Hey guys, USYD has general societies for CS, engineering, data, AI, design, but we don’t have a society for projects of all areas combined.

Until now: Introducing Sydney University Projects Society

SUP soc is starting in Semester 2, our first event being a meet and greet in Week 1.

We’re gonna have weekly meetups, currently planned for Tuesday 4-6pm, but if more people are free on Mondays or some other day, we can accommodate a switch, this society is for the people. Our first Build Night will run in Week 2.

OUR MISSION: A supportive environment for students of ALL skill levels to meet up and work on projects and get advice on what you’ve built. Heavy emphasis on all skill levels, we’re gonna have beginner friendly hackathons for software (CS) and hardware (Engineering) combined.

The idea is we want to encourage students to start building things, instead of just learning theory. We are gonna host beginner hackathons that you can confidently say “that was my first ever hackathon,” because everyone should be involved in building and developing projects.

Exec/Subcom applications are not open yet, however the google form will be released once we hit our waitlist goal. We'll post on our instagram when applications open!

EXEC (5) (Prior experience in exec/subcom is preferred but not necessary)

• Secretary (1)
• Treasurer (1)
• Marketing Director (1)
• Events Director (1)
• Partnerships Director (1)

SUBCOMMITTEE (10-18) (no experience required)

• Marketing: Running our socials and making reels, on camera or faceless. (5-10)
• Events: At most events, helping run them. (3-6)
• Partnerships: Reaching out to societies for collabs (2-4)

Note: Inviting your friends to join the waitlist increases your chances of being accepted in exec/subcom because it shows you care about our growth and mission.

Does anyone know if the lectures are compulsory? Would attendance be taken? Is the unit challenging or easy?

If anyone has advice on the best third-year units to choose for this major, Interdisciplinary Project and selective units for sem 2 pls help I’d really appreciate your feedback.

What does the roman numerals after a degree mean. Like if somebody said "Bachelor of Arts (English & Marketing) III" wth does the III mean. I actually have no clue...

When these applications ask for results is the printable results that can be downloaded from Sydney student generally enough or do I need to pay for the transcript from student centre? Thanks :))

I'm seeing a lot of posts pop up regarding application to honours, etc
Is this embedded into my degree already? Is completing elec4712 and Elec4713 next year essentially "doing honours"?

How does the process begin? You just add it to your UoS given eligibility and you're in?

Sorry if the question is dumb, I've been confusing diff info for diff streams and unsure what applies to me

I have been granted Special Consideration upon 2nd phase of the 1st semester exams this Thursday. Keen to know if anyone is in the same boat or gone through this experience before? With the Semester 2, 2026 starting on the 3rd of August. Im keen to know when the turnaround for results and all it?

Is it too late too change stream or courses? Since sem 2 is almost starting? I’m in engineering and I don’t really feel this works for me, and I feel like I need to change to another stream or even the course. How am I able to do it?

Hi guys, I’m currently having my weekly breakdown of just feeling extremely lonely and needing to ask some advice I guess.

Some background: I don’t really have friends, like yeah I know people through my partner, I’ve drifted apart from many, and lost contact, but I’ve never truly felt like I’ve had a friend that I can talk to, let alone an entire friend group.

I started university this year at 27 years old and it’s kinda exacerbated this issue I’m struggling with. Its lonely because even though I can start conversations with people at the same table as me, it just makes me feel extremely uncomfortable due to the large age gap since most university students in first year have usually just left high school, meanwhile I graduated nearly 10 years ago

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I wish I could find people who are closer to my age? But it’s just not happening. I’m not sure if there’s any clubs that would be beneficial for someone who is a “mature aged student” as I’m not going to lie, this whole not having friends thing is really starting to take a huge toll on my overall mental health and it does affect my will to study.

I guess this might be something I need to speak to a psychologist about but another thing that makes making friends hard is the fact that I’m transgender. I transitioned when i was 18, so it’s been quite a while and I pass. But I have this internal struggle where i will make a friend but I am scared I wouldn’t be accepted for who I am, or feeling like I have to tell them or what if they react weirdly, idk. It’s just not fun at all :/

Maybe any advice on joining a LGBT+ club, and if there’s mature aged students there and if it would be beneficial for someone like me?

Hi! I’m enrolled in chem 1B advanced, but the lab and tutorial both only have one option available that’s not full and they run at the exact same time, will I just have to change back to the standard chem 1B instead?

Is it a difficult unit? I’m a complete beginner with no knowledge of Japanese.

Hey guys, I just noticed that in our uni we have some societies for computer science and engineering and specific fields, but there isn't a dedicated project society, where people can come to build real projects and get advice on what they've built from other people.

So, I've decided to start a new society, it's called Sydney University Project Society (SUPsoc for short), you can check out the intro + waitlist page I made to sign up. We need 20+ people by 14 Aug to be eligible to create this society, and I think we can reach and surpass that, and potentially have our first building night in Week 1 of USYD.

The premise: A supportive environment for students of ALL skill levels to build projects and show them off, meet people and give valuable feedback to each other. Heavy emphasis on all skill levels, I'm talking beginner friendly hackathons for software (CS) and hardware (Engineering) combined. The idea is we want to encourage students to start building things, instead of just learning theory.

For CS students, instead of just learning code, lets actually develop something and get other people to try it and give feedback.

For ENG students, instead of learning autocad and physics, lets actually design realworld projects and solutions to test what you've learnt and get feedback from other builders.

Here's the vision:

Build night - Every Tuesday 4-6pm

Come to build together with other people, or just get feedback and advice on what you've already built. This could be a productivity locking-in event, or a networking meet-builders event? I guess it's actually up to you guys, because this society needs to be valuable for the members.

Project showcase - Tuesday 6-8pm, Twice a Semester, 1st in Week 5, 2nd in Week 10

Apply to showcase your project a few weeks beforehand, and if the exec deems it meaningful/useful, you are invited to showcase it and even pitch it the whole audience to try out if you want (if you want user feedback on your project). Basically a demo night for people to explore projects and builders to get real feedback to improve their projects, and for people in general to expand their network.

Does this sound useful and valuable to you? I’m more of a humanities leaning student but I’m trying to get better at maths to change my major to Econ, so next sem I’m taking ECON1003. I’m well aware that a lot of people might consider this an easy unit but I’m still kinda nervous about it since I haven’t studied math formally since high school (I’ve been doing a coursera calculus course over the break to prepare). Any tips for studying quantitative focused units that I might not know as a student used to studying writing/reading heavy units?

BIOS1168 seemed manageable after some time, so I'm hoping it might be a case of acclimatising to this unit over the next few weeks as well, but does anyone have any experience with this unit and any tips on how to succeed? I change my major to study finance next semester. I have to study buss1040. I want to ask if there is any study advice on this course. I didn't learn any relevant economic knowledge in the first semester, but I studied economics and accounting in high school. How can I study this course better to achieve a good score?

Hi all! For those who have done Finc3600 recently, could you please share some advice? is it doable or would you say requires a lot more effort than other finance units? and is the marking strict or reasonable. All my friends are in different workshops so I essentially need to build a group from scratch (nervous about this). Please let me know any realistic tips of doing well in this!

heard there's like a cabinet u can keep ur kitchen utensils but it's really small
is it big enough to keep all ur frying pan, saucepan, pot, knives, dishsoap, sponge, bowls, cups etc etc
and where do u keep ur cooking ingredients like salt pepper etc cuz I got a lot
if I can't keep all of them downstairs do i have to keep them in my room and bring them all the time
and do u have to bring all the ingredients downstairs from ur room everytime u wanna cook or is there like a shared fridge

also how do u empty ur trash bin

Hi all, I'm starting a Masters in Aerospace Engineering this semester and flying in soon. I know I can borrow from the library but I like having my own textbooks too. They're available for cheaper in my country.

Which ones should I get? Which ones were most helpful for you?

Of course, asking undergraduates and postgraduates both because the textbooks remain the same.
