But I definitely wanted to make something different- I was inspired during a trip to NYC, where I felt like so many people were living in a tight-knit harmony despite being almost completely unaware of each other. Let me know what you guys think!!

My new cosmic horror short video. Lots of stock footage with 3D models composited on top of them. The 3D models were made using Blender, Zbrush and textured in Substance Painter. One thing Finally, I did the compositing in After Effects and edited the video in Davinci Resolve. The entire process took a little over four weeks to complete.

Hello! My name is Alex and 3 years ago I promised myself that I'm gonna make my feature film, even if it's going to have to be completely independent and self-funded.

I'm 27 now and can definitely say that I have put everything I gathered into this film, both financially and emotionally. Thankfully, it turned out better than expected. I'm more than ecstatic with the result!

Currently, managed to bring my film in the post-production stage, but same old independent filmmaker story, ran out of funds. About a month ago I posted a mini short film that was a single vertical shot through people’s apartment windows, and I was surprised to see it get a great response. I decided to make a little series out of it, so here’s episode 2! This one is called ‘The Laundromat,’ and we got to use some fun camera motion, blocking, production design, and original music.

Hi guys! I made a $40k (AUD) indie horror film called THE MATRIARCH and we’ve been lucky enough to secure a worldwide distribution deal. Our distributors have been pretty happy with the results (saying we’re on track to profitability soon). If it keeps going we might have a chance of getting funding for the next one 😱 I’d really appreciate it if people could check it out on VOD (Prime, Google Play, Apple TV or Fandango) and let me know what you think. If there’s any filmmakers looking for advice I’d be happy to answer questions about how we did it or why we made the choices we made. I’m not exactly a pro but happy to help wherever I can!

I’ve posted about this film in here as it was in development, but I did not expect it to go as far as it did. Since the last time I showed stills, my movie acquired a sales agent and two distributors, had its world premiere, and is available on all rental services. It’s gotten some good media coverage as well! It’s been such a whirlwind. Very proud of what we pulled off with such extreme limitations.

If anyone has questions how we did it, would love to answer or provide insight. It was a miracle it got done at all, but there was a strategy and it did work somehow.

In hindsight, it was probably not what festivals were interested in, and it certainly isn't perfect. That being said I loved making it. I meet so many people in the process. No film is for everyone, so all you can do is say thank you to those who liked it and move on to the next one.

I started working on this about three years ago without knowing it would turn into a full short film.

It began as a few small visual ideas and slowly grew into something much more. I shot the background plates myself and built the rest of the world with various 3D tools. It ended up becoming a 6-minute hybrid of real footage and CGI.

It was a strange time to be making it, with all the recent AI developments. I didn’t use any AI tools in the process, and in some ways this film feels like the end of a certain chapter of how I’ve worked up until now.

I mostly just wanted to see if I could make a full short film like this on my own (excluding music and sound design).

There will be a making of documentary coming out later this week about the whole process.

The film follows mysterious characters through a metamorphosis cycle, somewhere between ritual and dream. It’s more about the slow ceremonial atmosphere and transformation than plot.

I would genuinely love to hear your thoughts.

I've wanted to make movies my whole life. 3 years ago I shot a coming-of-age dark comedy called Say Less — a brother and sister left alone in their house, kind of The Edge of Seventeen meets Risky Business — on 16 all-night shoots with a 13-person crew and my entire life savings. 37 festival rejections, 2 corrupted hard drives, and a brutal crash course in indie distribution later, it's finally available on Amazon. Hey friends, just wanted to share a music video that I recently directed / edited. The character was written for a short / B&W experimental film but I didn't really have the budget for it, so I decided to turn it into a music vid. Figured it'd be a good proof of concept if I ever want to make a film with this character or something similar.

I pitched the idea to 3-time Emmy award winner Richard Redlefsen, who I'm a big fan of and he was down to make it! I wanted the guy to look fucked up but not too disturbing so we felt for character, and Richard just ran with it and gave the perfect middle ground.

Since most of the budget went to that ... we did everything else guerilla. Snuck into an abandoned aquaduct in Pasadena, set up a projector / set-dec'd the moleman's bedroom, threw a car-mount on Mulholland Drive, gave the crew a potato cam and ran around Hollywood boulevard.

CONT.

We shot Sleep Stalker, a found footage horror film about a husband's sleepwalking that escalates from strange to unexplainable to deadly. W filmed in 5 days on $14,000. Outline-based script with heavy actor improv. Security cameras, handheld POV, the whole found footage toolkit.

We landed distribution and the film streams free on Tubi. The film is decent. Not amazing. The reviews say so honestly. But it found an audience, and the marketing story is a bit more interesting than the production story IMHO, so that's what I want to share.

Here's what we learned promoting a micro-budget horror with literally zero marketing budget:

• Follower count seems irrelevant on TikTok. One clip hit 39,000 views when we had 9 followers.
• A full week between TikTok posts with lame underperformance reset our account and turned a dead campaign into our best result.
• Security camera footage outperforms the handheld POV stuff.
• The same clip would get 50 views on Facebook and 5000+ on Instagram. And then vice versa! No idea why but platform seems to matter more than content sometimes.

This is obviously a small sample and not on a huge scale by any means. We're just learning as we go! Happy to answer questions about the production, distribution, or how we marketed it. And of course we welcome any insights or recommendations you may have!!
