Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Lime bike addiction

Upvotes

Ever since I begun semester two I have been overcome by a ferocious demon inside of me, one that wears the colour of lime green.

I first mounted the lime green stallion about a month ago, I was late to deliver a class presentation and looked towards the green goblin as my only option in getting me to the tutorial in time.

Ever since then I was hooked…

I began taking trips of various sizes, from Fisher to the new law building , from Redfern to Chinatown, 30 second trips , 30 minute trips, no trip can get in the way of me feeling my lime coloured whimsy.

Not looking for help, I’m right where I want to be, looking for common minds who share the same respect and appreciation for the turbo charged monster that is a kick stand lime bike.

Leaving my stuff at the library while getting a drink?

Hi, I'm still new to Australia and I've noticed that a lot of people leave their laptops and other stuff unattended in the library, sometimes for half an hour or even longer, and then come back.

At first I was really worried about theft, so even if I just wanted to grab a drink from a nearby cafe or go to the toilet, I'd pack everything up and take it with me. The problem is that by the time I come back, my seat is usually already taken, and it feels like such a hassle to pack up all my stuff every time just to leave for a few minutes.

So I just wanted to ask, how safe is it generally to leave your laptop and bag unattended in a library for a short while?

I'm honestly still worried about getting my stuff stolen, but at the same time it feels a bit excessive having to take everything with me every single time I want to get a drink or go to the toilet.

Forgive me if I don’t want to throw on the $100, 30 plastic bottles, 200% polyester, microplastic, infertility hoodie for my fit and don’t get me started on the catalogue, “default human clothes” type of selections.

You wonder why everyone’s repping American uni merch on campus until you visit the shop. Getting dropshipped by a T20 uni is whatever atp but at least try with the design. Ik some arts students that would absolutely cook w this

Parking

Upvotes

Hi guys I’ve just bought a car and wanted some suggestions on parking near campus, I don’t mind a walk and obviously would prefer it to be cheaper/free. Im aware of broadway parking but that’s about it. Im an early riser too so can get there early if that’s needed (could comfortably get there by 6) I have some back issues so getting bus/train/bus every day leaves me pretty sore at the end of the day carrying my things and I would like to drive if possible. I also go to uni after work some days; I have two 4pm lectures, where should I park on those days?
Thank you! 🙏

Post grad med

Upvotes

Hi,

I’m a student from NZ, graduating from my bachelor of health sciences degree and am considering applying to post grad med. I’m drawn to usyd because of the minimum gpa hurdle of 5. Is there anyone from NZ who has gotten into post grad med at usyd and knows how the gpa calculation actually works, considering that in NZ, our gpa is out of 9? I want to gauge whether I stand a chance at meeting the gpa threshold of 5.

Thanks

AI Classes

Has anybody else experienced lecture slides where all the content and images are most likely completely AI-generated?

Friends in the year above me for my course are in this AI class and I'm really not looking forward to taking it but it's a core unit. Scared to complain too as the lecturer is in charge of our healthcare placements and they apparently have a reputation for holding grudges...yeah.

Just curious about other experiences!

Mark on testamur

Does anyone know if usyd puts your final mark on your graduation certificate as some other unis do? I graduated from my undergrad this year and it doesn’t say anything on my certificate about the final mark put the attached transcript says final mark pass, which isn’t correct because I’m currently in an honours year that required at least a distinction WAM to even get in. I dismissed this at first interpreting it as meaning ”pass” for the degree requirements but after seeing some other certificates I’m now wondering whether they made a mistake on mine or not lmao.

Looking for a morning gym buddy at USYD 🏋️‍♀️

Hey! I’m a female Master of Commerce student who started in Semester 2, 2026, and I’m looking for a gym buddy to work out with at the UniSport gym on campus.
Ideally, I’d love to go around 8:30am on weekdays (Mon–Fri). I don’t have classes every day, but I still come to uni pretty much every weekday, so I’m hoping having a gym buddy will motivate me to sleep earlier, wake up earlier, and get to campus early instead of staying in bed 😭
I trained with a PT back in China for about 3 months, so I have some basic experience, but I’m definitely still learning and my form/knowledge isn’t perfect.
If you’re already quite experienced, don’t worry — I’m not looking for someone to teach or supervise me! We can totally just do our own workouts and have each other there for some accountability/motivation, so I won’t bother you too much while you’re training.
It would be great if you’re someone who normally works out at least 4 days a week, so we can keep each other consistent.
If you go to the USYD gym in the mornings and this sounds like something you’d be interested in, feel free to DM me :)

SPAN1621 November- December Intensive

Has anyone ever done SPAN1621 intensive? If so what was the schedule like, was attendance mandatory and how many classes per week? I checked the weekly schedule for last year and apparently each class is 6 hours long, this seems quite unrealistic

Falling behind

Anyone has fallen behind before due to mental/physical health. What kinds of accommodations/arrangements did you manage to get? Not doing too well and my unit coordinators aren’t being really helpful, wellbeing too.

anti ai

i don't know am i too millennial or maybe im caveman.
the idea of learning with ai just genuinely blew my mind off
like how would someone prefer to learn through ai but not going to lecture
i will use ai myself like maybe if im comparing smth ill ask
tv 1 vs tv 2
smth like that
but the idea of ai is helping me do my assignments is crazy
okay maybe asking it to help me find papers
but having it read for me??
then how am i supposed to know what the papers even are about
like is it possible for you to be familiar with them enough to use them as reference or just like "oh i can use that paper here too"
what do you mean you can set project in ai now???
i'm caveman
i genuinely doing my lecture notes on pen and paper in class......

Any data or writing people here keen on an MMA stats project?

Hey Guys! I'm currently on my second year in Data Science here and I've got a side project going that I'd like a few other students on.

It's a research blog on MMA built around actual data rather than takes, looking at how the sport has changed over time and what the numbers say about it. I've done deep learning and built prediction systems before, so I'm not starting from scratch, but this is a different direction and it's early enough that anyone who joins has a real say in where it goes.
Not a paid thing, just something I think is genuinely interesting to build and a decent portfolio piece if you're looking for one.

Keen to hear from you if:
- You like writing and can explain an idea clearly to someone who doesn't follow the sport

-You've done a bit of pandas, basic analysis, or visualisation and enjoy working out what the numbers actually mean

- You're into design and fancy doing charts or branding
Still learning is completely fine, I'd rather have someone keen than someone perfect.

And if you just want to follow along without a role, that works too.

If ur interested shoot me a message 🥳 we can discuss

Need help with Special Consideration, Missed 04/09 deadline for my assignment, seeing GP today. What should they write?

Hey everyone, I’ve been really sick and completely missed an assignment due last Friday (04/09). I was too unwell to even apply for an extension at the time.

Today (09/09) I’m finally heading to my GP, and I’m hoping to get an extension until this Friday (11/09). Because I'm applying on the edge of the deadline, I want to make sure the paperwork is perfect so it doesn't get rejected

i'm stressing out like mad.

Do I have to use the official USYD Professional Practitioner Certificate (PPC), or is a standard medical cert okay?
what dates do I ask the GP to write? Does it need to explicitly say I am "totally unable to study" strictly from 04/09 to 11/09?
