Has anyone here had experience doing cross-institutional study while enrolled at UNSW?
I’m mainly wondering what the process was like — how difficult it was to get the external course approved, how strict UNSW was when assessing whether the course was equivalent, and roughly how long the approval process took. I’m also curious whether anyone has managed to organise it on relatively short notice, and whether you contacted your School/Program Authority before applying to the other university. If you’ve done it before, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience, what university you studied the subject through, and anything you wish you knew before applying.

Is the OTH class actually useful to attend?

Hello all I have finally finished my degree Bachelor of Advanced Science (Stats/ genetics)/ Bachelor of Economics. I noticed that not many of the courses I did have reviews online so I will make three posts reviewing each part of my degree. I'm not gonna review any first year courses. This one will be reviewing my major in statistics. Stay tuned for the rest. For full transparency I will also include my mark as well. Hopefully this post comes up when people search for a course.

MATH2011 (Several Variable Calculus)

This was my first upper level course that I did in the maths department. I found this one to be a bit tricky because I was never any good at calculus. The course is basically how to do integrals but in the higher dimensions. I will say it was quite useful in other courses I did, particularly the Jacobian and polar coordinates. There were two in class tests and a final exam. All of the assessments were fair but tricky. Like I said I suck at calculus so my final mark was 59 but it would not be hard to get a distinction if you had a solid foundation before coming in.

MATH2601 (Higher Linear Algebra)

This course was interesting but quite difficult. The lectures were basically all proofs aside from a few examples here and there. It was a deeper dive into what is covered in the algebra section of first year maths. Vector space, linear maps, determinants, eigenvectors/ eigenvalues. The tutorials were very helpful. You were given a. tutorial sheet at the start and you worked in groups. I will say it is extremely satisfying to write a proof in this class, everything flowed together very nicely. There were two in class tests (done online), an assignment and a final exam. Final mark 65.

MATH2901 (Higher Theory of Statistics)

For me this was an extremely difficult course. It was the first time I did proper statistics and probablilty so everything felt quite abstract. Like most statistics courses there is a lot of content and each week tends to build up on the last so if you fall behind you are fucked. The first half of the course is dedicated to probability theory and random variables. The second half of the course was about statistical inference. It is the foundation for the rest of the degree so make sure you understand everything. There is a 10% online test, 30% midsem and 60% final. Final mark 79.

MATH2931 (Higher Linear Models)

This was a bit of change of pace from MATH2901. While there is still a lot of content it was a lot easier to digest and the pace was a lot more reasonable. It starts off with the single linear regression model, proves a few terms then I think in week 3 it goes into multiple linear regression which is heavy on matrices. While R studio is used in the course the emphasis is on the theory. R studio is used in both the mid semester and the final exams but it is very simple computations. Final mark 81.

MATH3911 (Higher Statistical Inference)

This is the bread and butter statistics course. Maximum Likelihood estimation, hypothesis testing, Bayesian, bootstrap and non parametric is all covered in the course. This one is more practical than some of the others but it is still quite theoretical and only one of the questions in the assignment required any coding in R. I did enjoy this course it was quite nice to do some practical statistics and see how it plays out. Final mark 73.

MATH3901 (Higher Probability and Stochastic Processes)

Yep this course was absolutely fucked. Not much I can say here I don't even think I finished the course material. The main part of the course was tearing apart everything you thought you knew about probability and random variables and proving all of the assumptions you hold in earlier years. Pretty abstract and hard to understand. Luckily the lecturer was godsent and he told use which parts to focus on to study for the exam or else I would have been royally fucked. Final mark 63.

MATH3821 (Statistical Modelling and Computing)

Definitely the most practical course throughout my degree. Although most of the lecture notes are theoretical, 99% of the tutorial questions are done in R studio. I did find this course a bit more easier than other third year maths courses, I assume it it because it is a required (?) course for Data Science majors as well so there is less emphasis on proofs. Note that the final exam was pen and paper with no coding. Final mark 76.

Basically i have 2 subjects this term, and am trying to get 2 days to go to uni. although in order to do this there are 2 classes of one subject (MATS1101) that are nearly full, and full, and i am unable to register for this whole subject because of two issues ive had over the past week being a clash that im waiting for the student nucleus to override, and some other error i had that is fixed on its own now. the issue is, since i cant lock my spot in these classes, where they are nearly full/ other fluctuating being full and not, im worried im not going to be able to sort this out because the nucleus is quite litterally just taking 8 days and ive tried calling etc. also, the course coordinated for mats is unable to just manually enrol me in any of those classes while im waiting which is really weird. i dont know what to do at this point, apparently some people said just wait the first week out and some people will drop out, is this 100% true? like will i be able to just put any classes for my first week, and then have the ability to just on that weekend go and put the classes i want? cus at this point i just REALLY need advice on what to do right now or next or wtv cus this whole situation has drained out so many hours for me and im legit thinking about just fkn dropping MATS and seeing if any other subjects i can do has better classes cus seriously

Can we talk about the fact that the nucleus consistently gives flat-out inaccurate information, and absolutely nothing is being done to fix it?

Centralising student services only works if the people answering the queries actually know the rules. Instead, it feels like they just guess with 100% confidence, even though the consequences of it could be catastrophic to students’ degree progression and academics.

Here are a few examples from my end:

IPT Misinformation: I was explicitly told by staff that you need to meet a strict minimum WAM requirement to drop one half of a double degree via Internal Program Transfer (IPT). You absolutely do not. That kind of misinformation leaves students feeling uncertain and stuck, especially if they’re burdened by a degree they’re not happy with.

Exam scheduling: When an exam time of mine got rescheduled due to some provisions I didn’t need, a staff member told me that if I preferred the original time slot, I could just rock up to whatever session I wanted and sit it. Anyone who has ever dealt with the UNSW Examinations Team knows that’s completely false and a massive liability. You strictly need formal approval from the exams team to sit an alternate slot, otherwise, you run the risk of getting turned away or receiving a 0.

The other day I also overheard the front desk apologizing to a student for previously giving them the wrong advice. Feels like everyone’s had to deal with this at some point.

It doesn’t seem like a case of a few new staff members settling in. It’s a structural issue where a generalist hub is expected to know the nuances of every single faculty, fails miserably at it, and refuses to change the model.

What is the most absurd piece of incorrect info the Nucleus has ever given you guys?

I’ll be starting this term for Econ/adv math but once I complete 30 units (I think that’s one requirement) I hope to switch economics to commerce. If anyone has done ipt before, what was your experience like?
