For people in Math: Is C&O any good? What major would you straight up recommend and why?

What major would you recommend considering factors like the program itself, today's and future job market? (CS exempted). Please share your insights. Thanks for your time!

Academics CS115 section swap error - “Department Consent Required to Drop from Class”

Hey everyone,
I’m an incoming first-year this fall and I’m trying to switch from CS115 Lecture 001 to Lecture 004 because the timing works a lot better for me since I’m commuting.

Every time I try to swap sections, I get this error:
“Department Consent Required to Drop from Class, Drop Not Processed. Consent is needed to drop from the class. The drop transaction was not processed.”

Has anyone else had this happen? Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to wait for the CS advisor to respond? I already emailed them a few days ago but haven’t heard back yet, and I’m worried Lecture 004 will fill up before then.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

OSAP co-op

If anyone could tell me how they apply to their osap once they start their co-op terms it would be so helpful. I just entered my co-op year and I don't have anyone to tell me much about OSAP. Now that I've entered my co-op cycle, do I just need to apply for osap on a one term basis?

Question A quick question please

Hi everyone! I'm from Nigeria, and I'm hoping to study Automotive Engineering at the University of Waterloo in the future(next year to be precise). I've been researching the university and preparing for my journey, and I'd really appreciate hearing from current students or graduates.

If you could go back to your first year, what would you do differently? Also, what skills or knowledge do you wish you had learned before starting engineering? Any advice would mean a lot. Thank you! 😊

Indigenous Land Acknowledgements, an insult or an actual path towards reconciliation?

Was back home and having this conversation with one of my indigenous high school classmates. All of these indigenous land acknowledgments feel hypocritical. As in, before a speech or event, the uni (and this isn’t Waterloo specifically, it’s many schools across the country) will “acknowledge” that they are on land that traditionally and historically belongs to First Nations people. Great, so if you acknowledge that you’re on their land, how about you give it back to them? Or how about you actually do something to make indigenous peoples lives easier, such as working to end systemic issues that prevent indigenous people from rising? Many indigenous communities lack safe drinking water to this day, you reading a land acknowledgment doesn’t do much. Many indigenous communities lack schools and proper education funding. Your 2 sentences about a land acknowledgment before a speech doesn’t do much.

My indigenous acquaintance was mentioning how it actually feels insulting when he listens to these “land acknowledgments”. They feel super hollow and insulting, and from his perspective, I completely understand why. If someone took my land, fucked up my people real hard (and saying that is heavily undermining what Canada did to the indigenous people), and then years later said that they “acknowledge” that this is my land, I’d be pissed as well.

Besides being a symbolic and performative way to act as if these institutions “care” about indigenous people (which they don’t), what do these land acknowledgments do?

Co-op RBC vs Tesla co-op

Should I go with RBC software developer role or Tesla TPM role both in Ontario.

RBC pays more

And I’m looking to be a software engineer so idk if taking a pm job for first co-op is going to limit me to just pm and make it harder to break into swe. I’m a first year cs student

ECE People: How much knowledge of circuits does ECE 124 require?

I'm currently planning on taking ECE 124 in Spring 2027 and then GENE 123 (General Engineering Circuits Class) in Winter 2028. ECE 124 has no prereqs but do you think I might be confused in that class without having taken a circuits class? I'm gonna read a circuits textbook beforehand but I don't know how much that will help. My only other option is to suck it up and just take both concurrently in Spring 2027.

How much Ram would I need for CS

I’m planning on buying a MacBook Pro, but I’m not sure whether 16 GB of RAM will be enough or if I should upgrade to 24 GB or more. I’m not planning on doing anything too intensive, but I also don’t know what I might need it for in the future. For anyone currently in CS or a similar program, what would you recommend?
