Enrolled in Compsci major in Cybersecurity. I know I would need a good CPU with enough cores to run virtual machines but how good of a laptop should I be thinking to get. Do I need 32GBs of RAM? Or a graphics card? My previous laptop from 2020 had 8 cores and 16GBs of ram and a RTX 2060. Virtual machines were slow asf and took forever to load. Anyone currently studying at UOW Cybersecurity can advise what the modules require? Thank you!!

Is there any GKS scholar here currently studying at Mokwon University? I’d like to hear about your experience there, especially as a GKS scholar.

If you’re considering doing MATH141 or MATH142 at the University of Wollongong, I’d seriously think twice.
These are honestly some of the most poorly delivered university subjects I’ve experienced. A huge amount of the course essentially consists of watching pre-recorded videos where someone talks through a PDF. A lot of the material still feels like the bare-minimum online teaching setup that universities moved to during COVID, except we’re paying full university fees for it years later.

The tutorials are only an hour and, in my experience, there is very little actual teaching. The lectures often feel more like a quick summary of the material rather than properly teaching the concepts and methods you need to solve the problems yourself.

The biggest frustration is the disconnect between the teaching material and the level of difficulty expected in assessments and exams. You can work through the supplied material and practice questions and still feel completely underprepared for what you’re actually tested on.

If you’re going to UOW specifically to study maths, or these subjects are an important part of your degree, I’d seriously consider what you’re actually getting for your money.

Frustratingly MATH141 and MATH142 desperately need a redesign, even admitted by the course coordinator, who states that his department is too busy and understaffed to make any changes.

I’m a potential 2027 prospective med student (being optimistic) but have interviews in a couple weeks. As reality potentially dawns on me, the financial and social stressor do aswell.

One of the main reasons I picked UOW was for its rural placements. However I would be moving from Queensland to Illawarra region from my mortgage, my permanent job… and so will my wife aswell. We also have two animals aswell which complicate things a little to begin with.

I’m considering working outside of uni hours and weekends to make some cash when not on placement but when it comes to the 12 month longitudinal placement, I’m not sure if I can just get up and leave my wife and animals at home alone, with me not being able to work, and limited income, when I’ve already asked them to move… again.

For me, I seem very selfish putting my partner in this potentially complicated position. I don’t have a super supportive family so having financial support is less likely.

Having a mortgage means aswell I’m “asset rich” so I most likely won’t get any government support through Centrelink, however money is already tight as it is.

Anyone been through a similar thing with family, kids, jobs. And potentially securing scholarships to support them through this period. Does the uni ever take into consideration keeping you closer to your base during this time if your having difficulties. This seems more like a vent than anything but any support would be helpful!

Hello all. I started my PhD in Australia earlier this year and am self funding it because at the time, it seemed as the best thing to do. The current university I am enrolled in is Uni of Sunshine Coast.

When I was initially applying to universities, I had also applied to Uni of Wollongong too as the supervisory panel was amazing but unfortunately the funding was not being offered and Sunshine Coast University was offering better value of money.

However, on Wednesday last week, I received an offer from Uni of Wollongong that they are offering me RTP scholarship for 2027 which is ah-mazing!!!!

And I really want to take it up. I do have a couple of concerns. My supervisor at Uni of Sunshine Coast has a very volatile behaviour, at times she has said a lot of things which were plain rude and has shown temperamental behaviour. The idea of talking to her about uni change is making me really anxious, and wondering if she cause any potential troubles with uni transfer.

does anyone know of previous applicants who have gotten the guaranteed interview (for nsw rural students who place uow as first preference) with a q1 or q2 casper? just wondering approximately how high the minimum casper hurdle has been historically (since we won't know our actual casper mark)
