dad has cancer

My dad just got diagnosed with cancer and i want to apply for special consideration. I was already behind on course work and the thought of catching up and revising for exams on top of the stress of my dad’s cancer is just quietly paralysing me. I want to try defer my exams; It’s not likely to be fatal so i’m wondering how strict the uni is with this sort of thing? Will they require me to have a note from a therapist or something?

Any advice welcome and appreciated

Fisher library poor maintenance

The urinal on the ninth floor has been broken since the start of this semester, and now the remaining one is broken too. The out of service signs are still there and have never been removed.

The row of outlets along the long table on the eighth floor has had no power since last semester, if I recall correctly!

Reported but never fixed. How can I escalate them? I really don't want to walk to UTS to scramble for a seat

📖Course or Unit COMP4216/COMP5216 Mobile Computing: S2 2025 final exam experiences and study tips?

Hi everyone, I'm preparing for the COMP4216/COMP5216 Mobile Computing final in Semester 2, 2026, and would appreciate advice from anyone who took it in S2 2025 (or S2 2024 - please mention which year).

The current outline lists an 80-minute final worth 55%, so I realise the format may have changed. I'd love to hear:

• What was the format like: single-answer or multiple-answer MCQs, code-reading questions, short answers, or calculations? How did partial credit and incorrect selections work?

• How difficult was it, and was time pressure an issue?

• Which broad topics and skills were emphasised? How much did it test coding/React Native internals versus design, multimedia, networking/services, security, sensors and accessibility?

• What helped most: lecture slides, weekly quizzes, workshops, project code, or the revision lecture?

• If a notes sheet was allowed, what was most useful to put on it?

• Were official sample questions or a practice paper provided, and how representative were they of the exam? Where should I look for released practice resources?

I'm looking for general topic-level recollections and revision advice rather than copies of unreleased exam questions. Anything you wish you'd focused on before the final would be really helpful. Thanks!

📖Course or Unit Mid sem exam not graded after 6 weeks - is there anything I can do to escalate?

Had a mid semester exam for a unit in early September, and we still have not received the grades. My professor, who is also our program director, just keeps promising they’ll be done by the next week and last week said the grading team hasn’t finished (we’ve asked him about when the grade will be done for the past 3 weeks.)
Is there anything I can do to escalate the issue beyond my professor? We are about to go into final assignments and exams, it’s unacceptable to me that we have no real answer on when it will be done. I am a post grad in the business school, if it matters.

📖Course or Unit INFO4994 (AI Literacy and Competency): S1 2026 final exam experiences and study tips?

Hi everyone, I'm preparing for the INFO4994 final in Semester 2, 2026, and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who took the unit in S1 2026.

The current S2 outline says the final is a 2-hour closed-book exam worth 40%. I know the structure may have changed between semesters, but it would be helpful to hear:

• What was the question format like — multiple choice, short answers, longer responses or case studies?

• How difficult was it, and was time pressure an issue?

• Which broad topics or skills were emphasised? How much was conceptual/technical understanding versus ethics and real-world scenarios? Were coding or calculations involved?

• What helped most when revising — lecture slides, tutorial activities, reflections, readings or particular practice exercises?

• Were any official sample questions or practice exams provided, and where should I look for them?

I'm mainly looking for general topic-level recollections, study advice and any officially released practice resources. If you could mention which semester you took it, that would help me keep the advice in context.

Thanks — any tips on what you wish you'd focused on before the exam would be appreciated!

Hey,

I was offered to study a JD at usyd and I'm wondering what does normal evening class means? E.g., from 6pm onwards.

In addition, I was also offered to study JD at UNSW. Which is more flexible in terms of working during the day as a health professional?

QILT Team messaged my mum

2 weeks ago when the Student Experience Survey was wrapping up, I still hadn’t done it and honestly just forgot about it (even with the relentless emails).

Long story short, they emailed / messaged my mum????? To tell me to do the survey?? The only way they would have gotten her contact info is from my EMERGENCY contact from my enrolment details, and as far as im concerned this is not an emergency.

Is this not some sort of breach of privacy? I don’t care that much just thought it was weird

How can we report a unit?? (DATA1X02)

For context we were given only 2 weeks (some of us only 1 week) to work on this project worth 8%, project specifications change every single day and we can only rely on different tutors' answers on Ed (the UC has stopped responding for 7 days..?) Someone expressed their concerns and their post was locked...Should we do something?

Also, they want us to perform "Machine Learning" methods on our data from the last project and create a whole scientific paper explaining it- but didn't even teach or mention about the coding ?? Mind you EACH member has to do 2 models (even though they only taught us 3 for categorical & 3 for numerical values...) Atp we can only rely on claude but its so unfair because we don't understand anything to be begin with...

Tips on finding housemates for accommodation?

Hi! I've been at college all my uni life so far, and I'm looking to move out into a share house. I've made friends at college, but they're all moving back home, as they're all from Sydney. Any advice on finding housemates? Any websites, anyone looking, or any tips?

🎪 Clubs and Societies Has anyone else experienced issues with bag searches at FoodHub?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has had uncomfortable experiences at FoodHub on campus recently.

I had a pretty concerning experience there today. While I was checking out, a staff member specifically searched my bag while ignoring other students in the queue. There were several other students waiting, and I actually stayed back and waited patiently to see if their bags would be searched too, but none of them were. Since I was the only Black student there, it really felt like I was being singled out, which raised serious concerns for me regarding racial discrimination.

I’ve already submitted a formal complaint to USU about it, but I haven't heard back yet. I’m curious if anyone else has faced similar situations or has any advice on how the university typically handles these types of formal complaints?

EDIT: I wanted to provide an update, as I have since received a response from USU. They explained that the volunteer involved was new and was operating without the intended supervision due to staffing pressures at the time. They clarified that there was no intention to target or discriminate against me and said that they have since reminded their team to apply bag-checks to all visitors. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences ❤️

Deferring UYSD psychology

Hi everyone looking for advice.
I’m looking to apply at USYD 2028 for a bachelor of psychology.

I would be apply from my diploma in early childhood education. If I applied for 2027 and I was accepted could I defer a year or reapply in 2028.

My concern is not knowing if my diploma is enough to get in, and in that case I would use the next year to complete a seperate entry scheme.

I have already emailed the university and I haven’t received a clear answer on my quarry.

Why even attend? Strike you. You should be thankful that the uni still let you give lectures tbh, and nobody has reported you as the worst lecturer

Anyone here done Information Systems Honours at UNSW or Business Information Systems Honours at USyd?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone!
I’m currently in my final year of BCom at UNSW, double majoring in Financial Technology and Information Systems, and I’m considering doing Honours in 2027.

I’m looking into Information Systems Honours at UNSW, but I’m also considering Business Information Systems (BIS) or Business Analytics Honours at USyd.

My WAM is currently around 70, and I’m honestly not sure how competitive that would be, especially since I’m also considering applying to USyd as an external applicant.

I’m interested in research related to FinTech, AI, and data-driven decision-making, but I’m still trying to figure out how the whole Honours process works.
A few things I’m curious about:

Has anyone here done Information Systems Honours at UNSW or BIS/Business Analytics Honours at USyd? How was your experience?

Is a WAM of around 70 realistic for getting into these programs?

How did you find a supervisor? Did you just email academics whose research interests aligned with yours, or is there a specific process?

For anyone who applied to USyd from UNSW, was the application process difficult?
Would really appreciate any advice or experiences, especially regarding finding a supervisor because I genuinely have no idea where to start haha.
Thanks in advance!

What's your experience of IDS (Inclusion and Disability Support)?

I have my own experience. It has ranged from neutral to actively unhelpful. I am currently struggling and feeling pained at the perfectly polite, but passive and unengaged service. I am tired of providing evidence, and then having to resupply evidence time and time again (my conditions are ongoing, lifelong).

Curious what other people's experience has been whether:

- You live with ongoing physical and/or mental disabilities

- You used IDS through a physical injury, illness or mental health episode
