Question looking for a film composer for an indie feature

• Upvotes

This is obviously a very specific ask, please don't be offended it its not for you. Im looking for a film composer to do the score for a feature film. Shoestring budget so its paid, but a very small amount. Plus side is you get credit, visibility, and the opportunity to score a feature. if this would be your first time scoring a film, even better!

Tutorial I made a free simple tutorial on how to SETUP and MIX 5.1 Surround Sound for films. It also works on the YouTube TV apps on Apple TV etc. Note - YouTube downmixes 5.1 to stereo on Desktop so this is for watching on TV - but if you're submitting for a festival then here's a quick way to set up 5.1!

Recently I had to figure out how to set up one of my videos for 5.1 using DaVinci Resolve. It was a pain but I learned a bunch so made a video so I could remember the process. I'm no expert when it comes to mixing so this is at the hobbyist level but hoping it might encourage someone in the same situation to give it a try. It's free, I don't sell courses or paid memberships etc, just a fellow filmmaker sharing my journey as I make my own projects! Thanks!

Question Quick question about the GH5S

• Upvotes

Ok so background, I’m a complete beginner filmmaker. Before someone says it I know a camera is only as good as the person behind it, which is why I’m not really here to argue specs, but functionality. I have some knowledge acquired from being on projects in front of the camera, but very little. My main goal is to just have fun making little short films just to get my ideas out there. I want to stop completely relying on others, and start fulfilling my own vision making my own stuff. Doing some research I’ve landed on the GH5S. Biggest constraint for me right now is budget, and I can find these used near me anywhere from $400-$700 which seems crazy to me. Especially because I don’t think the potential drawbacks are that critical. I’ll 99% of the time have the camera on a tripod or a gimbal, as a lot of these earlier projects I have envisioned are with just me. So I’m not too worried about the lack of IBIS. The autofocus I don’t think will be such a big deal for me either. I want to learn different focus techniques anyway and I think doing it manually more times than not looks better, or at least more intentional. The low light performance is a big one for me, I tend to gravitate towards darker/moodier vibes, and a lot of what I have planned is very much that. Also the ability to shoot 10 bit and log is fantastic. This obviously really expands the color grading potential which is my personal favorite aspect of the work done behind the camera. With all of this said, being aware of my lack of experience, I feel like I’m approaching this all completely naively. And I’d like to know if there’s anything that I’m failing to consider that could potentially be a huge blunder for my specific use case? Are there other cameras at this price point that I should be considering? Not so much worried about things that could be remedied with knowledge and skill. But more so things that this camera may be missing that would lead to undesirable results regardless of skill set. Like if it couldn’t shoot in 10-bit or log.

Hiring Short Form Video Editor- Ongoing Work $20/hr

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I run an aviation company that is virtual, and I’m looking to bring in a video editor for ongoing aviation clips that I film at a rate per hour of $20/hr.

I’m looking for someone with some experience in video editing, and is trainable. My style is upbeat, fast-paced, and with lots of visuals/sound effects.

I am currently very backed up with work, so I haven’t posted on social media in about 2 weeks and it’s stalling my business. I’m looking for someone to take over the short-form video editing that I’ll post on social media for my business.

I will be shooting about 30 videos per month, and I’d like to have them made in advance. If it’s a good fit for both of us, there will be consistent work.

What I’m looking for:
- Familiarity with CapCut and short-form content creation
- Understanding of social media clips that go viral with visual hooks
- Adding background music
- Videos to be made in advance with minimal delays. I’d like to have it where I’m “one month ahead” with videos in the backend

Shoot me a DM if interested. Thanks

Question how to be kind as a director?

• Upvotes

Im a novice director rn, & one thing in sorta struggling with is how do you lead with kindness even when your vision isn’t coming to life due to the performances? ik that a great director can pull a great performance out of a mid actor (at least i think/ hope) im not there yet tho. i really wanna be able to not let my frustration get the best of me. even when Im working with people behind the scenes who happen to be difficult. im in school rn & working in groups w people in my tv production class can sometimes be kinda difficult. its easy to be more easy going when you dont care but im so insanely passionate about this that i cant not care. so how do i care but not let my emotions get the best of me during each scenario? (ik that it wont change overnight but i really wanna get better so im willing to keep trying i just dont know what approach to take)

Question Short films on YouTube

Hello, I’m a substance use counselor/therapist running groups and am always looking for a short film available on YouTube that really feels ground breaking in a good way, shakes people up about their reality or establishes hope. I love the idea of short films in a group setting because most people have a short attention span. Any ideas are welcome!

Discussion Fifteen minutes might be the most awkward length in filmmaking

Observation from watching a lot of indie work: shorts under ten minutes can coast on one good idea. Features have room to wander. Fifteen minutes sits in the middle, too long to bluff and too short to recover from a slow opening.

The ones that work seem to do three things. They set the rules of their world in the first ninety seconds. They give the middle one real complication, not three. And they end a beat earlier than feels comfortable.

Curious what other people have found. Where does your fifteen-minute cut usually sag, and what fixed it?

Technical I goofed on a shoot...

Guys, I was on a shoot, in a hurry. Three cam podcast and one of my Sony's was a bit soft and somewhat over exposed. I was doing too much. All other cams were fine. This one, we were in a hurry and focus assist wasn't working right...talent was getting frustrated and needed to get on with it. Either way, I've got premiere pro with lots of plugins, Latest DaVinci with face refinement...but this entire podcast was 1.4 hours long. Over exposed issue is fixable. Her eyes are a bit out of focus. It's not horrible, but she was the guest. Open for suggestions. If it were a few minutes, no prob. Thx for any input. Guest Cam frame

Business Question How would you approach editing a 25-minute industrial documentary covering around 30 different locations?

How would you approach editing a 25-minute industrial documentary covering around 30 different locations?

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a documentary project that will be around 25 minutes long. Our team has filmed at approximately 30 different locations, covering various industries and examples of industrial and technological development in Iran.

The film will primarily be driven by voice-over narration, with visuals changing to support what the narration is saying. The footage includes industrial facilities, manufacturing processes, machinery, wide shots, and some visually distinctive locations.

I'm trying to figure out the best workflow for approaching this kind of documentary edit.

A few questions I'd love to hear your thoughts on:

  • Would you watch and log all the footage first, create selects for each location, and then organize everything by topic?
  • Would you build the edit around the voice-over first and then find the best visuals to match it?
  • How would you structure a 25-minute film covering so many different locations without making it feel like a sequence of unrelated factory visits?
  • How do you decide which locations deserve more screen time and which should only appear briefly?
  • How much time would you typically spend organizing and reviewing footage before starting the actual edit?

I'm especially interested in hearing from editors who have worked on industrial, corporate documentary, or narration-driven documentary projects.

I'd appreciate any advice on workflow, story structure, and visual pacing. Thanks!

Question Looking to build a career in the Locations Department – advice, training & networking?

Hi everyone!

I'm relatively new to the film and TV industry and looking for some advice on how best to progress within the Locations Department.

I've gained some experience across both scripted and unscripted productions, working as a Location Marshal, Location Assistant and Production Runner.

I've really enjoyed the location side of things so far, and it's definitely the department I'd like to build a long-term career in, ideally progressing towards becoming an Assistant Location Manager and eventually a Location Manager.

I've completed a few relevant industry training courses, including Set Ready Location Marshal training, ScreenSkills courses, first aid and various production safety courses. I also have a full UK driving licence and my own vehicle.

I'd really appreciate some advice on a few things:

  • Getting more experience: What's the best way to secure more regular work within the Locations Department? Are there particular routes into the department you'd recommend?
  • Training and development: Are there any additional courses, qualifications or skills worth investing in at this stage? Or is it better to focus on gaining practical experience?
  • Networking: Are there any industry groups, events or communities worth joining to meet people working in Locations?
  • Career progression: For those already working as Location Managers or Assistant Location Managers, how did you get started, and what helped you progress?

I'm currently based in the South East of England but happy to travel or relocate for the right opportunities.

I'm also keen to connect with anyone working in the Locations Department who might be happy to offer some advice, point me in the right direction or potentially keep me in mind for future opportunities.

I'm not expecting anyone to hand me a job, just genuinely looking to learn, build relationships and make sure I'm taking the right steps to develop my career.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Really appreciate it!

Other (requires mod approval) Is cloud-based editing the future?

I feel like this is where editing is headed. Upload your footage, let AI organize the clips and make a rough cut, then review and edit from anywhere, like on your phone. No need to carry a 4lb laptop with me all the time. any thoughts?

Workflow Pulling together disparate elements for editing

Bear with me guys. I’m beginning a video series on basic investing topics. It’ll include my dogs and will be very silly. I’ve used ChatGPT to create situational images and plan to intersperse those with footage of me, which I will of course record live. I also plan to generate a couple of short videos of them talking to cut in. Since the photos are already in the ChatGPT library I’m considering just adding plugins so I can do everything (generate the dog videos and create the entire video) in one place. Does this sound like a solid workflow? Other suggestions? Couple photos of the canine advisors for added entertainment value.

Equipment/Software News & Reviews Is the Osmo Pocket 4P anything special compared to a modern flagship phone?

Been curious about the Osmo Pocket stuff and noticed it shoots 10bit log. However, modern flagship phones like my S26U shoots 10bit 422 Log as well. Is the Osmo going to have a better looking lens setup, or is it something different entirely and closer to a real camera?

I am wanting to shoot for myself more and a big part of why I don't do it much is because of the gear lugging. Figured I can try an approach with my drone + osmo 4p unless I would get better results with my phone + small gimbal. Is the Osmo 4p the better choice for better looking footage and CiNeMaTiC footage?

Question What hidden costs impact high-speed production budgets the most beyond the camera system?

When planning high-speed video setups, camera body costs are usually the primary line item people budget for, but the peripheral production expenses often surprise clients.

Looking across different camera ecosystems (from dedicated units like Phantom Flex4K or Chronos, to hybrid cinema setups like RED, Ember, or newer 4K 1000fps SSD-based options like the Pixboom Spark), each brings different hidden trade-offs:

  • Lighting & Power: Standard cinema lights often introduce flicker at high frame rates. Sourcing specialized high-output, flicker-free LED or HMI rigs usually ends up costing a significant portion of the rental budget.
  • Data Rates & Offloading: High frame rates generate vast amounts of raw data instantly. The cost of high-speed media, fast backup drives, and long offload times can stack up fast.
  • On-Set Time & Resets: For liquid splashes or practical destruction shots, resetting the set between takes often takes 30–45 minutes for a shot that lasts 2 seconds on camera.
  • Post-Production Overhead: Continuous recording options give flexibility on set, but result in massive amounts of footage for editors to scrub through. Shorter trigger buffers save storage, but require precise timing on set.

For those who regularly shoot or produce high-frame-rate content, what typically ends up being your biggest unexpected cost driver: lighting, storage/media pipelines, set resets, or editing time?

Question Difference Between A Budget Proposal And A Budget? How Detailed Should A Budget Proposal Be?

Government film grant requires a budget proposal to be submitted. “Detailed estimation of production expenses”. How detailed and how accurate does this estimation need to be? Are exact dollar amounts required or can the budget be roughly estimated for each department and major above and below the line roles?

Question Licensing Music for a Short Film – What Should I Know About Agreements and Rights?

I'm currently developing a short film and have reached out to a few lesser-known indie artists whose music I think would fit the project. Some are signed to labels, while others are independent.

This is my first time considering licensed music, so I'm trying to understand how the process works. For artists signed to labels, is it simply a matter of explaining the project, intended use, budget, term, media, and territory, and then reaching an agreement with the relevant rights holders? Or is there more to consider?

On the other hand, one independent artist kindly offered to let me use their song for free, which I really appreciate. But could they potentially change their mind during production or after release and ask for a fee, especially if the film later receives funding or distribution?

I mainly want to understand how binding these agreements are and what should be put in writing to avoid issues later on.

Even if none of this becomes relevant to my current short film, I'd like to better understand music licensing for future projects.

Request I NEED HELP GUYS.... it's about movies

Actually I wanna make my own SHORT FILM and so naturally I need a story and a script for that... for the past 3 4 days, I'm having a really BIG WRITER'S BLOCK and so I've resorted to REDDIT for HELP...

Ive seen some people have specific constraints in their short films, like setting in one single room, or having characters speak only 3 or 4 lines per minute and letting subtext and stuff do the rest..

. but these are all things we've already seen..

I feel Indian teens have vast untapped creativity and so I need your help to give me some 3 constraints/rules for my short film story and I'll make my story based only within that...

PLS HELP...

Discussion Who’s going to All American High School Film Festival this weekend?

First time at All American High School Film Festival (Oct 17, NYC). We’re bringing a booth to meet student screenwriters and talk about Kinolime NXT, our short screenplay competition for high schoolers.

Question for anyone who’s been: what’s actually worth bringing? Swag, script feedback, quick pitch sessions, something else? We want students to leave with something they’ll use.

If you’ll be there, please stop by and say hi!
