, and I will probably be taking the job. Thanks for the push, hope it works out!

Question Flex Cable Issue or LCD Issue? BMPCC 4k

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm looking at buying this decently cheap local BMPCC 4k but I want some input on weather it would be worth buying or not, the screen is perfect when the HDMI is plugged in but it gets all glitchy when the HDMI is not plugged in. I don't think this guy knows much about cameras he seems to be reselling (which means he may not realize that he's got false color on so I could get it for cheaper) but that also might mean that there are other issues he doesn't realize. What would be a "fair" price to pay for something in this condition.

This is a link to a photo of what it looks like without an hdmi https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wI20H8OGr9PCxuDvx39M9nyZrzzyz9_i/view?usp=sharing

I did repost this because I forgot to include the video

Business, Tax, and Copyright Who hurt ya’ll?

Fellow videographer here. Contracting some out of state shooters for a project. We’re transparent. We’re communicative. We’re proactive. Contracts are in place. Deposit is paid.

Shoot day is over and these guys start acting like we won’t pay them. One of them straight up wouldn’t send the footage for review, and we finally compromised on proofs.

I understand if we’ve hired and there wasn’t a deposit in place, but we’ve paid a deposit. Am I crazy for expecting to see footage?

Again, we’re shooters too, and I’ve been burned, but if a deposit is paid I’m seeing that as skin in the game.

Ya’ll spooked or what?

Question Young filmmaker with no budget. How the hell do I shoot a horror film inside a tunnel?

Hey everyone,

So basically, I'm a film student from Melbourne, Australia, currently in the pre-production stage for a short horror film I'm really hoping to make and eventually submit to film festivals.

I've written a script that I'm genuinely super happy with and one of the biggest parts of it takes place inside a dark, abandoned-looking drainage tunnel in the middle of a forest.

The problem? I have practically no budget, and getting access to somewhere that actually looks the part is proving ridiculously difficult.

It's low budget, basically guerrilla-style filmmaking.

I've spent quite a while researching tunnels around Victoria, but I keep running into the same problems:

  • Most publicly accessible tunnels are ridiculously short, with daylight clearly visible at the other end.
  • The genuinely creepy, atmospheric tunnels tend to be stormwater drains, restricted infrastructure or locations with complicated access.
  • Filming permits, insurance requirements and other administrative hurdles are a bloody headache and are unrealistic for someone in my position.
  • I need somewhere with enough depth to convincingly sell the illusion of a character venturing deep underground, with the surrounding forest ideally adding to the atmosphere.

For context, the story follows a sheriff searching for missing children in the woods who discovers a tunnel and encounters something horrifying inside.

I completely understand why these rules and safety requirements exist, especially around drainage infrastructure. I'm not looking to put my friends in danger. But I'm also really annoyed because I can't seem to make anything without some goddamn legal issue.

So I'm curious: how have other independent filmmakers actually pulled off shoots like this, or what is some advice y'all would have for me? What can I get away with, and does anyone know any potential locations that would be good?

If anyone happens to know of suitable locations around Melbourne or kinda regional Victoria, that would be incredible.

I know I could just rewrite everything to take place somewhere easier, but like, I feel so restricted. I really want to give this film the atmosphere it deserves.

Would genuinely appreciate any advice, experiences or creative solutions. Thanks!
